Bourdain on Ruhlman. Always a good read.

The usual Bourdain savaging of Food Network. What puzzled me was this:

"And even the Food Net might--at this point in history--be willing to
defy their traditional, core audience "older Bible Belt" consituency
with an openly *** host in the hopes of attracting newer, younger
viewers."

Ummm, has Tony already forgotten the first season winners?

Maybe he has, or perhaps he wasn't watching it then. But yes, the
winners of the first "Next FN Star" series were those openly *** guys
(whose show is terrible, IMO); and Reggie, who was obviously ***, made
it to the finals last time. So Paul (if I recall the guy's name)
strikes me as this season's token blatantly *** guy. That, plus the
guy's skittishness tell me he hasn't got a chance in Hades of winning
this contest. I don't know what Bourdain is smoking in rooting for
this guy; maybe it's just preference for one of the underdogs. My
underdog of choice for this season is Jag, but I expect him to be
going fairly soon -- especially now that it's emerged he fabricated
and/or misrepresented some of his military and culinary experience.

And wasn't Guy Fiero (sp) last year's winner? I hardly think he's who
they'd choose to appeal to older Bible Belt types.

At least, I wasn't aware that bleach blond loud guys with a lot
of bling was Bible Belt taste.

Isn't that their kids? It would be just like a visit home from their

Haha! You're right. I like his show, I like the Hearty Boys, too.

I have no idea who I'd like from the current crop, though. I've only
seen one episode.

Tony B. is always so impressed with the sound of his voice, both
literally and figuratively, that he annoys me no end. His criticisms
of the contestants' efforts may have been valid, but there was no
reason for him to be so sarcastic and just plain nasty.

I don't have a favorite yet - maybe Amy, although I don't know how
much substance is there....

Supposedly Jag claims he was released from the military as a corporal
when he was really released as a private; he claimed he saw combat
service in Afganistan when he did not (although he apparently responds
that the FN played a role in this fiction, since they were seeking a
person withc combat experience); and he claims to have graduated from
a NY culinary school which he really attended without graduating.

All put together, them's some pretty big "misrepresentations."
Apparently, FN isn't worried any more about credibility issues.

Jag is a glaring fake, as is Tony Bourdain.

I like Bourdain's books, but I would never patronize a restaurant at
which he is the chef. Bourdain is a former long-time heroin junkie
who prefers to hire ex-cons and illegal aliens over people who
graduated from culinery school.

He hates his patrons, hates educated people, hates everyone who
disagrees with him, gleefully serves substandard food if he just
doesn't like your face.

He had a show on FN, and when it wasn't renewed, lashed out against it
like a jealous little boy who didn't get
his way. He made insultive statements against FN and its programs and
hosts..

If he hates FN so much, why did he take a job with them?

Keep writing, Tonino, (that's where your talent lies), but stay out of
the kitchen.

He's a *former* junkie. Why would you hold that against him?

And Bourdain gives good, convincing reasons for hiring the (mostly
Mexican) people he hires.

Where are you getting these ideas, Janos? Please be specific.

What are you smoking? Bourdain left the Food Network when they told
him the shows he likes to do -- particularly one about Ferran Adira
and El Bulli -- didn't fit their business model. The FN wanted him to
stop travelling abroad, stop featuring foreigners, and to start
emphasizing barbecue and hamburgers. They wanted to dumb him down,
turn him into anther Bobby Flay -- and Bourdain walked. He deserves
tons of respect for it; the FN deserves our continued contempt.

> If he hates FN so much, why did he take a job with them?

Usually, one doesn't get to know an entity until one is experienced
with it. Bourdain's show was the best thing the FN ever ran. It's
their fault, not his, that it ended, and the FN deserves ever jibe
Bourdain makes against them.

Then he's liar. He hires them cuz they're cheap. End of story.
Mexicans don't chop lettuce better than anyone else.

So, now we get him bad mouthing everyone else in the industry and

He's fake?

How is he fake?

Even if what you say below is true, it's pretty real.

He hires people who can cook. Culinary school is no
guarantee of that. Nor are lack of a criminal record
and a wet back.

>He hates his patrons,

Arrogant ones. But who doesn't?

See above re arrogant ones.

Never heard it said before.

FN changed its format in a way that even I can't
stomach any more. It doesn't care about the promotion
of cuisine at all. It's become a pandering sideshow.

His Travel Channel show is a lot better anyway. There
should be a special Emmy or something for his episode
in Beirut.

