Default McD's employee jailed - for over-salty burger...

Jailed - for over-salty burger
09/09/2007 22:01 - (SA)

Union City, Georgia - A McDonald's employee spent a night in jail and is
facing criminal charges because a police officer's burger was too salty
- so salty that he says it made him sick.

Kendra Bull was arrested on Friday, charged with misdemeanour reckless
conduct and freed on $1 000 bail.

Bull, 20, said she accidentally spilled salt on hamburger meat and told
her supervisor and a co-worker, who "tried to thump the salt off".

On her break, she ate a burger made with the salty meat. "It didn't make
me sick," Bull told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But then Police Officer Wendell Adams got a burger made with the
oversalted meat, and he returned a short time later and told the manager
it made him sick.

Bull admitted spilling salt on the meat, and Adams took her outside and
questioned her, she said.

"If it was too salty, why did (Adams) not take one bite and throw it
away?" said Bull, who has worked at the restaurant for five months. She
said she did not know a police officer got one of the salty burgers
because she could not see the drive-through window from her work area.

Police sent samples of the burger to the state crime lab for tests.

City public information officer George Louth said Bull was charged
because she served the burger "without regards to the well-being of
anyone who might consume it".

"If it was too salty, why did (Adams) not take one bite and throw it away?"

Or take one bite, drive back, park and take it inside to complain? WTF
happened to common sense? This person will probably file yet another
frivilous lawsuit.

What gets me about this is the article says, "Bull, 20, said she
accidentally spilled salt on hamburger meat and *told her supervisor* and a
co-worker, who "tried to thump the salt off"." Why didn't they chuck the
meat, write it up as a loss and start over??

If this turns out to be an intentional act, then my position will change.
Based on what is written here, all of the employees should be reprimanded
and possibly fired for serving food that they *knew* was
tainted.......however....the bigger situation IMHO is good 'ol Barney Fife.
Andy not only needs to take his bullet away, but that officer shouldn't take
on a PD role any more intellectually strenuous than a meter maid! I do NOT
want that guy coming to my rescue in a serious situation that might require
logic and reasoning :-)

If it was fresh burger I made at home, I would have just rinsed it under the
tap.

Yes, but it wasn't. It was an entire batch of meat for burgers. Should
have been tossed once the employee notified her supervisor. They're going
to let her take the fall for this???

Maybe she can counter-sue.

The manager knew about the error and should have made the decision to
toss the ruined meat at that point.

I know I would have!

Or mixed it in with more fresh meat to dilute it out.

I think that just by walking into McD, you agree to some unwritten EULA and
have no rights other than free napkins, packets of salt and pepper, etc.

Tainted with spilled salt. Reprimanded, yes. She told her supervisor.
They let the meat be used anyway. It's the supervisor's fault, IMHO, for
not making the decision to toss the meat and start over. Of course, the
supervisor is probably 16.

Gotta agree with you on that one! You don't *arrest* someone for spilling
salt on hamburger meat. You sure as hell don't send a sample off to the
state crime lab. The guys in the lab are probably laughing their asses off
at good ol' Barney.

Umm...well, not really, Jill. The cop was dumb to keep eating the food, but
he was absolutely correct to be concerned.

I so rarely eat McD's, it kinda does not matter.
The last couple of times I did, it was for McNuggets.

Their burgers are not worth eating. BK's is too nearby.

I agree....the Mgr screwed up royally.

Just as an aside.....Uh if this indeed happened at a McD's, then there would
be no fresh meat with which to mix and no "batch" to begin with at all. McD
patties enter the store as a partially cooked, pre-formed individually quick
frozen patty. Come to think of it...I'm not actually sure that there are
even any items that would be salted at the grill either, so it makes one
wonder how they accidentally spilled salt on the meat to begin with.......

Allowing McD employees to handle bulk ground beef - can you imagine? We'd
need a morgue next to every McD to handle the victims.

Maybe it's got something to do with their not knowing if they're going to
get a typical boring citizen or some asshole with a gun when they do a
traffic stop, or handle a domestic dispute.

Default McD's employee jailed - for over-salty burger...

Doesn't McD use salt packets ?
I tnought they used frozen meat, why would they use salt in a box ?
I don't think they mix meat on the premises, I may be wrong but

The only meal I have eaten at McD's in the past 25 years, is breakfast.
There are too many good burger places to choose from.

I guess we really are a society that throws absolutely everyone in jail.
Too much salt, yet the cop ate almost the whole thing. "It was so
repulsive, your honor, I damn near stopped eating it - TWICE!"

