Yo, Stan. Were you around Penn for Hey Day? They have the juniors dressed
in Heinz ketchup t-shirts for their installation as the senior class of 2008. The upcoming seniors get pelted with flour, mustard and preferable ketchup to welcome them as THE upperclassmen at the University of Pennsylvania. A big stink is being made of this in light of the Virginia Tech situation. So much that the Philly Inquirer (www.philly.com) is running a poll on whether or not Hey Day should be cancelled. I voted no, as life has to go on. If every college campus pulled in the sidewalks and shuttered the windows to the outside world where would we as society be. -ginny |

I'm not Stan, but I went to Penn and have absolutely no memory of this tradition. I don't recall it ever being men- tioned in the school paper (Daily Pennsylvanian - I think). But then, I graduated in 1970. I'm not saying it doesn't exist. I may have a poor memory or just missed it, or maybe it's a more recent tradition. I *do* remember Rowbottoms, Smokey Joe's and "Drink a highball at nightfall..." I agree about life going on. |

I'll vote no also, but it just seems like a silly tradition anyway, but pretty harmless. Life must continue. |

Granted it's not as harmful as some of the old frat initiations, but it's still pretty stoopid. College kids keep telling us how mature and bright they are. Flour, ketchup and mustard? Go read a good book.... gloria p |

I just checked out the photos on http://www.philly.com and it warms my heart. I don't see that poll, so I am too late to cast my vote, but I would have also voted to carry on the tradition. Working at one of Penn's crosstown rivals, I can tell you that I heartily agree that colleges should not roll up their sidewalks out of fear and uncertainty, although some reasonable security practices can't hurt. |

Go read a good book.... Bah! Humbug. Most traditions are dumb; putting up Christmas lights for example; but many of us enjoy them anyway. |
