I'm just curious about something. In YOUR opinion, what is the advantage of
a shutoff timer on a deep frier? I'm asking you to answer this question
without referring back to the selling features on the web site.

The advantage is that I forget to unplug the one I have. I am taking
some strong meds. Last night, I plugged it up without taking off the
lid.

No offense intended at all, but if you're taking strong meds you should
refrain from deep frying at all.

Accidents happen and deep fryer accidents can maim or kill you.

This is what I thought, although I was thinking perhaps of too many
cocktails while cooking. I'll agree with Bluto. You should not be operating
a deep fryer, or maybe even a stove. This may sound insulting, but I believe
your local fire chief would agree.

As far as the feature on the model you showed us, the selling point is a
lie: "a 30-minute auto shut-off timer so you can cook to perfection
everytime."

I will echo that one. Deep frying can be hazardous. It is not the way to
cook if you are cognitive or perceptual problems from medication. If you
are on strong pain medication it could help for the nasty burn you are
likely to get.

I have made it a habit to always turn off and unplug my deep fryer as soon
as I remove whatever I cooked in it.

I wondered about this, too, at first. Then I realized that the
shutoff timer isn't for timing the cooking, (I sure wouldn't leave the
food sitting in the cooling oil), but for safety.

What if there were an emergency and you had to leave in a hurry? What
if you unplugged the wrong cord and the fryer stayed on? What if you
just forgot?

A lot of people have left a coffee maker, (some have been recalled for
being fire hazards), the oven or a stove burner turned on.

Hasn't anyone here forgotten where he put his car keys? Ever leave
your headlights on? Have you ever forgotten to pay a bill and got hit
with a late fee even though you'd never missed a payment before? Have
you ever been involved in a car accident? Were you on drugs at the
time? Why would anyone suggest that ordinary forgetfullness is a sign
of drug or alcohol use?

You'll probably now say that you were just kidding, but it wasn't
funny. Just nasty comments to a poster who asked a legitimate
question.

The poster said herself "I am taking some strong meds"... perhaps so
are you or you would read more cognitively and not have to run off on
a rant.

No one taking meds strong enough that they *forget* should be doing
any kind of cooking... nothing more involved than pouring cold milk
into bowls of freaky flakes.

Forget the shutoff valve. I don't know, but I suspect that Rival "hunk of
junk" is not
cast metal. If so, don't buy it. Presto used to make excellent cast aluminum
fryer. On the Walmart ad in your post it looks like they are pushing the
same kind of junk that all the rest of the deep fryer manufacturers are.
An exception might be:
http://www.gopresto.com/products/pro...hp?stock=05450
though how could you ever buy something called "DualDaddy"????
Having said that, I suppose that could happen with a *** couple.

No, I wasn't kidding at all. The selling points describe the timer as a
cooking feature, and it's entirely possible that some people will see it
that way, too. I see it as nothing at all because if I'm exhausted, too
busy, or perhaps doing a wine tasting with friends, there are certain things
I won't bother doing because I know they won't turn out so well.

As far as nasty comments, please point out exactly which words of mine you
considered nasty.

Default Cook's Illustrated Deep-Fryer Tests (Warning: HTML)

We have a Waring Pro and absolutely love it.
I wonder why it wasn't in the running.

Anyway, it has an immersed heating element, so when you add the food,
the oil comes back to temp very quickly.

We've made huge amounts of food and in the end the oil level barely
dropped, which means it didn't end up in the food.

It's also very easy to clean.
