Default TOTALLY OT! Girl things, first mammogram...

Who was it that mentioned something about digital imaging?

Turns out that our Imaging center is state of the art.

No film. :-)

And it did not hurt a bit, and it only took maybe 10 minutes tops.

Very pleasant experience in all.

Anyone in Texas that can use this facility, I'd be happy to give a
recommend!

From the NPR "Talk of the Nation" show, this past Wednesday - it seems that
computer aided mammography is more accurate with film, not digital. Very
interesting info. Listen to the whole thing, twice, unless...well....never
mind.

OK. I'm not trying to be argumentative. But, EggDish was all ga-ga about
state of the art digital imaging, but the story said other things which I
will not mention further, in case someone thinks an 11 word summary is
plenty of ammo for an ongoing debate.

First of all, I think he made a valid request. And second, we are wired to
be interested. If we're not, it means we're dead, or busy fixing a faucet or
some other thing that makes women happy. Can't you people make up your
minds??? :-)

A lot depends on the skill and compassion of the operator, too. Ask her to
take it easy and go slowly.
Had about my tenth in January. Talk about ancient!

I've heard both that it's excruciating (although I think that *may* be
an exaggeration) and that it's nothing to worry about. I'm trying to
not worry about it...but still not looking forward to my first.

A lot depends on whether you have "thickened" breasts--such as
the state caused by the very common fibrocystic breast disease
that something like one in three women have.

No matter how careful the technician is, they *have* to squash
your boobies to get the image. If your breasts feel "like a bag of
water" which is how my doctor says a normal breast feels, it
should not be too uncomfortable. If they are thicker, firmer than
this, the squeezing will be uncomfortable. That said, it is not
something you have to endure for long. I've had two now. I
will go every year, just to be sure all is well.

(I said it "hurt like hell," really it was just uncomfortable. It's
worth it for the peace of mind.)

Though there must truly be exceptions due to particularly sensitive
breasts or insensitive technicians, I urge all women to follow their
physician's recommended mammogram schedules. If you have a physician
who does not make a point of following the standard schedules with
you, inquire why not or get another physician.

If you have fears or have experienced pain before, seek out a center
that specializes in women's health and has a devoted facility for
mammograms, ultrasound and follow-up biopsies if needed (yes,
sometimes they are needed. Been there, Done that.). And it is best, if
possible, to go to the same place annually (or by whatever schedule is
recommended for you) so the previous films can be compared. If you
change facilities, get copies of your films to take to the new one.

A mammogram may be scary or may cause a few minutes of discomfort, but
an undiagnosed breast tumor is much scarier and liable to be much more
uncomfortable, too.

So get your mammogram if you are "of the age" and don't forget to do
your own monthly breast exam. A good mammogram tech or ob-gyn will be
able to show you exactly how to do the self-exam. Learn its shape and
feel so you can immediately notice any changes.

And Gentlemen - encourage your wives, SOs and daughters to do the
right thing (and don't forget to do your own self-exams, too - breast
and testicular).

It's your body. Take care of it. Respect it. Treat it well, for your
own sake, as well as your family's.

I was pleasantly surprised.

This was a brand new imaging center that they built and they had not
talked about it, so I had no idea...

I hope yours goes as well!
I was dreading it. I just turned 45...

No pain, nada. The tech was very gentle too.
Her impersonal approach was just right as well.

Well, just don't be romanced by the word "digital". As the story explain,
it's not a panacea. But, the doctor *does* have to pay for the equipment, so
the doctor has to advertise using the right words, ya know? Sort of like
tire dealers who attract customers who think nitrogen's a lot better than
regular air in the tires.

'Zactly. That was the one I we referring too. :-)

I walked in to the pic area just in time to see the last image on the
screen. That was when I realized it was all digital, not film oriented.

I did not know a single thing about it Joe until Nancy mentioned it a
week or so ago when I mentioned I was going in for my first one.

It's thanks to her I recognized the technology.

<lol>

Those that wear revealing clothing are really silly if they get offended
at men's stares.

I'm not that naive!

I'm so sorry. :-(
Must have been one of the older machines possibly?

I'd heard horror stories, even from the women at work a few years ago
which is why I was dreading it so.

They just built a new Imaging center over the past year or two. I guess
they opted for state of the art.

I have LOTS of fibroid cysts that hurt with pressure and there was no
pain at all. I understand that at least 1 out of 3 women have FBS.

With any luck, it'll go as well as this did. :-)
The humor below might have been true a few years ago, but evidently it
is no longer.

Maybe someone tried it as a screening for Testicular cancer once. <eg>

Hugs!

How to Prepare for a Mammogram

Many women are afraid of their first mammogram, but there is no need to
worry. By taking a few minutes each day for a week preceding the exam
and doing the following exercises, you will be totally prepared for the
test. And best of all, you can do these simple exercises right in your
home.

EXERCISE ONE:
Open your refrigerator door and insert one breast in door. Shut as hard
as possible and lean on the door for good measure. Hold that position
for five seconds. Repeat again in case the first time wasn't effective
enough.
EXERCISE TWO:
Visit your garage at 3 AM when the temperature of the cement floor is
just perfect. Take off all your clothes and lie comfortably on the floor
with one breast wedged under the rear tire of the car. Ask a friend to
slowly back the car up until your breast is sufficiently flattened and
chilled. Turn over and repeat with the other breast.
EXERCISE THREE:
Freeze two metal bookends over night. Strip to the waist. Invite a
stranger into the room. Press the bookends against one of your breasts.
Smash the bookends together as hard as you can. Set up an appointment
with the stranger to meet next year and do it again.

Really??! Then Duke is doing something wrong. I want to go where
they have whatever they used on you. I'll have to ask my doctor.

I think I said that. :-)

Breast exams are a pita because I never know what lump should not be
there! And it generally hurts. It's why I was pleasantly surprised.

I'd expected the pressure to be much greater than it actually was.
Guess the new machines don't have to squash them as flat.

She took three views instead by just changing it's position on the plate
rather than turning it into a pancake.

Men can get breast cancer too. The incidence is lower, but it's still
there.

I'm remembering one of the Star Trek movies, where the crew is in a 20th
century hospital, having travelled back in time. Dr. McCoy observes some of
the treatments going on and calls them savagery.

They never said a word... I only recognized it since Nancy had mentioned
it. Like I said in another post, I walked into the imagine room just as
the last image was being displayed on the screen.

Bravo! Now you can pay it forward and help to dispel the fear many
women have when they hear the word "mammogram."

I know. A few years ago, my doctor found exactly the kind of lump they
say is bad news--very hard, like a peanut, deep in the breast tissue. I had
an ultrasound and they said they saw no sign of cancer.

The next year, no lump AT ALL, no ultrasound was even necessary.

Point is, I did not find the hard lump, for the reason you state above.

Women like us who have thickened breasts and feel we cannot really
do effective exams really should get regular exams.
