What is your favorite brand of coffee and why do you like it? While I
have always like Maxwell House, I have been exploring other coffees and recently ordered some from Cafe Du Monde. Anyone ever have it? I've also had Gevelia, and it's not bad, but sort of expensive. I plan on trying Starbucks soon. And you? Mark Ferrante |

i find regular starbucks too strong, HOWEVER, it does make a "mean cup

Starbucks, IMO, is overrated. Cafe du Monde? Is that coffee with chicory? My fiance brings me some sort of coffee at times on his trips back from Lousiana... let me think... oh! it's Community coffee with chicory. Historical note: chickory was added during the American Civil War to stretch, if not replace, the coffee reserves. Ditto in WWII. In fact, it was often brewed by itself as faux coffee. Jill |

My family likes Arvid Nordquist mellanrost, which a friend from Sweden introduced to us as a better alternative to Gevalia. It is expensive in the U.S. but ~$3 a half kilo (about a pound) in Sweden. We like it because it is flavorful and smooth, not harsh or bitter. gloria p |

It's similar to Cafe du Monde, but stronger I think (which is to my liking). Three scoops is stronger than a full load of espresso to me (so it comes out being cheaper per pound than using more of the less expensive types/brands). Luckily, many of the grocers in our area have started carrying it (we were having it shipped in prior). |

What I do prefer is Chock Full 'O Nuts French Roast coffee. An internet seller in CA. sells it to me. Full, rich flavor, but not burnt. Consumer Reports has done two studies on French Roast. Each time it came up first. Company used to be a New York Company, but recently bought out by Sara Lee, which hasn't ruined it yet. http://www.easycoffee.com/ "Chock Full 'O Nuts is the heavenly coffee........." -- Alan "If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home." --James Michener |

... > What is your favorite brand of coffee and why > do you like it? Before I moved to Denmark, I really liked Trader Joe's Bay Blend. Unfortunately (or maybe not, distance-wise), it tastes horrible here -- difference in the water, I suppose (I imagine it's the same reason water filtered with my Brita also tastes awful). I'd found a few coffees here in Copenhagen which were okay, but nothing that really flipped my switch. We were in Stockholm one day two years ago and, when checking out the market (as we always do when we travel), found a coffee that we both really like, Mocca Sanani from Himalaya Te & Kaffespecialist at Hötorgshallen (telephone 08/21 88 70). Lucky for me (even if I don't get to go), my husband is in Stockholm not infrequently. ![]() -j |

> What is your favorite brand of coffee and why do you like it? My wife for some reason loves Chock Full Of Nuts (yuck). I prefer Maxwell House French Roast when buying ground coffee. When buying beans to grind myself, I have always liked chocolate raspberry truffle, brewed and then served with half-n-half. I've also found a few blends at the local Whole Foods Market that are very tastey: Black Onyx and Bed-n-Breakfast. I've been drinking them the past few months. (later addition) I noticed, while reading the rest of the thread, that there are alot of people who are talking Chock Full O'Nuts up. ![]() "Sheryl Rosen" > wrote in message ... | | What exactly does chicory do for coffee? I've heard many reasons it was added - was told it cut the bitterness of cheap/less-than-great roasts, stretched the coffee so you would get more from less beans (by adding in cheap grass), and that it is a flavor booster to just plain coffee. Our Brit neighbors were surprised to find us drinking a coffee cut with chicory (she did during WWII only because that was how it was sold). Take a look at http://www.frenchmarketcoffee.com/chicory.html for another explanation. It sounds like chicory lowers cholesterol, lowers blood sugar, lowers your weight, cures diabetes, and the common cold ;-) Aside from the marketing hype, the French Market brand (and to some extent, the Louzianne brand - just not as good/rich tasting as FM) is rather strong coffee (we use three heaping measures to 12 cups drip) and more to my liking than any other coffee I've tasted. I've traveled all over the world and loved the strong coffees of Venezuela and Argentina (two places I thought it was the strongest), learned the hard way in Istanbul it really isn't 'good to the last drop', and on a flight from Manila to Dubai that rich and dark do not apply to all types of coffee. If you are brave enough to try it, give it at least 3 tries before giving it up. It is sort of acquired I think (I used to like weaker coffees like Maxwell House or Folgers, but got stuck in South America for a couple months and came back needing the strong stuff). Because you use much less of FM than you would of Folgers, it really comes out costing less for me. |

In the United States, early endive is sometimes erroneously called chicory. Chicory is available year-round. Choose leaves that are brightly colored and crisp. Store unwashed greens in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Today's trendy RADICCHIO is a red-leafed Italian chicory. Roasted chicory (also called succory ) comes from the roasted, ground roots of some varieties of chicory. It's used as a coffee substitute, and added to some coffees for body and aroma and as an "extender." This coffee-chicory blend is often referred to as "New Orleans" or "Creole" coffee and is a popular beverage in Louisiana. © Copyright Barron's Educational Services, Inc. 1995 based on THE FOOD LOVER'S COMPANION, 2nd edition, by Sharon Tyler Herbst. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |
