Default strawberry bruschetta - tweaks needed

After watching this deliciousness unfold on the Food Network, I had to
give it a try:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/reci...ml?rsrc=search

My at-home experiment didn't work very well. I figure it might have
something to do with some of my shortcuts, and I'd love input on how
to make it come out right.

I bought some bread which wasn't as crusty as the recipe one, and the
slices were thinner. (I had the bakery slice it for me.) I toasted the
bread in the toaster instead of in a pan. Other than that I followed
the instructions.

What ended up happening was that the bread would burn in the corners
before the sugar would get caramelized and crunchy on top. I'm
wondering if my rack was too close to the broiler.

Thoughts on what I did wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Jen

Maybe it was the "shortcuts" fault... or maybe it was you.

Yep. Forget the shortcuts. Nice thick slices, and not too close to
the grill (broil) elements.
