I did the bean pickles first. :-)
After dinner (maybe 7:05ish) I drove to Sur la Table. Pretty funny. They didn't have what I was looking for (a butter curler -- mine has disappeared) and once that was ascertained, they ignored me. I wandered the store and happened to overhear conversation about closing out the register, how to do it, blahblahblah. All of a sudden a woman approached me and said they didn't know I was in the store and they are now closed (20 minutes ago). I said I'd come a bit of a distance so I hoped they wouldn't mind if I took my time leaving the store. We figure they went home and told their husbands about the nutcase in the store at closing time. Skroom. They close at 8:00 p.m. I probably got there at about 7:45 or so. I went *next door* to Cooks of Crocus Hill and saw that they were still open (until 9:00). They had some concerns about Surly Table opening in the area, and they're counting on good service to carry them through. They didn't have a butter curler either but found one in the St. Paul store and offered to have it sent over for me. I need to see it first. I want one with a nice rosewood handle like mine has. Actually, what I want is MINE! Dangitall. Surly Table has Demeyere cookware. Holy crap, that stuff is expensive! My Bigass jam kettle is Demeyere and I bought it at SlT in Seattle in 1999. It was $165 then. Alex only knows what it costs now. I think I don't want to know. I hope Cooks can prevail. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.jamlady.eboard.com - story and pics of Ronald McDonald House dinner posted 6-24-2007 |

I've never been to one. But the fact that they ignored Barb when they didn't have her particular style of butter curler, to the point of not even knowing she was still in the store at closing, strikes me as possibly snobbish. As if to say, "We know she won't buy anything so let's don't waste our time." Granted, I hate when salespeople hover over me but I do like to be acknowledged from time to time. Jill |

I don't know if I'd classify that as snobbish so much as a bad business move. Especially since they have another similar store right next door! |

If I remember correctly, it was a new store so the employees were probably not experienced/trained enough to offer checking another store and rather than ignoring her, I think they didn't even know she was still in the store *past closing time*. Thing is, apparently many of the stores around them don't stay open until 9:00. I was told that, in fact, many close at 6:00, most by 7:00. Seems strange to me because it is an upscale area (not a mall) and I think they'd want as many customers in the evening as they could get and would have hours that reflect that. OTOH, maybe their customer base is wealthy suburban women who don't work outside their home and can readily shop during the day. There weren't many customers in the place at 7:40 p.m. Dunno. Inasmuch as the store had been open for only four days, I'm willing to cut them some slack as far as knowing their stock, etc. I do think it's funny that they didn't know I was there. I wasn't skulking around. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.jamlady.eboard.com - story and pics of Ronald McDonald House dinner posted 6-24-2007 |

Especially since they have another similar store right next door! I agree. And for the sake of accuracy, I've been reminded that Cooks of Crocus Hill is actually maybe 3 doors down -- not "right next door." :-) -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.jamlady.eboard.com - story and pics of Ronald McDonald House dinner posted 6-24-2007 |

Had similar experience in Abercrombie and Fitch (which my son calls Pitchafit and Bitch). Hub and I went in and looked around.......actually had a clerk tell hub that maybe what we were looking for couldn't be found in their store, possibly Kmart, as they reach a more upscale clientele........hub is a jeans and tshirt kind of guy, but hey, I thought they sold those there as well.........needless to say, he was 'good' didn't turn the air too blue, but did ask the clerk did he see him pick his ass or rub boogies on the merchandise....at this time the dude was getting a little twitchy.....then hub pulls out his money clip, asks clerk what color the papers inside were.....clerk stutters green.......hub tells him that all he needs to know about his customer's lifestyle is that he has green which is the same green that any Muffy or Biff would bring in, and that same green pays his salary, which is probably equal to or less than that of a Kmart employee.......and thanks for pointing out that no purchases would be made by us that day or in the future from his fine establishment....... I know A&F is still in business, but I believe that store is no more. Power to the people. -ginny |

Apparently it was named Surly because of "the anger fueled by the inability to find good beer". That part is a little contentious, IMHO; there still are a few excellent breweries in the area (Schell's, Summit). But that's what I would expect from someone who was Surly. :-p sd |
