Default Whew!

Sun's finally come out in Oregon and it's a good thing...Today was the
kickoff of our volunteer fire dept's annual two day fundraising
rummage & bake sale. A big deal in our little neck of the woods.

Was tickled with the range of home-made goodies people brought in this
am - everything from marionberry pies to breads and killer cupcakes.
Baked my little heart out last night - 2 bundt cakes - lemon &
chocolate chip and a pan of chocolate chunk brownies.

Something for everybody and folks bought like mad...leaving us with
just crumbs for Sunday.... the reason I'm finishing up another baking
siege...double batch blueberry muffins, lemon bars, and 2 more choc
chip Bundt cakes, which still have to cool before I can glaze 'em &
toddle off to bed.

Can't think of the last time I baked this much stuff - actually a lot
of fun. Got a kick out of one volunteer who brought a couple of dozen
"Ranger Cookies" people just raved over. Bumped into her at the
grocery store tonight & asked her if she'd share her recipe. She
giggled & admitted that they were from COSTCO - she'd given a quick
run through the over to give then a home-made "brown." So much for
country cooking!

That's funny. Another shot in the oven didn't dry them out? Huh.

Saintly DH dropped off my goodies at the sale at 8 AM - I drew the
noon shift today. Should have made more lemon bars - he called to say
they were all gone by 8:15. Love to cook, but baking isn't really my
forte.
Folks around here are pretty proud of their baking & as a relative
newcomer, I'm tickled that my efforts have been well received - all
part of carving outing a niche in a rural community.

Madame Costco made me swear I wouldn't spill the beans about her
"secret cookie recipe," but, by golly, if they show up at the County
Fair, all bets are off. The cookies she started with were fairly
thick - big, round, moist & chewy. Think she just gave them a quick
shot under the broiler - to achieve that "home-made" browned look.
Stayed pretty moist, with a few dark edges - sure looked like Grandma
baked them. Sold like hotcakes - with people coming back for more. Go
figure.

That's a funny story. Since the cookies started out moist and chewy,
the broiler probably just crisped them up some. Crispy cookies are the
preferred kind around here, so I can imagine that they would be popular.
It probably brought out more nutty taste in the cookies as well.
