Default Cookbooks at the supermarket!??

At the back aisle of the supermarket was a small four sided square display in
the middle of the aisle full of Food TV cookbooks. First I've ever seen of
cookbooks for sale at a supermarket. I think there must be a new hire at the
Food TV Network!

I didn't look at them but at a glance recognized Puck, Ray and Sandra Lee's
books.

New to me!!!

There's a new commercial (to me) where she and Guy Fieri show up in
some poor guy's backyard to "help" him with his grilling. She's been
filmed through a good 4 layers of gauze, at least.

I bought Elizabeth David's _An Omelet and a Glass of Wine_ at my local
Kroger.

Cookbooks are the least of it. My brother bought a cast iron framed (with
very pretty dark cotta tile inserts) square table with a fire pit in the
middle and matching comfy chairs at Kroger. You can get all sorts of things
at grocery stores these days. They have to compete with the big box stores
that didn't used to sell food.

We have a store here called Central Market. They have a nice selection of
cookbooks. Also nice kitchen gadgets and on occasion, things like Polish
pottery. They also have a sushi bar and sell cute little Japanese dishes.

They are not your typical supermarket though. They are very upscale and
probably not the place you'd go to do the bulk of your food shopping.
Unless you have food allergies like we do. They cater to people like us!

I've seen computers and window unit air conditioners for sale at the
supermarket.

Our supermarkets, even the smaller ones, sell coolers, lawn furniture,
toys (at Christmas), t-shirts, hats, gloves, etc., and the newest
thing? (Illinois and Iowa try-out - don't know about the other
states) The newest thing is health clinics! Don't get me started!
There is a PA or RN on duty at all times to take blood pressures,
prescribe minor ailment prescriptions, do diagnoses, etc. Just what I
want - go shopping for food and have all kinds of sick people hanging
around the food supply! It's just ridiculous.

Nancy2,

LOL! Unfortunately lots of customers shopping have ailments too.

Many supermarkets (not wholesale clubs or megamarts) here have "micro" banks
in a front section of the store. I'm undecided about it's convenience but I
suppose there's nothing wrong with it if only my bank would open a branch in
one!

Oh, pshaw, ;-) banks have been in supermarkets around here forever.
Just last week, "Bank of the West" went out and a semi-local credit
union came in.

Our Central Market (in Shoreline, WA, just north of Seattle) has a small
cookbook section, along with some housewares. This Central Market is
similar to Wegman's (for you east coasters) in that it's huge, with a
food court, sushi bar, and massive produce section. The Uwajimaya (the
Asian equivalent of Wegman's) chain has lots of housewares. Friends of
mine from Boston were in town over the summer and never imagined the
variety of rice cookers that Uwajimaya has. The flagship Uwajimaya in
Seattle has a separate Asian bookstore with a good selection of
cookbooks.

Lordy, how I miss Uwajimaya. I bought the only apron I've ever liked in my
life there close to 20 years ago. I've searched all over, found a used one
on ebay, and it was the brand that U. sold, but it was the one for children.
I was in touch with them about the apron, but was unsuccessful.

Most everything I bought there has gone by the wayside over the years, but
it was such a fun place to go.

I did a double-take, thinking "Fashion Island" in Newport Beach, CA? Almost
slipped one past me! But Fashion Island is 100% commercial and hardly
resembles an island.

But I did live in Corona del Mar for a year in 1968 so Newport Beach is not
at all unknown to me. This was in during living in San Diego 1964-1970.
Relatives living in San Diego at the time -- all not living now. Times do
change.
