Default Favorite brand of coffee?

What is your favorite brand of coffee and why do you like it? While I
have always like Maxwell House, I have been exploring other coffees
and recently ordered some from Cafe Du Monde. Anyone ever have it?
I've also had Gevelia, and it's not bad, but sort of expensive. I
plan on trying Starbucks soon.

And you?

I like the many blends Gevalia offers but I had to stop ordering it because
I don't drink all that much coffee. Starbucks, IMO, is overrated. Cafe du
Monde? Is that coffee with chicory? My fiance brings me some sort of
coffee at times on his trips back from Lousiana... let me think... oh! it's
Community coffee with chicory. Historical note: chickory was added during
the American Civil War to stretch, if not replace, the coffee reserves.
Ditto in WWII. In fact, it was often brewed by itself as faux coffee.

Starbucks is basically like Pizza Hut. Not too bad if it is your only
choice, but anybody who has a quality pizza shop in the neighborhood
wouldn't think of going there.

Fairtrade. It tastes good and the growers are paid fair prices for
their produce.

Fairtrade is not a brand, but a program. Everything else you said is
correct. In general, fairtrade coffee is fairly good. Not the finest,
but fairly good.

Yep. But it comes from a bunch of different sources. It is a
certification, like "Organic".

Just as a point of interest, Fairtrade guarantees the farmers a minimum
price per pound, but farmers get greatly in excess of the Fairtrade price
for truly superior coffee at auction. So while Fairtrade offers a very
good program for farmers, they can do even better by improving their
quality to the point where they produce truly superior coffee.

But the wanky coffee yields a better price to the farmer than Fairtrade.
One rfc poster gets $16.00/lb. for her truly wonderful coffee, while
Fairtrade pays farmers less than $2.00/lb.

Check out the Kenya auction price results. They are available online.
Panama auction prices are available as well. Wanky coffee routinely sells
for multiples of Fairtrade price.

And not that you are at all interested, but coffee lasts for a year or
more in its green state, and tastes best around 24 hours after roasting.

Ours says where it came from, generally.

The Fair Trade demarcation is not available for farmers in the US,
such as we Kona farmers. When you live in the US as we do in Hawaii,
it is assumed correctly that we pay taxes, pay our laborers a fair and
equitable wage, we also follow all US Department of Agriculture rules-
which means that Kona Coffee has never been touched by pesticides
which is not necessarily true of other coffees etc. We also want
Health insurance and the regular middle class America stuff.

I agree with EskWIRED. Fair Trade is not the be-all or end-all
although it is a beginning.

Out to pick coffee all day again.

And if all you got for your coffee was the fair-trade price, you'd be

I never said it was the be-all and end-all. It's just the way I choose
to buy coffee most of the time.

I don't like Starbucks, it always tastes burnt to me.

My family likes Arvid Nordquist mellanrost, which
a friend from Sweden introduced to us as a better
alternative to Gevalia. It is expensive in the U.S.
but ~$3 a half kilo (about a pound) in Sweden. We
like it because it is flavorful and smooth, not
harsh or bitter.

Maybe, but Cea and Bob grow excellent coffee.

What she failed to mention, however, is that it needs to be properly
roasted and consumed fresh.

I roasted some of their peaberry just last week. Yum!

Eight O'Clock Bean. Until recently, it was unavailable in Amarillo, and I
relied on my Michigan daughter to keep me supplied.

I checked out their website, but their prices were outrageously high,
compared to the store price.

Community Coffee. I use a blend of Dark Roast and Cafe Especial, with
Ghirardelli Cocoa mixed in.

A distant second is Chock Full O'Nuts.

Montecristo brand for me. They have some outstanding African coffee blends
as well as a find Cuban blend. They also package estate grown Blue Mountain
beans.

For daily brew I like Chock Full of Nuts.

Coffee beans after roasting have a 2 week max shelf life in whole bean
format-ground it is only a matter of hours or some say minutes before
the varietal flavors have left. So if you want to experience real
coffee, find a roaster that rotates their beans. These people are
around if you will just look. Also a few roasters are bottom feeders
over roasting cheap crap beans and selling roast. We call one of the
big chains charbucks cause they can not possibly sell fresh roasted-so
they way overroast their coffee and are offering roast flavors and not
varietal flavors. But at least they start with high quality beans not
like the big bulk can guys who are peddling steam treated (without the
steam treatment these beans taste like truck tires)Vietnamese sourced
robusta beans.

Now if you really want great coffee-roast your own beans. If
interested go to alt coffee-having a great cup of Ethopian Harrar
Horse just roasted into the beginning of the second crack. Lots of
sources of green beans and if you are a bit handy, can make your own
roaster for not a lot of money. Our ancestors used to roast their own
beans.

Be careful with that! Once you roast your own - you can't go
back to "store bought crap"!! Rick and I have been roasting our
own lately and the difference is ASTOUNDING!!

There is one store bought that I still really like. I just
discovered it during a trip to Chicago... Trader Joe's has a
coffee that has Pinon nut (Pine nuts) from New Mexico in it.
WOW!! I wasn't going to tell anyone about it for fear that
everyone would buy all of it and make the price go up... but
since I live far enough from a Trader Joe's ... I guess it won't
matter if I only tell you guys.

I am almost hesitant to ask this, but where's a good place to order
green beans from?

I'm not a coffee connoisseur, Eight O'Clock Bean Coffee is my
preference, but lately I'm in the mood to try my hand at roasting my
own.

www.sweetmarias.com is a good place to start.

Default Favorite brand of coffee?

We love coffee, but are limited to decaf.

Bustelo, a very mellow espresso, makes a decaf.

We drink French Market brand (coffee/chicory blend in the red can - they
have several blends). It's similar to Cafe du Monde, but stronger I think
(which is to my liking). Three scoops is stronger than a full load of
espresso to me (so it comes out being cheaper per pound than using more of
the less expensive types/brands). Luckily, many of the grocers in our area
have started carrying it (we were having it shipped in prior).
