Default I need a new garlic press

My current garlic press is about ready to be replaced. What do you
recommend I get to replace it?

Yeah, I know that it's easy to mince up garlic with a knife, but I like
using a garlic press.

There was an article in CI sometime ago about the best garlic press. I
don't have access to the article; maybe someone knows.

My longest-lived garlic press to date is some nameless piece of cast
aluminum that I probably picked up at the grocery store.

I buy the big jug of peeled fresh cloves of garlic at Costco and store
them in the freezer for use as needed. I get out as many cloves as I
need about 5 minutes in advance of pressing. At that point they're nice
and soft and easy to squish.

There may or may not be a noticeable flavor difference between fresh and
frozen garlic; I myself have never noticed it. And the jumbo jugs of
peeled cloves certainly encourage experiments like making large batches
of roasted garlic to spread on bread.

I bought the best (lasted about 10 years) garlic press in the produce
section at the grocery store. It was stainless steel construction. Could
crush several cloves at a time. It didn't require a separate thing to poke
through the holes to "clean it", you just flipped it around to the other
side and it had built-in spikes to poke out the uncrushed garlic. Then you
just washed the press. There was no need for an expensive gadget and yes,
they are handy Good luck in your search.

I second that, last Christmas i was given a Zyliss and compared to my
old one its so much easier to use, better design, ergonomically? my old
press required a great deal of effort to squeeze, the new Zyliss don't.
Plus it has a bigger container for the garlic.

Me to, i like to put raw crushed garlic in just drained pasta and toss
it, and in a green salad, better than wiping the bowl with a cut clove,
but im a garlicophyle, i loves me garlic.

I like smashing it with the side of a metal mallet-type tenderizer then
chopping it. The one garlic press I had made it too fine.

Look at how it's made. Either it's cast or it's formed of bent steel,
usually stainless. I have never had a cast one last. No matter who
makes it, a cast one will break at the stress point at the basket. My
last one was Calphalon, cast, and lasted a couple months. Oxo is also
cast. My present one is is Cuisinart and is formed and is about two
years old and has never given me any trouble.

That sounds like the one I have. Works very well.

I love crushed garlic. The smell is incredible! One type of press
that I woulld avoid is plastic. I tried one once and it was hard
to clean and snapped apart easily. The one I have right now has a
removable basket to put the garlic into -- it's easy to clean but
doesn't fit together well. The press is too small for the basket
and the garlic tends to ooze around it. But I still like the
removable basket, and hope to find a press that fits better...

A good chef's knife.

Sorry, can't help ya. Never found a garlic press that was easier to use
than a knife.

HATE my Zyliss, bought the Oxo good grips one. It has a way to clean the
holes my Zyliss does not. The Oxo has heft so you can use it to smash
garlic (don't use your expensive knife as hammers folks!), Zyliss afraid
the pot metal it feels like would crack.

I'm with you on that. I hate to get out the garlic press from the drawer.
Now how lazy is that.
But I do think one will not ever with a knife get the same texture as what
comes out of a garlic press; pound all you want.

I have a KitchenAid that came with a set of utensils. Very sturdy and works
good, when I use it. I'd buy it again.

IKEA has one for about 2 bucks that works great. I've had mine for
years. I like it because the plunger has a nice fit and the garlic
doesn't creep up the sides.

Is it this one?:

I'm looking for one with a removable insert. I've never shopped at
Ikea before...

That's it. I don't remember what comes apart and it's at our other
place. Looks like the price went up though. Like someone else
mentioned some of them break. I like the long handles and strength.

IKEA is a funny place. Some stuff it total crap and some is good
quality and a good value. You just need to be careful.

Thanks, Lou -- I bookmarked the page and will probably get one via
the site soon. We don't have an Ikea store around here, that I know
of...

G'day Anny,

There was a review of these gizmos in "Cook's Illustrated" a few
issues back this year IIRC. Worth a read if you can track it down.

Cheers, Phred.

I have one of those. I leave it at work because I cook there
occasionally. I don't like it as well as my Zyliss because it's less
ergonomic.

I have at least 4 garlic presses. That is my least favorite.

Here is one worth looking for.
