I have never been to Detroit but will be there for 3 days on BIZ.
I love ethnic food of ALL varieties & would like to make it to a few killer restaurants that are a "MUST GO TO". Name, approx address, type of food, price from 2 to low to 10 very expensive. Thanks |

When in doubt - ask a man on the street, or a concierge. N. |

The area is rather large and spread out and I often find that when people say they are coming to Detroit they actually mean a suburb. If you want a listing of everything there is one here, look under resturannts: www.detnews.com > |

I'd hate to recommend something in Dearborn if you're actually going to be in Troy. Of course, perhaps you really are going to be in Detroit, contrary to all reasonable expectation. Cindy Hamilton |

I like hot, but this was over the top. Don't remember the name, but it was right in town. Change your money at the casino. I went to this site but did not find anything too exciting. I don't
classify hotdogs, burgers or F&C as ethnic foods when coming from North America (Canada). I more correctly sud have used the word "exotic. As in culinary delights, I can not dine on in Vancouver, B.C. Canada Have a great day! Warren, huh? I don't get east of Dequindre very often, but here are some nearby suggestions. Picano's (Italian) on Rochester road between Big Beaver and Wattles The Blue Nile (Ethiopian) in Ferndale Tom's Oyster Bar on Main south of 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak in fact, there are a bunch of good places on Main in Royal Oak Loon River Cafe on Mound in Sterling Heights not ethnic but they have an interesting selection of game I'm afraid Detroit isn't famed for ethnic cuisine, except for Middle Eastern, and I think that's been covered by others. La Shish is good, and they've got a number of different locations (although the best is reckoned to be the original in Dearborn). I think there's one on Rochester Road, which isn't too far from Warren. Cindy Hamilton |

I wonder if Memphis Smoke is still in Royal Oak; that was a good BBQ joint. There are lots of good places to eat downtown if you go to Greektown; Fishbones was my favorite. May I recommend lunch at a National Coney Island; get the Coney Dog with the chili and loose hamburger meat. There are a lot of Polish Italian restaurants around Detroit that are good. The Polish American Convention Center (I think it was on 16 mile in Warren) had a great lunch. |

I always find it sad when folks from the suburbs give others a dim view
of Detroit and the many good eateries available plus a pleasant nite on the town. As with ANY inner city it would be wise to have some one who is familiar with Detroit to be your guide for the days you are here & not one who screams in horror when nearing the famous 8 mile rd. border between Detroit & suburbs. As mentioned there is the one city block of old buildings converted into restaurants called Greek Town, good food but most have long lines of awaiting customers -no reservations- plus area is very safe day/nite& only few blocks from the Detroit River. You have the casinos in area with buffets which people have told me is excellent. Not having a lot of different ethnic restaurants in Detroit is also not entirely true either. Hamtramck- Polish- A number of home cooked polish dinners to choose from. Dearborn- largest population of arabs in usa your pick of restaurant to eat. Mexican Town part of Detroit has hundreds of street vendors selling authentic mexican food from their homeland but most are also illegals & none of the folks I know who have eaten these vendors tacos had no ill after effects. A number of good soul food retaurants are in area also. Royal Oak was mentioned in previous post -suburbs- which is a hot spot for both kids & yuppies and does have a number of good places to eat, my b/f has work in city over 17 years in family restaurant and also serves those coney dogs with meatless chili sauce topped with loose meat that you have to try. I've included a link to Carl's Chop House in Detroit across from one of the casinos you might want to try, also look up web site for restaurant called Detroit Soup Kitchen on Jefferson Ave. - Detroit- excellent and no it's not free. Last city of Berkley -also suburbs- has a large population of Indians and number of good Indian eateries if you like very spicy food. Feel free to email me if you have any questions as my b/f was born/raised here in area & I have lived here since 1980 plus not afraid to cross 8 mile rd. for a nite of fun and an excellent meal & still in one piece after all these years. http://www.carlschophouse.com/ |
