Default Microwave popcorn

I see it's in the news again ... someone who doesn't work at
a microwave popcorn factory has come down with lung disease
from the fumes it generates because they made it so often
themselves at home.

Just in case there's any doubt that stuff is nasty.

Scary!

However, I'd also like to see a picture of the person who was popping the
stuff "several times a day", as mentioned in the article.

Just curious, is your implication that they are probably fat? The people
I worked with who just had to have that crap a couple times a day were
the thin ones. And they liked it burnt, just to make matters worse.

Well, yes, I was implying that. The article said the person popped the stuff
"several times a day". This *could* mean the person has issues involving
snacks. Lots of snacks.

Or, I could be reading too much into this. But, on a pretty regular basis
while grocery shopping, I see some tank whose shopping cart contains one
apple, a few boxes of Banquet fried chicken, and 20 different kinds of
starchy, greasy snacks, including MW popcorn.

I think it was at both CNN.com and Foxnews.com today.

I love the Pop Secret butter popcorn. But I only make it about once a
year, if that.

I still think the regular Act II is the best MW popcorn available. I've
tried various others (overhyped and priced typically) and found them to
not only not be better than Act II, they were notably worse. Even so, I
probably have a bag of MW popcorn every few months, if that.

Hmmm. I buy the plain microwave stuff and put a little melted butter
on it. It just tastes better than fake butter...

The flavor additive causing the trouble is diacetyl.
Diacetyl is the main natural flavor in butter,
and its discovery was the one of the critical
events in the development of margarine. Before
diacetyl was introduced as a flavor additive
to margarine, pure margarine was more like
Crisco -- flavorless fat. That's why the
early margarines were usually mixed with some
amount of real butter or milk -- to get some
of that buttery flavor.

But what about people who work in dairies or
bakeries? Some of these people would have high
workplace exposure to diacetyl from butter.
Someone ought to check whether these people
ever get bronchiolitis obliterans.

If they did, that would be a good reason to
ban butter! Imagine that! A world without
butter! I've probably eaten about four ounces
of butter in the last 30 years, so I wouldn't
miss it. The rest of you will have to suffer.
Bwahahahaha! :-)

I buy popping corn and cook it in a pot in a little bacon grease. And I,
being able to cook, can add anything I desire to it. I prefer to buy the
pop corn flavoring seasonings than make them from scratch....but even
just salt and butter is good that way. If you have a gas stove there
isn't much time difference in making a pot full on it than in nuking a
bag full. Hell even on my electric coil stove it doesn't take that long.

I feel that microwave pop corn was invented so people wouldn't have to
wash a pot,lid and a bowl.

But even bulk pop corn can be nuked...I've done it.

The plain bags still have space stuff. We have a simple microwave popper
and just add some popping corn and when it is finished just add
butter/whatever or not.

What could possibly motivate someone to eschew butter?

That microwave crap is full of transfats, and was never intended for
people who have a clue. Homemade popcorn is cheap and healthy, and it
doesn't take very much real butter to make it delicious. It's pretty
darned good just popped with peanut oil and popcorn salt.

It's mostly saturated fat. I go to great lengths
to avoid saturated fat. I mutilate my ribeye steaks
dissecting out all the veins of white fat. (Victor
was wrong when he said that couldn't be done.)

True, I eat some saturated fat that can't be
dissected out, and I eat bacon occasionally.
My greatest source of saturated fat is probably
cheese (which I always cut into very thin slices
using a vegetable peeler).

But I won't eat butter. No way. If I'm going
to eat saturated fat, I want the most flavor for
each calorie of fat. That means bacon, cheese,
or a mutilated ribeye, but certainly not butter.

I allow myself a certain number of fat calories,
and I spend them on only the best foods. I don't
squander them on butter, lard, Crisco, etc.

You need to find some good butter as good butter most certainly gives a
lot of flavor. As someone noted a while back (probably Sheldon), most
butter in the US has really gone downhill and while they may still call
it grade A/AA, it is nearly flavorless. The imported "European" butters
are vastly better than the current US stuff, and tastes like you
remember butter used to taste like.
