So, it's actually Hawaii that's preventing commercial avocado farmers
from sending them out of state? I don't understand how California's
ban can have an influence other states, especially those with real
winters.

Same here. To date, they've been $.50 each all winter so far, both at
Wal-mart and HEB. They generally come in from Mexico.

You don't understand... She's TOO skinny all summer! She's anything but
chubby now. I can still feel her ribs. ;-) Jewel's is looking good
right now and is anything but obese. I mis-spoke when I commented on her
being "fatter".

Sorry.

I have a full fenced yard and Jewely exercises herself, all day, every
day. During the summer to excess. I almost got in trouble with the
local shelter people for having a dog that was too skinny, even tho' she
has 24/7 free access to kibbles.

We UPPED her canned food ration to put more weight on her and even then,
it's been hard to keep her from looking like a greyhound.

Border collies are hyper.

The only dog I have an obesity problem with (we have 3 dogs) is the
corgie. I've tried to get dad to STOP feeding her canned food at night,
but he won't listen. :-( I need to take her to my Chiropractor and get
her back checked.

you probably know more about this than me, but there are lots of
restrictions on bringing fruit to california, not just avocados. the
medfly issue is no joke:

Agreed Blake, the Mediterranean fruit fly is no joke but seriously we
believe that the ban it is mainly to protect the avocado industry of
CA. Calvado is a very wealthy PAC. They are afraid that if that ban
was lifted, we would flood the mainland with our superior avocados.

From Wikipidea ...." Under heavy pressure from the state's
agricultural industry, which believed that billions of dollars' worth
of crops were..."

The Med fly does not go after avocados- according to my SO who has a
deep interests in ag and in bugs. Here in Hawaii the med fly does not
let us grow tomatoes but we do have avocados!

Washing fruits in hot soapy water kills fruit fly eggs. Dad is a banana
freak. Loves the things. We had a constant fruit fly problem until I
read HERE on this list about simply washing the fruits well as soon as
they came into the house since the eggs were usually ON the bananas.

I've had very few fruit flies in the house ever since. ;-) I'm pleased.

Changing the fruit processing procedures to include hot soapy water
would probably solve everybody's fruit fly problem.

The Mediterranean fruit fly is a field problem, not a house problem.
You don't have them in Texas.

Ok, but regular fruit flies are a pain in the ass if they are in the
house.

pressure by 'domestic' producers does play a big role. but california was,
i think, hit pretty hard by the medflies at one time.

didn't they once check motorists at the state for fruit?

They still do. In addition, they have Border Patrol checking for
illegals at various points.

That's funny, Blake.

If you want to bring illegal drugs or weapons into California from
another state, well, I guess they figure that if you got it into the
other state, it's not their problem. But if you try to bring in fruits
or vegetables, you will be stopped and checked, pretty much every time.
The whole damn freeway comes to a halt, inside a covered area, where
somebody who's whole job is this, has a talk with you. They will check
your trunk and your coolers, and ask where you got stuff. I've never
had anything confiscated, but lots of people have.

there - drugs and guns you can get anywhere.
