Indeed it does. When we first moved to Cleveland in 1957, and I had my
first taste of Vernor's, I though, "so this is ginger ale". Before that I
think I had only had Canada Dry and wasn't very impressed. I'm not
familiar with Reed's.

Well, from the store locator, it's certainly available in my area
(Phoenix). Guess I've just never noticed it. Although I'm not a big soda
drinker anymore. I'll have to try it now just out of curiosity.

Thanks, Sarah.

American cigarets put out more second-hand smoke than the smoker
inhales into their own lungs. Sitting around at a canasta table
with a smoker for 40 years is plenty of exposure.

If anyone were to provide convincing evidence that aspartame and/or
sucralose were unhealthy, I wouldn't use them. My objection to
"processed foods" is aesthetic. There's nothing less healthful about
jarred mayo or onion soup mix than using fresh, it's just a matter of
crappiness. As far as the partially hydrogenated oils go, that is
beyond the doubt of almost any halfway knowledgable person.

Artificial sweeteners seem to be a pretty positive thing, health-
wise. I find most grapefruit pretty unappealing w/o sugar or Splenda,
and grapefruit is a good-for-you thing. Tell you what, provide
evidence that any particular sweetener is bad, and I'll embrace that
knowledge.

It's good with duck.
Duckling L' Vernors

1 (approximately 4-pound) duck
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 (12-ounce) bottles ginger ale
1 teaspoon gingerroot, sliced
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup orange marmalade
2 tablespoons prepared brown mustard
1 tablespoon green onion, chopped
2 tablespoons brandy
3 tablespoons brandy
1 orange, sliced

1. Rinse, trim and quarter duck; pat dry. Place skin side down on a
roasting pan, sprinkle with salt, and pepper. Bake in a 350 degree oven
for 50 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, in a saucepan combine together ginger ale with sliced
ginger root; bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until reduced to
about 1 cup. Add in orange juice, brown sugar, orange marmalade, prepared
brown mustard, chopped green onions, and 2 tablespoons brandy. Bring to a
boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the mixture is a thin syrup, about
20 to 25 minutes. Remove the ginger.
3. Turn the duck skin side up, drain any fat, and baste thoroughly with
the sauce. Return to the oven and bake another 45 minutes, basting every
10 minutes. Add 3 tablespoon brandy to the remaining sauce and simmer
until thickened. Remove duck to a serving platter and pour on the sauce.
Garnish with sliced orange.

You can use chicken instead, but I've never done that. The duck version is
great. I have also seen this said: "If you can't get Vernor's Ginger ale,
use regular ginger ale but double the amount of fresh ginger to 4 slices,
and add a dash of vanilla to the orange juice."

I'd have never thought about it, but I bet it's delicious. Could probably
also be used with Cornish hens. Saved for future. Thanks, Doug.

I've heard that many people use Vernor's to glaze hams. Looking at the
recipe above, I think I could just use ham or pork instead of duck, and it
would probably come out very well.

I've not done it myself, but a friend in Cleveland always glazed her ham
with Vernor's. It was delicious!

See, this is just not the way some of us feel. I really don't like water.
I still drink it, but I am just not going to drink the amount of plain
water I need in order to be healthy.

Diet Rite Tangerine Soda, with splenda? Fresh iced tea? Those
I will guzzle.

Since the point seems to be to get more hydration into people,
I think it's best they have stuff they actually like to drink around.

However, I do acknowledge that the artificial sweeteners may
be problematic. Under the Weird Stuff in Large Quantities
heading.

I do drink water, quite a bit. I also enjoy diet sodas. I have a
minifridge at work, so I have nice selection and can have them when I
like.

Not, however, in my opinion. I generally find diet soda to be quite
tasty. Of course, I've been drinking it 30 years.

Water is adequate, but without substantive flavor.

I don't think it's the big macs, I think they stick it in the "big mac
sauce". I ask for it on a double cheeseburger on the rare occasions I go
there with my daughter.

I do use sucralose (Splenda) in some cooking that I do where it really
cannot be detected for itself. I never use it in beverages or in large
amounts.

Stevia is being used a lot -- I've heard -- in Japanese products and now in
American products more and more.
I've bought it and used it -- it seems as though what I bought was in a
liquid form, although it is probably sold in all forms.

Aren't they now adding it -- or it is Pepsi or Coke -- to diet drinks? don't
know.

I use so little sugar (so I think), that I just use (organic) sugar.

Do this:

In a 64 ounce jug, mix 10 packets of nutra-Sweet, 1 packet of Fruit Punch Kool-Aid and
1 packet of Strawberry kool-Aid. Shake well.

I guarantee substantial flavor.

And yes I make it all summer.

When I want a fizzy drink it's diet Mountain Dew. Been drinking Mountain Dew since it
came out . Diet since I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

Why, when I could just drink the diet soda I prefer?

Most of the time I drink lemon water that is sweetened with just a
little Splenda, and I also cook with Splenda. There are diabetics on
both sides of my family, so I have avoided sugar since I was in high
school. On special occasions and during the holidays, I will have a
treat, other than that, I avoid consuming sugar.

This lemon water sounds good! I will try it. I make iced coffee with
splenda and vanilla and 2% milk that tastes like Starbucks Frappacino.
It's dangerous if you're sensitive to caffeine though--like chugging
speed! I love Splenda, for me it has no aftertaste. If it turns out to be
harmful I will be in trouble. I keep a canister of Splenda next to the one
with sugar on my kitchen counter, but nobody but guests use the sugar.
Like you, I have avoided sugar since adolescence. We do have diabetics
in our family, but worse (to a teen) we have FAT people in the family!
I was not so much worried about disease as getting fat.

Obesity IS a disease.
Today, I went back on the diet. I want to lose at least 20 pounds by
late Spring, hopefully more. So far today, 3 cups of coffee with
Splenda and a little half & half, 1 small can of mushrooms, about a
tablespoon of flax seeds, and two chicken breasts, fried unbreaded in
peanut oil. Tomorrow morning I'm going to go buy a huge amount of
lettuce. I can happily eat lettuce with a tiny bit of fresh-squeezed
lemon and a light sprinkle of grated Parmesan.
I'm also going to buy in-the-shell sunflower seeds. They are the best
diet food.

Yeah, the biggest cause of death in the world is birth.

Personal experience is evidence enough for me. The mild headache and mild
sense of intermittent vertigo I experience after eating aspartame is more
than enough evidene that I should avoid it.

Perhaps so, but that doesn't mean it's a death threat.

The ONLY thing my roommate drinks is Diet Dr. Pepper or unsweetened tea
with Sweet'n'Low in it. I've never seen him drink water. He's also on a
prescription drug cocktail consisting of about 13 different medications. He
takes them all with Diet Dr. Pepper.

Diet Pepsi. Gross. I don't even like regular Pepsi. To me, regular Pepsi
tastes like Diet Coke.

You can get Big Mac sauce in a jar near the mayonnaise. It's simply called
Sandwich Spread, I believe. Looks a lot like thousand island dressing, but
the taste, while similar, isn't exactly the same.

The only cola I like is regular Coca Cola, preferably from a fountain, not
in a can or bottle.

I see nothing wrong with tea, especially if it's decaffeinated. Plus, the
water from fruits and vegetables counts as water and consumption of those
items will prevent the thirst that urges folks to drink sodas and water.

But I don't like Caffeine-Free Coke. That lacks the slightly bitter
element that makes regular Coke Classic so great.

obesity may be a disease, but dieting is not good for you, either.
