Are you kidding, with six cats I was lucky to get some... they can eat faster than I can slice... I think they ate more than half. My cauliflower and cabbage were small this year but still very good. But my first attempt at growing celery surprised me, what a difference from store bought, a rich aroma, remarkable flavor, and it's the crunchiest! And I have five more still in the ground. Now I need to perfect my celery growing, I need to plant them much closer together, I found out that they grow more compact if they touch and they will also self blanch... the one necessity however is a long growing season (5 months) and plenty of water. I think anyone can grow celery, needs very little space, a square foot will easily grow four bunches. So now we know what to plant in that wet spot. You'd think after that nice dinner I shouldn't be hungry, but I'm starving. Why, because I get my flu shot tomorrow and at the same time I'll get my yearly routine fasting blood test, no eating/drinking from 9PM. Sheldon Eieio |

Geez, my cat just stares until I share a teensy taste of my pot roast. Or turkey. > My cauliflower and cabbage were small this year but still very good. I guess that's what I read, that celery has a long growing season. Interesting about growing them close together. > You'd think after that nice dinner I shouldn't be hungry, but I'm > starving. I usually don't freeze tender steak but this was one of those I mentioned a while ago that were too good a price to forego. |

Decent porterhouse here abouts is typically $9-$10lb, so I thought these a bargain. > MLK said, "I've been to the mountain." > I can tell you that, like Sheldon, I've been to the Crystal Palace. I can't see the point in name dropping top shelf booze when I'm gonna use it to spike a blend of Fresca and orange soda. |

But, the Italian woman across the street made a face when I offered tomatoes. Said she hates them. Offered basil, and she asked what you're supposed to use it for. House to the right: While devouring some snow peas back in June, her son asked "Are these vegetables?" His parents seem to eat nothing but meat and bread, and have politely refused offers of lettuce & various other things. The kids still come over, though, to self-medicate. :-) |

I guess just saying No thanks wasn't an option. I wish my neighbors would offer me tomatoes, no one has vegetable gardens, though. I didn't grow tomatoes this year, far too busy last spring. Next year. And I'm planting that lettuce leaf basil people talked about, too. nancy |

It reminded me of some Tops stores here in Rochester, best described by my son and a friend of his when they were 15. Tops used to have an ad jingle that went something like "Tops never stops...giving you more". Occasionally, I'd end up at a Tops with the kid and his friend, and at the time, it was their job to shock adults, smell bad and laugh at pretty much anything. In the store, they'd follow me around, singing "Tops never mops...look at the floor!" It was true. :-) |

And I have five more still in the ground. I'm sure you've read this before and your other celery is still in the ground but I'll post it again for anyone who might not know and it be useful to them- Wrapping heads of celery in aluminum foil and storing in the fridge has kept my celery crisp a lot longer than in the past when I just kept in the plastic bag it comes in when purchased at the market. Cauliflower was $3.00 at one market I went to yesterday. It was a lovely head but a trifle small so I opted for the convenience of frozen instead. |

You CAN'T tell the diff, that's why for home use I buy the very cheapest vodka I can, one of my faves is the big plastic 1.75 litre bottle at a local stupormarket chain, the label simply sez "Vodka", suits me fine for $9.99...I like Fresca or Diet 7 - Up and a splash of OJ with mine. If I have guests I'll cave and get Smirnoff...which in a _New York Times_ taste test a few years beat out all the foofier brands... When I'm out I drink vodka rocks, so I order a premium brand and there IS a taste difference. Still, I laff at the dummies who order an Absolut or Stoly Bloody Mary or whatever mixed drink, the well vodka will do just fine for a mixed drink... > Now, myself, on the other hand - I prefer Scotch.
