Seattle city officials are considering banning microwave popcorn in
city buildings. It seems like there have been a dozen incidences of folks burning their popcorn and setting off fire alarms, causing the evacuation of hundreds of people. Kinda silly, altho the smell of burnt microwave popcorn is one of the worst! I've done it myself- when the timer goes off, and you can still hear popping, you have the urge to reset the oven for a little more, and then it's too late! |

I don't think it really matters whether it's MW popcorn or something else in the MW. A colleague at work once nuked a bagel so badly it might as well have been over-nuked popcorn. The stench was awful. Colleague was forever teased about blackened bagles afterwards. If the point is to prevent the incidences of burning stuff due to over-nuking in a MW and creating a stink, then the microwaves had better be banned instead MW popcorn. Sky, who knows that won't happen ![]() |

The "buttered" MW popcorn is good (still stinks a little when it's someone else's popcorn), but "extra butter" is nasty. When I'm in an evil mood, I think about heating up a can of catfood in the microwave (and then tossing it in the trash nearby) for everybody to enjoy its aroma. I've never actually done it... Yet. It's probably no worse than some of the fishy leftovers ppl bring in from home and heat up. Bob |

So, some idiots set the timer for 6 minutes, because everyone knows that the 2-4 minute suggestion is an attempt by the manufacturer to make obscene profit margins. |

At work we had a sophisticated fire alarm system. It was positively ear-splitting. There were also bright strobe lights, but I could handle those. When we first moved in, it went off about once a week. That was "testing". Some people just shut their doors and waited it out. It was too hard to get around with a finger stuck in each ear, which was the only way to navigate the hallway. After the testing, it only went off once a month or so. It never happened, but I dreaded the thought of getting caught in the bathroom when it went off. All those tile surfaces, and the alarm right there on the wall. As we huddled outside, there were the inevitable jokes about burnt toast in a break room. Perhaps it was really mw popcorn? Then there was the burglar alarm. I was there for four years, and it was never turned on. I never found out why. I assume it didn't work. It looked quite expensive. I asked my boss about it once a year. She just shrugged her shoulders. Well, if she didn't care, I guess I didn't need to either. Then there were all the cameras. They were everywhere. However, the campus police refused to monitor them unless they were given another full time position. That didn't happen. After a few things got stolen, a security guard was hired to walk around and look official. |

I love good old-fashioned popcorn popped in a pot on top of the stove. My boys love it, too, and I think it is an okay snack food for them. I'd rather my guys eat a little salt and real butter and parmesan cheese instead of a bunch of Frankenfood. Popcorn is a whole grain. I used to have a microwave popcorn popper. I think I lost it in a move. I want to try Alton Brown's lunchbag microwave popping method, but I am scared! Tara |

I don't know what he recommends but from my experience the bag needs to be slightly damp and you definitely need to keep an eye on it. Brown paper lunchbags *can* catch on fire if used in the microwave. Jill |

We've had several people burn popcorn and create a smoky mess at work. I've never witnessed any other food have that happen. Boil-overs, and a mess in the MW, yes. Never any smoke output. I'm not saying it never happens, I just doubt it happens enough to be a concern. I'd just set the microwave for some long time interval, and stand there listening to the popping. Once the popping rate declined considerably from its peak, I'd stop it. When I was at IBM, I once mentioned to the guy next to me that microwave oven should have a built-in microphone to listen for this phenomenon and cut off the process automatically. |

Same where I work, although the alarm is not earsplitting; its a loud voice that tells people to evacuate and blinking lights all over the place, plus a sprinkler fire suppression system on each floor. We occasionally get a false alarm due to burned popcorn or some other burned food. I once walked by a toaster oven at work about a year ago when a colleague's toasting bagel was in the process of being charred to an unrecognizable state. I could see the smoke rise to a nearby fire alarm sensor, and yup, the whole building had to be evacuated. We were all told in no uncertain terms that failure to leave the building during a fire alarm was grounds for termination, so my whole floor emptied out, as did all the other floors. Sigh! |