>He made insultive statements against FN and its programs and

Nothing wrong with that. As I said above, they
deserve it.

>If he hates FN so much, why did he take a job with them?

He didn't hate it until after it hated him. Life's
like that. I bet you still love me, though.

What are you doing to me, disagreeing? Why would that bother a normal
person? Does everyone you know agree with everything you say and
think? Not possible.

??? How does one love a person he's never heard of?

We've argued about Bourdain before, NB, and your comments here are a
reminder that you know extremely little about the guy; and you've
paradoxically got some weird issues with him. Bourdain goes into
detail in several of his books as to why he likes to employ Mexicans
(they're skilled & hard workers). Your comments about Mexicans "being
cheap" and "chopping lettuce" amount to mere stereotyping. Bourdain
doesn't badmouth "everyone in the industry." He's generous in his
praise for good cooks. He does, however, bash many of the *FN
personalities*, and he does so amusingly & creatively. They deserve
his contempt.

Then clearly Bourdain is (by your logic) an abnormal person.

Logic continues: And since there is no established "normal" person, it
follows that there can be no "abnormal" person. That means either that
Bourdain is by necessity not abnormal, or that he does not in fact exist
at all. You decide.

>
>> I bet you still love me, though.

You've heard of Blair. You read his posts here, so you know of him. What
you haven't done is meet him, just as you haven't met Bourdain. But
you've heard of Bourdain, obviously. It's unlikely that you would love
either Bourdain or Blair just because you've heard of them -- you would
have to actually interact with them on a personal level for that. For
the same reason, it's just as unlikely that you would hate them. So what
drives your hatred of Bourdain, a man you've heard of but never met?

He's flagellating himself right now for not agreeing with you.

This thread becomes more disturbing each minute.
Why would anyone become so upset at not being agreed with?

It is strange that so many people don't believe in freedom of speech.
It seems to be a problem that affects Muslims and Republicans.

I like Tony-Rony an awful lot, but I think he acted like some scared
spoiled brat on that show - I haven't seen a new episode since. Has
there been one?

I think it was the most boring episode one of all -- an half-hour show
at best. Need we have seen every furrowed brow of his hour-by-hour as
he was 'WAITING....." Ugh!

Is "Bible Belt" and area or a mind-set, or both. Is it always the
South; can there be a Southern as well as a Northern Bible Belt? Do
people who have Bible Belt taste have different tastes as opposed to
what? normal people?

Just trying to figure out these stereotypes of Rednecks, Bible Belt
persons, I suppose there are more ... older Bible Belt types vs.

I'm showing my age, but I think that being a heroin junkie shows a
lack of character.

In his book, "Les Halles Cookbook", he didn't even know what type of
potato he was serving, (there is a photo of the box). He named the
distributor instead of the variety.
Every old lady knows the difference in potatoes. He doesn't.

He likes Emeril.

Not Emeril's show, maybe. But his food and his chops.

You're showing confusion more than age. I've reminded you already
that Bourdain is a *former* heroin addict. He conquered it. What
could be more characterful than that?

I'm a bit skeptical of this story. But help me out: What type of
potatoes (which you say TB could not identify) are in this pic?

Why are you skeptical of this story? You could read his books for
yourself. You don't even have to buy them, you could borrow them from
your local public library for free.

(The public library is a place where you can borrow books to
read...ever hear of it...books...read)?

If "every old lady" knows her potatoes so well, it's funny that you
*can't* identify the ones in the photo.

He's bashed Emeril's appearance and antics (and his audience), but
admitted that Emeril is a real cook who had paid his dues. My
impression is that TB stopped bashing Emeril after he met several of
Emeril's workers in New Orleans and found that they had nothing but
good things to say about their employer.

You're supposed to watch it with the sound on, and use

There are more potato varieties in the U.S. than in Poland. Bourdain
could have named any of them, but didn't.

The box in the photo and Bourdain's comment is the name of the
distributor. Maybe you should do your homework before responding to
posts you know nothing about.

Your homosexual crush on Bourdain isn't a big deal, but you don't have
to make up lies.
He's never going to like you.

There are more potato varieties in the U.S. than in Poland. Bourdain
could have named any of them, but didn't, he named the distributor
instead.
Get over your obsession with Bourdain and do your homework. He's
never going to like you. (Even if he sends you an autographed photo).

Focus on someone more attainable for someone like you. Elvis, for
instance.
