(The frozen veggies we get here in RSA are not very nice, IMHO). My MW usually gets used for defrosting/heating up leftovers. I don't often use it to defrost uncooked meat - I prefer to do that in the fridge overnight, or sometimes even on the counter top if it's not gonna take too long. > When cooking meat, I usually use the oven (or toaster oven if it's > fish), not the stovetop. My MW is one of those combination MW/Convection/Grill things - I think they call the "grill" part a "broiler" in the USA? But even then I don't use it much for cooking. Also, it depends on the time of year - in summer we grill our meat outdoors most weekends too, and in winter I do make quite a lot of roasts/potroasts/casseroles in the oven. But I do use my stovetop for making most of my veggies and quite a lot of meats too. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy Garlic: the element without which life as we know it would be impossible |

Corn gets grilled, veggies become veggiebabs, and most of the time we have salads or other fresh raw produce. . I have not used the stove for vegetable sin months, and I cannot remember the last time I used the microwave. I would just as well get rid of it and reclaim some counter space. |

Very predictable so far with 90% using microwaves for re-heating. :-) It is what we use ours for the majority of the time, but I do occasionally cook veggies in it. I mostly steam those on the stove top tho' or stir fry. The only meat that really works in the m-wave is chicken. It tends to ruin the texture of mammal meat. > > > *Reminder:* > I have received a few more RFC Mugshots in the last week or so. > Please remember that you are welcome to send yours in too! > http://www.recfoodcooking.com/mug/ > -- > Cheers > Chatty Cathy -- Peace, Om Remove _ to validate e-mails. MCINL - I use them both about equally. It depends on the vegetable - I eat a lot of peas. I always "cook" frozen peas in the mw. If boiling potatoes it's on the stove. If baking potatoes it's usually in the oven (for actual baked potatoes to eat as such). For "baking" potatoes to use for home fries it's in the mw. I cook corn on the cob in the mw, as well as reheating canned corn. Other veggies are used to lesser extents and are probably done in the stove or in a slow-cooker as part of a stew or soup. 2. MCINL - I rarely do any kind of meat on top of the stove, even when it calls for browning in a skillet, I brown it in the oven as it is some much easier and way less messy. I never cook meat in the mw. 3. I do tons of reheating in the mw. I usually make a big batch of something that I eat every day for a week or 2 - a hearty soup or a stew. These get reheated in the mw. Also other things where I make up a plate of food I reheat in the mw. However, pizza can only be reheated in the oven or in the toaster oven. Pizza done in a mw really sucks!!!! There are a few things like that that I do in the oven or the toaster oven. I don't think I ever reheat anything on top of the stove - although perhaps if I had a big pot of soup and was serving it to company I would reheat on the stove as it would be too big a quantity to do in the mw. When I make a batch of deep fried chicken I do it outside on the turkey fryer. We're having weekend guests this weekend and I'll be doing about 50 pieces even though I'll only need about 10. I freeze them and nuke what I need just until thawed but not very hot. Then I put them in the toaster oven set at 500 for a few minutes and turn until the crust is crispy again. They're almost as good as the first time and light years ahead of any of the fast food crap that's been mentioned in other current threads. Lou |

I live alone and I certainly don't want to have to cook dinner from scratch when I get home from work. I wonder about the people who are always asking about things they can make for just one person, or 2 people. I wonder why they don't just make a big batch of something and eat it for several nights. Granted there are some things that are not as good reheated but there's tons of stuff out there that is even better reheated. And if they don't want to eat the same thing every night for a week or so, then they can make a couple of different things and freeze portions and switch off every night. I don't mind eating the same thing every night till it's gone. (Assuming it's good. Once in a while I make something that doesn't turn out too well - edible but not great, usually a new recipe I'm trying - and then I start to get a little sick of it before it's all gone, but that is rare.) Some things I make take 2-3 weeks to finish off, like my Brunswick Stew, for instance. It's a big recipe in the first place and I tend to add extra of everything (I don't measure) so I end up with twice as much as the recipe is supposed to make. That lasts me 3 weeks at least! ;-) Kate -- Kate Connally “If I were as old as I feel, I’d be dead already.” Goldfish: “The wholesome snack that smiles back, Until you bite their heads off.” What if the hokey pokey really *is* what it's all about? |
