After that thread was run, it once again got me back into the "observing
cart contents and somatic profile" thing at the store. I go shopping early so there are not many people in the store, usually around 7 am. There were 3 obese women in the meat section when I was back there and only one had a significant amount of junk food in her cart. One woman weighed probably around 250 and her cart was full of fresh frozen chicken, eggs, fresh produce and only two small bags of cheetos. Granted, she also had two loaves of whole wheat bread, but that's another soapbox... Being obese does not always go together with living on crap. ;-) -- Peace, Om Remove _ to validate e-mails. It's damned hard, and it's difficult to see why it's desirable. You can preach cardiovascular health all day long, but it doesn't really mean anything. It's too abstract. A former neighbor once said she gained some insane amount of weight because of her last pregnancy. Unfortunately, one of her older kids was within earshot, and fixed her story by exclaiming that maybe the fat was due to her sending dad out every single night for ice cream, for the past several years. |

Starvation and eliminating particular foods does not work... you can cut out all carbs but if you essentially sit on that billowy butt all day your ass will just get wider and plumper. Since I retired to this life style I've tripled my food intake but I'm in the best physical shape of my life... I put in such long days of such hard labor that no matter how much I eat I don't gain an ounce... and mostly I eat healfthful but I also consume a good share of what some call junk foods... I enjoy potato chips and ice cream, in fact I can pig out by eating the entire family size bag and the whole half gallon at one sitting but I only do this about once every two months. I call myself retired but I've never worked so hard in my life and I enjoy every minute. I know that some obese have legitimate medical problems but for the vast majority physical activity beats dieting every time. Any otherwise healthy 300 pounder out there wants to lose 50 pounds and still eat all they want, just follow me around for 60 days. I eat all the carbs I want, but I also sweat. Eating vegetables is only a small part of their health benefit, the much greater health benefit is in growing your own. Anyone who pends money on gym memberships would do far better working a small vegetable plot; one hour working in the garden is worth eight hours at the gym... actually much more because none of those gym routines simulate real work, and those stupid machines are actually a negative becaue they exercise teh wrong muscle groups and much too repetively... a stairmaster does no more for your leg muscles than masturbating does for your arm muscles. And most folks can't lose an ounce plying there occupations, sitting behind a desk the only exercise is mental masturbation. Anyone who has cut out carbs and after a year is still over weight is gullible fool. |

It is easier said than done, especially with a bum thyroid like I have. No matter what meds I take, my T4 is borderline low normal. It sux, and it's expensive. Eat less, move more. We all know the formula babe. ;-) The easiest I ever lost weight was on a 6 month anorexia binge. 1 small meal about every 3 days followed by lots of water. I lost 80 lbs. in 6 months doing that and it royally ****ed my metabolic rate. I was already undiagnosed hypothyroid at the time and that just made it worse. I was very depressed... The longest I managed to fast was 2 weeks. I DID take vitamin supplements tho'. Don't think I've not considered trying it again when I get really upset. Body fat is there to be lived on in times of famine. What would it hurt to create one? <G> Then there is always DiNitroPhenol.... <eg> (NOT SERIOUS ABOUT THAT!!!) -- Peace, Om Remove _ to validate e-mails. Somedays I FEEL hungry all day and I just have to keep eating. There must be something physical going on those days to give me hunger pains. I have the luck to know when I feel this way to eat only healthy food and in very limited portions and drink plenty of water. But when I'm hungry, there is no way to cheer me up. Eating is a pleasure in life that one should have at least 3x a day. Not obese, Dee Dee |

My infamous niece does not subsist entirely on junk food, though she does have it on a regular basis. She normally eats good, healthy food, but by the ton. She eats all day. She gets in the morning and eats. She snacks while preparing meals, prepares between meal snacks, between snack snacks, and snacks while she is preparing meals and snacks. |

Getting on thyroid therapy snapped me out of it, but did not cure the weight problem. That is multi-faceted and my TSH is still too high. Hypothyroidism can cause depression. -- Peace, Om Remove _ to validate e-mails. "My mother never saw the irony in calling me a Son of a bitch" -- Jack Nicholson |

That's the thing. Smokers can give up cold turkey, but dieters can't. I don't have a bum thyroid, but I hate exercise and love food. Luckily, I'm pretty picky, and would rather have a salad than a Big Mac. But I'm sure you're aware how small transgressions can add up. Thirty calories here, forty there; pretty soon you're talking real weight. My aging memory coughs up a statistic: 23 excess calories a day (every day) results in 50 extra pounds by age 40. Don't hold me to those numbers, but it's amazing how little it takes to produce a big effect over time. Cindy Hamilton |

I was listening to her on thew tube one day, and something she said hit me- "Fat is Fat". I was quite overweight, and none too happy about it, so I got mad! I had a dog at the time, and resolved to take him for power walks. He was a little guy, so we'd only do a few blocks, but I marched! I also reduced my fat intake to 20 grams or less per day. I avoided sweets for the most part at first, so when Snackwells came out, the tasted fantastic to me! Lots of broiled chicken and baked potatoes. I didn't look at carbs, only fats. I lost 60 pounds in 7 months. I tried Atkins a few years back, and maybe lost a few pounds at first, but then nothing. I guess we're all different! |

I sometimes have trouble motivating myself, but I do it. It becomes part of your routine, and when you get yourself into decent shape it becomes easier. My husband is on Atkins. If he eats rice with a meal for dinner, he'll wake up the next morning 5 pounds heavier, and I'm not kidding! I've witnessed it! Me, I'm a carb person. I can eat rice, pasta, potatoes, bread and I don't gain any weight at all. In fact, I keep losing weight and I'm not trying. So, essentially, I cook two meals; one for him and something else for me. kili |

I could no more lose weight on high carb low fat than fly. I've tried it. I GAINED weight on under 1,000 calories per day. Meander around and come back home? No point. On the other hand: spend Saturday lifting lumber on some project? Excellent! Climb the ladder 100 times? I'm on it. Bend over and pick up scrap? You betcha. Pity I'm a computer programmer and not a roofer. Cindy Hamilton |

Builds muscle tone, but it's certainly not aerobic, and neither are the activities you've described. Unfortunately, what's good for our hearts is exercise that's not very interesting. You should see the disastrous data set I'm trying to clean up, sent by one of my customers. Jeez.........I think some companies dose their computers and their IT people with LSD each morning. |

It goes in a circle, like a track, but it is hilly, and I have nice views in the winter and lots of trees in the summer. What made it so nice is that I can go out when I want without going with a group or even asking DH to join me -- however, three days ago, a 6' blacksnake lay on the trail. As you can see, I'm still thinking about that 'walk in the woods.' Not too pleasant. Dee Dee |

My wife does better on an Atkins type diet than I do on one higher in carbs. I can't handle that much meat and fat. My brother in law developed a serious weight problem and developed diabetes among other problems. We was carrying on one day about his incompetent medical because he was on a 1400 calorie per day diet and was gaining weight. I made the mistake of pointing out what he was in the process of eating for breakfast..... a huge bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce and cookies. His reaction reinforced my observations about people with metabolic disorders having erratic mood swings. |

He was standing in the dining room talking to his girlfriend, very excited that his son was coming to visit, having just returned from a year of peacekeeping duty in Bosnia. We went down talking and was dead by the time he hit the floor. |

Now the islands are over run with both. Figures. :~) kili |
