Welcome to the group! I know posting to usenet with webtv isn't easy,
but you've avoided a lot of webbie pitfalls like posting in all caps
and posting with an HTML sig line.... so you're ahead of the curve.

I wanted to let you know that I'm finding your posts hard to read
because previous quotes aren't attributed with > marks and there is no
spacing between the quoted text and your reply. I think quoting with
a right angle bracket ...>... is called "smallify" in webtv talk.
Hopefully there are other webtv posters here who can jump in and tell
you how to do it.

The following might point you in the right direction although it
sounds very tedious
http://new2html.web-nuts.com/Smalify.shtml
http://community-2.webtv.net/mollorr...ext/page2.html

These look like web based programs to make smallifying easier
http://www.angelfire.com/mt/jdhardball/smallifier.html
http://www.geocities.com/seedythetec...smallify1.html

and just for fun

Any idea why the use of proper quote indicators would be called
"smallify" in WebTV talk?

Hee hee. See my X-WebTV-Stationery header.

My pleasure! Enjoy the ride.

To me WebTVers are a species even less evolved than Google Gropers.

Dunno...WebTV has no quote text editor, you have to put the ">"'s in
manually...

I used WebTV for three years back in the day (starting in '98) it was
always called that...

I pretty quickly discovered free Usenet services like Remarq and Deja,
so I didn't have to deal with the ghastly WebTV "newsreader"...

Dunno why WebTV still has Usenet capability, there are still some
older boxes around that have it. The newer WebTV box, known as
"MSNTV" has no Usenet capability at all...even the MSN ISP dropped
Usenet years ago, strange.

I think it's their tools, Blinky.... really, when you have to use an
off site program to quote properly, it's *not* entirely their fault
and it's certainly not easy. My hat is off to WebTVers who blend in.

Google has it's own set of problems. For one, they need to bring back
the "tree" so threads can be easily followed. Another feature they
need to add is the ability to filter out titles, authors and key
words.

And:

3. Remove the ability to post through the interface. That's where the
troubles began.

Thanks for showing it can be done... but I need to be hit over the
head with the method. On both of my browsers, there is nothing
directly across from the subject line. I see "hide options" above,
not an option for a "tree". So, what do they call it? This is what I
see "Reply | Reply to author | Forward | Print | Individual
message | Show original | Report this message | Find messages by
this author"

I went to the main RFC page, clicked on "Ping: Smitty AKA: JS
smallify text" in the right hand column under "Active older topics"
which took me to the message page. At the top of the message
page, I see:

"Ping: Smitty AKA: JS smallify text" Options ["Options" is
underscored]

Click on "Options" and you should see "View as tree". You need
to select "Options" at the top of the page, not "more options" at the
top of an individual message.

Hmm..that is odd.

For me, it stays as a tree with any thread I view. Not sure if I did
anything different than you did though.

Thanks Kevin (and thanks Steve).... I get it now!
It's at the very top - in the *dark* gray area.

the two sites that smaillify text for you?"

Yes I did ,kind of complicated but will work on it.Was floored to find
out this also shows up on Google Groups.Never signed up for google
groups, just post thru the webtv home page where it says 'discuss',then
did a search for 'food' groups.
I have an older 'classic' box that I bought in 1998 at Big Lots for
$59.00,mainly to email my family.I liked it because it served my
perpose, got free upgrades, and didnt want to shell out $2000 dollars for
a computer just to send email. The new MSNTV Ive heard is hell to a lot
of users. My old set works fine.Ive done some nice webpages for
friends..very happy with it.AOL screws up a lot when people send me
photos(comes up blank) and various other browsers..Im computer -deprived
you might say.
Thanks for understanding
Cheers,Smitty

Type your reply into your newsreader, previous quotes and all
(trimming as necessary)... copy and paste it into the site, so when
you click "smallify" the quoted text will also get another >. Or
maybe you can't copy and paste. I'm not familiar enough with webtv to
know. If you don't have a mouse, the keyboard strokes are
copy: ctrl c
paste: ctrl v

Things are looking good, Smitty! If you stay in the wide world of
regular usenet, maybe you'll be inspired to buy a computer someday.
Entry level computers are a lot less than 2K!

Slapping forehead! What was I thinking? DON'T REPLY FIRST. Copy and
paste what you are replying to into that smallify site, copy/paste it
back into your news reader - THEN reply.

Thank goodness you know how to copy/paste without a mouse! Most
people don't.

I actually had to think about why you said "dumbest" and not "dumber".
That's an LOL even if I don't agree with you, so I'll give you credit
