Default Ben & Jerry's & Wheat


Ben & Jerry's was on sale yesterday so I thought I'd try some since I've
never had it before. They all had wheat flour in them..... well I think
they all did but I stopped reading the labels after five flavors. Even
if I wasn't gluten intolerant, I'd still be shying away from products
that use unnecessary fillers. And I've heard people rave about this ice
cream. How about a nice bowl of Cream of Wheat instead?

I picked up some remarkable sourdough rye with caraway seeds at Wegman's
yesterday. The label also said it contained wheat, but I figured what the
hell. You only go around once. Roll the dice.

Decent rye breads always contain wheat flour since rye alone makes a
terribly dense loaf. Wheat in ice cream, OTOH, is nothing but a filler.

Well, then I think it's only right that you punish the company by
withholding your business. Remember, however, that they will never get your
message unless you also write to them and tell them why you didn't buy their
ice cream.

How do you know the wheat flour was a filler? What were the flavors? You
should expect flour in many flavors as a component of the add-ins like
cookie dough, cookies and cream, and similar.

Looking at some onion dill rye I have on hand, I see these flours - in
this order - in the list:

....wheat flour...malted barley flour...rye flour...[and "vital wheat
glutin"]

This is a small sampling, but I wonder if this might not be the norm.

I know there are various types of flour in rye bread. I was pushing the

Casting aside gluten intolerance for the moment, if a person's about to eat
a bowl of fat & sugar, does it really matter if it's got some flour in it?
We're not talking about diethylene glycol, found in toothpaste from China.

Then, they complain about ingredients here, where it is virtually guaranteed
that the manufacturer has nobody watching for consumer reactions.

It does to some of us. There is no reason to use all the fillers in ice
cram. We want our fat and sugar to be pure, not loaded down with gums and
fillers to cheapen the product and lessen the purity of taste and texture.
Some of us are willing to pay a fair, even though higher price, for quality.

Well, Ben and Jerry's now does contain guar gum and such since it's been
bought by the big boys. However, not all flavors contain wheat which
was what the original poster was complaining about.

Just go to the site http://benandjerrys.com/our_products/ and on the
first paragraph of text choose "go now". You can then click on the map
for ice cream or sorbet or whatever and choosing the desired carton will
bring up the ingredients. I couldn't find wheat on any of the flavors
that didn't contain cookies, brownies or the like.

Yeah, I was rather surprised to see the amount of gums and fillers in
B&J products, considering that it's marketed as a premium. It has more
of that stuff than Breyers, which itself sadly started putting a small
amount of carrageen in some time back.

Now, I understand that B&J still probably has higher butterfat and less
air than Breyers. However, its cost is about the same as Haagen-Dazs,
so it's really hard to justify the adulteration. It does have more
fancy flavors than H-D, so if you're into that sort of thing I guess it
might be worth it.

Whatever floats your boat. The official answer when Breyers started
(they, along with B&J are owned by Unilever) was that it was to prevent
the problem of ice crystals due to refreezing.

Fine Cooking just rated Ben & Jerry's Chocolate as the best
available....and they do not take advertising to make the claim.

Runners up were Ciao Bella, Edy's Grand, Breyers and Haagen-Dazs.
Green & Black's organic rounded out the tasting.

Ben & Jerry's ice cream often contains things like brownies or cookies (or
cookie dough). THAT is where the wheat comes in; they use flour to make
those things. I don't think the ice cream itself has wheat.

Sometimes I wonder if you have a clue or if you stay up nights thinking
of ways to garner some attention. You already know I am gluten
intolerant so it's kind of puerile to pretend otherwise. But beyond
that, I think a worthwhile question for all but the utterly braindead
is: Why in the world would they put wheat in ice cream--- especially a
premium ice cream? And if they are using things like wheat flour to
thicken it, is it really ice cream or just some other kind of frozen
dessert?

How many people who make their own ice cream put wheat flour in it? I'm
betting it's a big fat zero, though I have no doubt that, just to be
contrary, someone will post that s/he does put wheat in ice cream.
Obviously it's a filler since it's not listed as a flavor. It has
nothing to do with poisons from China. It's a cheap filler.

I've eaten plenty of Breyer's without either wheat or ice crystals.
Blue Bunny and many other wheatless* brands don't have ice crystals
either.

They need to update their website then. I looked are 4 or 5 flavors in
pint size B&J and they all had wheat flour in them. I said that in my
post too and that I had not looked at every single one. I never bother
looking at the cookie flavors since it's so obvious they will have wheat.

Wasn't *that* (preventing ice) about guar gum or something? I don't think
it's about the wheat.

And when I went to the market earlier, I took a look at five flavors of Ben
& Jerry's. Of the five flavors - Chunky Monkey, Cherry Garcia, Black & Tan,
Vanilla Caramel Swirl and S'mores, only the S'mores had wheat flour listed
as an ingredient.
