It works longer than 30 days, unless they have changed recently.

There is another way to get to the chat, and I accidentally did it
today. It was extraordinarily easy to get there.

Go to this website:
http://www.penguinpowered.ca/~vexorg...d.cooking.html

It should take you right there. A security warning will come up, and
click yes.

You will log in as Anonymous. To change your name, type /nick name,
with name being the name you want to be called. Then hit enter.
Example: /nick ChristineD.

Hope to see some of you there!

Christine, thank you! I gotta tell you, that was the absolutely first
chat room I've ever been in, and I've been online for a dozen years.
Never had the time to suss it out or the inclination to figure out
what chat room would be of interest. I don't have a lot of time to do
chat, but I'd love to visit again. You guys were great getting me
started and (corncob pipe in mouth) I *will* return*!

By the way, I see most people coming into the chat aren't sure how to
change their name.
I posted and told you all how to do it: I am not sure it was clear
enough.

Anyway, here it is again, with an example.
When you get to the chat room, you will be logged in as Anonymous to
start.
You can change your name this way-type /nick whatever name you want,
and hit the enter key. Just type it in right there where the cursor
is.
Example from my name: /nick ChrisD <enter>
My name will change to ChrisD, which it is, on the chat.

If this isn't clear, let me know...I will talk you through it on chat,
or someone will.

There are a bunch of us chatting now.

I'd like to see Damsel's face when she sees us all on there. Incidentally,
I was quite a regular when she first started the chatroom several years ago
but have drifted away for some time. It was fun to chat last night. I bet
we'll all be walking over each others' feet.

It was a good turnout. Boliver and I pretty much closed the chat. I had a
good time. A definite do-over.

I was only able to visit for a few moments (was just checking the
link and trying to recall the commands), but I'm remembering now
how much fun IRC can be. As Ahnuld would say, "I'll be back"...

I guess my old isp had an internal program that made it
waaay tooo easy for me to access irc, so when mIRC was
virtually the only Big Dog around - I got turned off to
internet relay chat (not meaning AIM/MSN chat).
Unfortunately, I never enjoyed using mIRC (on the occasions

complaining.

That part I know.

there are quite a few different networks that you can
connect to using client software.

I know there are differnt NETWORKS but I didn't know there
were different programs out there to access them with.

What do you suggest?

If I don't talk to someone in the next 10 minute, I'm still

You just use an IRC client. I run Linux here, and use tirc.

I enter:

tirc [ -n nickname ] [ -s server ]

at the commandline, and I'm there. This would be the Run command
or DOS prompt in Windoze.

If you were using tirc, you'd enter, to reach the right server:

tirc -n foodfan -s irc3.penguinpowered.ca

Then, when you were connected, you'd type

/join#rec.food.cooking

To get to the right channel/room.

You will probably be using a graphical program, but the
principles of operation will be the same.

You need to have a client installed and look at the manual
for it (called "help" on Windoze, I think).

If you still haven't got on line e-mail me with a valid e-mail adress. I
have 3 pictures that should get you into vexnet irc3.penguinpowered.ca.

I downloaded the evaluation copy of mIRC (I'll go with a
free program eventually, since Christine says there are many
to choose from).

So, what is the channel and which is the server? So far
this isn't idiot proof! I tried irc3.penguinpowered.ca as
server, but it gave me the same information as it did when I
entered vexnet as server... obviously no one was online at
the time.

I downloaded mIRC last night. I've used mIRC at
various times over the years and always deleted it
eventually as I could only stand so much
infantile cybersex before I'm maxed out(LOL)....
seriously though- vexnet was not one of the
servers listed and I couldn't get it all added
correctly. I can't figure out what to do next to
find the RFC chat? Any one with suggestions?

Vexnet is the name of the group of servers. Somewhat like usenet is a group
of newsgroups. And irc3.penguinpowered.ca is kinda like the news server.
Once connected to irc3.penguinpowered.ca. The command
required is "/Join #Rec.Food.Cooking". Make note of the / and the #
the / is used at the start of a line to indicate the start of a command.
The # is used to indicate the start of a Channel name. The periods in
#Rec.Food.Cooking are only required for spelling reasons.

If irc3.penguinpowered.ca doesn't connect after say 6 or 7 tries, Try to
irc5.penguinpowered.ca.

There are a host of other commands some nice to know. Like the /Nick
command. The Syntax for the /Nick command is /Nick nickname. Where nickname
is the handle you want to represent you. like the /List command. Before
connecting to any IRC network and channel I suggest you read up on the
commands and your IRC client. mIRC has many shortcuts you can
immplement...look-up aliases and popups in the help feature and get
familiar with a script editor.

Another feature is If you type "irc://irc3.penguinpowered.ca" into windows
browser you are taken to the connect screen of mIRC.
