My current garlic press is about ready to be replaced. What do you
recommend I get to replace it? Yeah, I know that it's easy to mince up garlic with a knife, but I like using a garlic press. Anny |

My longest-lived garlic press to date is some nameless piece of cast aluminum that I probably picked up at the grocery store. I buy the big jug of peeled fresh cloves of garlic at Costco and store them in the freezer for use as needed. I get out as many cloves as I need about 5 minutes in advance of pressing. At that point they're nice and soft and easy to squish. There may or may not be a noticeable flavor difference between fresh and frozen garlic; I myself have never noticed it. And the jumbo jugs of peeled cloves certainly encourage experiments like making large batches of roasted garlic to spread on bread. |

It was stainless steel construction. Could crush several cloves at a time. It didn't require a separate thing to poke through the holes to "clean it", you just flipped it around to the other side and it had built-in spikes to poke out the uncrushed garlic. Then you just washed the press. There was no need for an expensive gadget and yes, they are handy ![]() Jill |

I second that, last Christmas i was given a Zyliss and compared to my old one its so much easier to use, better design, ergonomically? my old press required a great deal of effort to squeeze, the new Zyliss don't. Plus it has a bigger container for the garlic. >>Yeah, I know that it's easy to mince up garlic with a knife, but I like >>using a garlic press. Me to, i like to put raw crushed garlic in just drained pasta and toss it, and in a green salad, better than wiping the bowl with a cut clove, but im a garlicophyle, i loves me garlic. -- JL >> >>Anny > > > --Bryan > |

Either it's cast or it's formed of bent steel, usually stainless. I have never had a cast one last. No matter who makes it, a cast one will break at the stress point at the basket. My last one was Calphalon, cast, and lasted a couple months. Oxo is also cast. My present one is is Cuisinart and is formed and is about two years old and has never given me any trouble. Raymond |

One type of press that I woulld avoid is plastic. I tried one once and it was hard to clean and snapped apart easily. The one I have right now has a removable basket to put the garlic into -- it's easy to clean but doesn't fit together well. The press is too small for the basket and the garlic tends to ooze around it. But I still like the removable basket, and hope to find a press that fits better... -- Jani in WA |

The Oxo has heft so you can use it to smash garlic (don't use your expensive knife as hammers folks!), Zyliss afraid the pot metal it feels like would crack. -- Charles The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.
