I just returned from visiting my brother-in-law in Napa, CA, and was
amazed that Whole Foods is building a store right next to Trader Joes in Napa. Customers are probably rejoicing, but would a store want to locate right next door to their "rival" where people can easily comparison shop? Maybe Whole Foods has intentions on buying Trader Joes. Would Whole Foods have deeper pockets than Trader Joes, and win in a price war? Tom |

Price point - wise they aren't exactly "rivals"...TJ's touts itself as a "value for money" sort of place, WH is popularly known as "Whole Paycheck" because of their high prices... Just a guess, but I'd think both stores would do well, even creating a type of beneficial "synergy" between them... -- Best Greg |

In perceived high-quality stores people do not "comparison shop," they tend to impulse buy. Comparison shopping is for Safeway's and Albertsons elsewhere. pavane |

TJs is opening another store in my town, and this one will be a block or so from the brand new Sprouts that just opened. Go figure. Paul |

It's like seeing Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's (or whatever the regional hotspot burger chain is) all grouped together. There's no lack of business at any of them. It's called competition. Jill |

But I do not buy items at a higher price that I can buy a the 'low quality stores.' Why in the world would I do that? Why would anyone do that? Perhaps someone that doesn't give a damn, but most of us are not that way about our money. And I don't even consider buying the crap at some 'lower-quality stores" that they charge higher prices for than the 'high-quality stores' just because they know that there are some people believe they're getting a good deal by shopping there. Wake up and smell the roses! Dee Dee |

I've only seen two stores in my growing area close down. Namely, Two Safeways, and one Kroger. Dee Dee |

Trader Joe's carries many items that you'll never see at a Whole Foods store, but they do compete on some types of items such as cheeses. Also, Whole Foods carries many items that you won't see at Trader Joe's, such as fresh meats and seafood. Be that as it may, I can think of two neighborhoods close to where I live where there are competing supermarkets within walking distance of one another. |

I do shop at Where I live there is a TJs and a Whole Foods fairly close in the town of Rockville but not next door to each other. I have used both long enough to know in advance which store I will use for many items. These are some current opinions but the local branches are not strictly comparable especially on fresh produce where WF has a much greater range. Often it is worthwhile paying high WF prices for the quality of vegetables but I buy most of mine at regular supermarkets. I like TFs custom of selling bananas by unit instead of weight :-) but most other fruits and vegetables are prepackaged, which I dislike. The local TJs has a much better range of frozen fish and vegetables but has very little fresh fish (and that is prepackaged and probably defrosted), whereas WF is pretty good (better than regular local supermarkets except for the expensive small Balduccis chain). TJs range of coffee is good enough that I never consider buying it anywhere else unless I am in a hurry. Both TJ and WF have quite good bread but, IMHO, the local Giant supermarket is just as good. And on some things WF isn't too bad. A lot of times I shop WF for specific things that I might not find other places. They have some great prepared foods and actually the other week I got a fresh made pizza that was cheaper than delivery. Their 365 brand is usually pretty fairly priced. Now TJ's is definitely a better buy on most things and if I time it right I get my milk and eggs there. -- Queenie *** Be the change you wish to see in the world *** |

I won't ever again buy cheese at Trader Joe's, because of the off-flavors. I don't know where these off-flavors come from -- it could be from the plastic wrap that TJ's uses or it could be odors that penetrate the wrap. But I've wasted too much money on cheese that I ended up throwing away. Whole Foods doesn't have that problem. For just about everything else, I buy at TJ's. |

It is utterly fantastic. Has not anyone seen this store? I've been to many WF's, but this is amazing. Dee Dee |
