Default timing question

i bought a Griswold #8 cast iron waffle iron ($25. intact & in
very nice condition). after cleaning & seasoning, i want to use
it, but i don't know how long to cook the waffles per side.
my oldest cookbook is mid-1940s, so it assumes an electric
waffle iron.
anyone ever use one of these? any suggestions?

The rule of thumb is "until it stops steaming."

well, that works with electric ones just fine, but this one
requires turning the waffle over to cook both sides. should i
give it 4 minutes per side? 8 minutes?
it's similar to this:

Actually you don't flip the waffle, you flip the pan over. How long
to cook each side is trial and error... a lot depends on how hot....
actually your question is no different than asking how long should you
jerk off, until it's done of course. Sheesh!

Why do humans have orgasms?

So we know when to stop...

Ob food: Pork chops and rice tonight, and probably some steamed broccoli.
Simple, but good.

Default timing question

My mother used an old, castiron waffle maker when we were at the ranch.
She would heat one side until it was hot, ladle in the batter, close
the lid tightly, then flip it over and finish cooking it on the cold side.

I hope that made sense. Invite us over for breakfast and we will figure
it out. ;-)

There is no set time. There are too many factors, like the heat the iron
generates, the amount of batter used, whether it is at the high or low end
of its operating range. Generally, it takes just a few minutes to cook a
waffle, but you can usually count on the waffle being done when the steam
stops rising fro the iron. Lift the top up gently and if it feels like a
gooey resistance, stop and give it a little more time. BTW.... the first
one almost always sticks.

I just quickly glanced at this and I thought it said,
"until it stops screaming." So, I had to slow down and
go back and read it more carefully to see what the heck
was going on here. I was quite relieved to see than
it was just my dyslexia at work here. ;-)
