I used to get several calls a week where a telemarketer firm would call and
their computer would put me on hold while it looked for an available staff.
Sometimes they would hang up after about 10 seconds, but when a person
finally came on line I would keep them waiting.... and depending on how
many hang-ups I had had in the previous few days I would give them a blast
for them hanging up on me. BTW... according to my call display it was the
same number calling.

It sounds very pretty but the devil to keep free of dirt, leaves, etc.
between the rocks, and impossible to shovel snow off.

The US do not call list has the same exemptions. However it has a
requirement that you can ask a business to call you only for non
marketing purposes. Its been at least a few years since the do not call
list started and solicitation calls have dropped from 3/night to next to
maybe 3/year.

Hm, no, and it'd be more bio-friendly.
Vinegar by the gallon is cheap too.

I'll give that a try and report back. Thanks!

I'm just sick of messing with weeds. They are very difficult to remove
from a gravel driveway.

I'm going to try the vinegar thing mentioned in another post.
It's cheaper than roundup anyway.

I understand totally, but sometimes I bow to the inevitable.

The people I REALLY care about talking to get to have my cellphone
number.

Not even all of my co-workers get that. ;-) Just my boss and the
assistant lead. She's good about sending me e-mails if it's something
important.

It's a pre-paid Tracfone, so it really does matter.

My friends will talk to my answering machine to see if I am there. ;-)
They know I use it to screen home calls. If I don't pick up, then they
call my cell.

I don't have the voice mail set up, but the phone itself records missed
calls so I don't need it if I don't have the cell on me at the time. I
don't take it out to the kitchen or yard all the time, but the main line
is in the kitchen and I DO pick up if I am out there.

I do not hesitate to hang up on telemarketers any more.

I return missed calls when I check my cell phone. I check it more often
than the machine...

My sister in law uses her answering machine to screen calls. I have been
there when her son and daughters and other friends have called and asked
her to pick up, but she doesn't. Whenever we used to call her we got the
machine. So I don't call. I am not going to waste a long distance call just
to get the machine.

My boss tried to get my cell phone number. I wouldn't give it to him. All
the calls and air time would be long distance and at my expense I figured
if he needed to get hold of me for business he could get me a cell phone.
He got them for some of my co workers, and there was one in the vehicle I
drove most of the time. It could have been exchanged for a portable one.
The down side was that he would have been able to get hold of me on coffee
and lunch breaks like my co-workers.

My boss is one of the few that get my cell number.

But. he is not one to abuse it. So far, he has not called me on it.

He calls me at work when I am there, or shows up, or asks me to stay
late. Or he goes thru the assistant boss and she e-mails me. I'm very
responsive to e-mails.

I have a good boss.
For once, he's not an ass hole. :-)

A bit demanding, but that pressure comes from above.

Gimme that old time religion
Gimme that old time religion
Gimme that old time religion
It's good enough for me

It was good enough for Loki
It was good enough for Loki
He thinks Thor is kind of hokey
But it's good enough for me!

I will _NOT_ type in the other 300,000 verses. Google it and you'll

Give me that old solipsim,

It's good enough for me.

This is correct. The number of calls has decreased dramatically since
the introduction of the do not call registry in US. The telemarketing
and other calls from Unknown sources didn't completely stop though...
Use http://800notes.com/ and http://whocallsme.com/ to check who is
calling before answering an unknown call.

Ooh, I had one of those bogus "policeman's charity fund associations"
call me up. When I told the solicitor I wasn't interested in
contributing he basically threatened me... "Well, ma'am, you'd better
hope you never need to call a cop for help because we keep lists". I
laughed at him and hung up

I simply ask how "Bob" is doing because I haven't seen him for awhile.
They ask who "Bob" is and I say he is the police chief and thought you
were soliciting on their behalf. Then silence with a deer in headlights
expression if you could see it and then usually something like sorry and
then they hang up.

I called my local police after one of those calls to make sure it
wasn't them looking for money. Absolutely not, we do not solicit
via phone calls. Thank you.

As James said, many if not all of those phone charity solicitors
only donate pennies on the dollar to the actual charity. How this
is perfectly legal I don't understand, but it is.

I usually tell them to send the solicitation by mail and I will
consider it. They never do.