And now this young woman will have a police record and on every job app she
fills out will have to check "yes" when it asks if you have ever been
arrested for any reason.

Sounds like justice to me.

When I read Chatty Cathy's posting, I immediately thought this has to be
a hoax. Sure enough, it is a hoax. Folks this story is a work of fiction.

Uh...where does it say it's a hoax?

Snopes includes the article on a page listing recent news articles and web
sites that may be of interest to its readers, but near the top of the page
it says, "Stories are chosen for inclusion here purely on the basis of their
appeal to our readers; we make no claims about the reliability of
information linked from this page."

CNN.com even has a link to the article from its home page:
http://www.cbs46.com/news/14078071/detail.html. Doesn't look like a hoax to
me.

Default McD's employee jailed - for over-salty burger...

I'm coming late to this thread and have some questions.

How could the officer tell the burger was too salty? A Big Mac has 1090
mg of sodium to start. Complaining about added salt to a Big Mac is
like complaining about extra fat in bacon or too much sugar in soda. Or
complaining that they put water in that bottle of water.

What sort of illness did the officer suffer? Wouldn't too much salt
just make the average person thirsty? If blood pressure is at issue, he
wouldn't have been eating the burger in the first place. And he
certainly wouldn't have had time to ask the questions and make the
arrest before getting checked out in the hospital.

Reckless conduct? Can police officers be brought before a disciplinary
board for abuse of power? Or sued for wrongful arrest? I can
understand a complaint. I wish even fast food workers (includes the
supervisor) would do a better job too, but how do you get reckless
conduct out of that?

The article was so unbelievable that I checked Snopes. They have a link
to it as an oddity, but true.

And I don't understand this statement: "She said she didn't know a police
officer got one of the salty burgers because she couldn't see the
drive-through window from her work area." WTF difference does it make if he
was a police officer or not? We're all consumers. I guarantee a lot of
other people got overly salted burgers. They didn't make citizens arrests!
What right did he have to take her outside and question her about an obvious
mistake? One that she *reported to her supervisor*? This is a gross misuse
of his authority. She went to jail over a salty hamburger? The more I
think about this the more angry I become.

Considering the number of incidents in which cops have been served tainted
food, I think the cop was right to be immediately suspicious. Arrest...not
so sure, but he had every reason to raise hell.

Because the police are often intentional targets for morons in the kitchen.
This particular cop was lucky it was just salt. That's not always the case.

I think if the media says it's a McD's then it's a McD's. The media may
be pathetic, but I don't think they're quite that pathetic... yet...

I would imagine that the victim, er, employee could very well had been
carrying the salt shaker to the fry holding / salting area after filling
it and tripped or had the top fall off and spill in an open box of
frozen patties.

At any rate, I expect the victim here, i.e. the McD's employee has a
very good case to sue for false arrest.

Since when does over seasoned equate with tainted?

No way to answer that question without making a scene. The cop was right. If
he hadn't walked heavy on the situation, the evidence would've been gone.
There have been incidents where cops were intentionally given food
containing stuff like drain cleaner.

Unless there really was some intentional contamination and with
something other than salt, the victim - the McD's employee will not have
any criminal record, probably will have some college funding and the
criminal - the cop, will be in deep do-do.

I also was in error. I think this story is actually true, but I suspect
the case will be thrown out of court and the woman acquitted. At least,
I hope that's the way this story turns out.

I stand corrected.

If the cop was suspicious, why did he eat nearly the entire sandwich
before taking action? This story may well be true, but it makes no sense.

That's also stupid, but not surprising. My town's police force has a
complete moron working for it, but they keep him around anyway.

Reminds me of a fake community service ad that ran for about a week at a
radio station in Long Island: "Are you big, strong & stupid? The Nassau
County Police Department would like to invite you to an upcoming career
fair...."

We are talking about McDonalds. The hamburgers, McDonalds sells are not
made on the premises, they are stamped out on a machine, deep frozen,
then shipped to each restaurant.

And the fact that they are just like the rest of us, human. I wouldn't be
surprised if some of them like Miracle Whip.

Sorry, the correct procedure would have been to contact his supervisor
and have them send another unit to investigate, and for him to go the
nearest hospital for evaluation as soon they had arrived.

His actions clearly show that he was not legitimately concerned for his
safety and instead chose to abuse his position and falsely arrest an
innocent McD's employee.

All the while ignoring the obvious: a McDonald's employee was charged
with serving a burger "without regards to the well-being of anyone who
might consume it". Is there an emergency number for the Irony Police?
