Default Dinner tonight

Our air conditioner died Sunday. The furnace fan is dead, not worth
replacing on a 33 yr. old furnace. We have a satisfactory estimate for
replacing the furnace and heat exchanger but the earliest anyone can
install is next Tuesday. Most companies I called wouldn't even commit
to a schedule to look at repairs. It's currently 96 deg. outdoors and 92
indoors despite keeping all the windows open overnight and closing the
house up this AM. We have a guest in the house all week, here on
business. Everyone is on a diet. Whine.

Tonight's dinner:

A platter of curried chicken salad with pineapple, grapes, and toasted
slivered almonds; cut up mango, red and yellow peppers, sliced avocado,
sliced fresh peaches.

Caprese salad

Croissants

Dessert: cantaloupe balls and blueberries with sherbet

It's so hot!!!! (Have I mentioned that?)

When I hear of weather like that it makes me realize how contented I am to
live in a moderate zone where we get winter but not too severe and
reasonable levels of heat in the summer. I only had my A/C on one night
last summer, and that was because we had guests who are used to even cooler
summer temperatures.

I have been off my feed for the last week or so. I had breakfasts and light
lunches but when dinner time came I was uninspired to cook and not
particularly interested in eating. This afternoon I was a little more
interested in having a nice dinner, but not he pork chops that we thawing.
I put them pack into the freezer and headed over to the grocery for a nice
steak. Then I spotted the lamb chops. I prefer lamb chops to steak. So we
bought the lamb chops instead. Dinner was the chops, fresh rolls and a
Mesclum salad with blue cheese dressign and some blue cheese grated on top
of that. We also stopped at the bakery ion town that makes fresh cherry
pies and sells them for such a good price that it's not worth baking them
myself. The pie was even better with a scoop of my home made banilla ice
cream on the side.

!! Yay! Funny thing is, I didn't think anyone would care for the
looks of that recipe, I only posted it because I was leery of the
amount of water called for. Me, I like that recipe. Too bad the
store didn't have any short ribs today, or I would have made that
for dinner, too.

Gloria, please email me about (central) air conditioners if you're
inclined. I had my central a/c (and furnace) replaced last week after
three weeks without one, and I did a whole bunch of homework (I hope).

Sky, who's nice and cool now

I made some, too, but I will not serve them until tonight. I call them
Nancy's Hungarian Short Ribs, but I do not follow her recipe very
closely. No sugar in mine and other little liberties make it more like
the way my Mother made them. However, if not for Nancy, I would not
have had to urge to make them for a second time since she posted the
recipe a couple of months ago. I used sugar the first time, but didn't
like that taste too much. I adjusted the seasonings and it was
delicious. I used no sugar this time.

Thank you, Nancy!

Aw, shucks, 'twarn't nuthin ... yeah, I like the style of ribs, but I'm not
married to the recipe or anything. I like your idea of making them a
day ahead. Of course, it would require some willpower to not have
them as soon as they're cooked.

You have my empathy! Last time I replaced an entire central A/C and
heating system (including duct work), it cost me $2,250. My tax return
covered it so I was able to get it done in cooler weather...

I have SO got to make one of those for a potluck! ;-d
Preferably with 'maters from the farmers market.

Well, it's not as hot as it might be; the old folks living in those
brick ovens in the city haven't started to die yet. Still, it's time to
start checking in with the elders and the infirm. Once the temp rises
past a certain point, fans do more harm than good by directing a
dehydrating blast of hot air past sweaty skin.

Even so right now light yard work is so debilitating and bike rides have
to be slotted at dawn to avoid the heat and the ozone. By noon you can
taste the air on the back of your tongue, feel the UV shriveling your
skin, at which point it's time to bring all people and pets inside where
there's A/C.

Everyone loved the short ribs last night. I cooked the recipe exactly
like it was written, only I guessed at the measurements. I may have used
a little less brown sugar and a little more dry mustard. Anyway, it was
delicious. Thanks.

Grilled farmer sausage and nuked french cut green beans were supper for me
and lunch tomorrow.
