The only cold sodapop was the 2L of Diet Pepsi that had been in the
trunk of the car for a few weeks. Apparently, it had gotten hot enough in there to break down the aspartame, because it was completely not sweet. So I added some Splenda to it, and it was fine. In fact, it tasted better than usual. --Bryan |

In fact, > it tasted better than usual. God, why would you want to? I know there are diabetics out there who have to limit their intake of regular sodas, but I think drinking drinks with aspartame is not a good idea. My roommate made an apple pie once and he offered me some. I asked if it was one of those diet apple pies, and he said no. So I took a bite and immediately ran to the trash can. I checked the empty cans and sure enough, it was sweetened with Splenda. Just the presence of aspartame, saccharin, or Splenda on my tongue makes me feel like I've got something not meant to be eaten in my mouth. Once I drank a whole Fresca -- about the only diet drink I've ever tried that almost completely masks that "chemical" taste that reveals the presence of artificial sweeteners. Even after drinking that, I felt a mild, nauseaus headache lingering. But people drink them and get used to them and they can't tell the difference. It causes regular sodas to seem too sweet, to some people. Well, like substandard soda pop is related to decent soda pop, so do people become accustomed to eating meals prepared from a dinner-in-a-box meal kit: Add some water to the pretty orangish-yellow powder, mix and set aside. Add some water to the grainy cornmeal preparation, mix, and set aside. Dump the packet of red sauce in a casserole dish. Add a half pound of your favorite cooked hamburger meat. Dump the orangish-yellow goo on top. Pour the cornbread batter on top. Crumble some Dramamine on top. Cook in the oven at 350º for 45 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes and serve. Remain perfectly still for 2 hours after eating since the Dramamine can only do so much to keep it down. On occasion I've allowed myself to be suckered in to buying some of these meal kits. The picture on the box looks kind of appealing and I figure, why not! I'll give it a whirl. I have yet to find a good one. Sure, back when I was first out on my own, Hamburger Helper was pretty good for a hungry guy who didn't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. But my roommate's girlfriend made some Hamburger Helper a while back, so I decided to have a little since I was extra hungry. It was just nasty. That's all I can say. So another time she made one of those meal kits that come frozen with all the ingredients, made by Bertelli or something like that. Those are nasty, too. The cheapest cuts of meat are used, I found several hunks of gristle, and it was just gross. And she was gobbling it down as if her culinary ecstasy was more fully enraptured by her vacuum-like inhalation of food. My first bite and my face probably looked like it had been rubbed in a cow patty. Damaeus |

I've been drinking diet sodas for 30 years. Why waste empty calories on a sugar (or these days HFCS) solution, when you can spend them on far tastier things? Diet soda, no matter what the sweetener, gives me a queasy stomach. When you could get the saccharine stuff it was OK. |

In order to get it onto the market at all, Searle engaged in a lot of questionable, dodgy business that would not impress the general public. They were under Federal Investigation at one point, they were about to be dragged into court for flat-out lying to everyone about Aspartame's dangers (brain tumors, cysts, weird effects on the brain, dead research animals, etc.) when political strings were pulled by one Donald Rumsfeld, who apparently knew how to spread money around in order to make it all go away and that's exactly what happened. |

I'm not a diabetic, but my mom is, so that is what I drank -- Tab and Fresca. Full-sugar(or HFCS) soda is too... thick. And syrupy. I can't stand it. What really annoys me is that many places don't have any diet, caffeine-free soda. The only diet pop is usually diet Coke. Ugh. I can't have caffeine after lunch or I won't sleep. |

For 40 years, my grandmother played canasta once a week with the same group of ladies; one of them, Paula, smoked like a chimney. All the other ladies fussed at her and told her the cigarettes were going to kill her; she kept smoking three packs a day despite their dire warnings. I saw her again a couple of years ago at Grandma's funeral. She was still a heavy smoker. She was also the only one of the "canasta girls" still alive and, what's more, she was still spry and in full possession of her mental faculties, which is more than one could have said of Grandma in her last few years. Funny how those things turn out sometimes, isn't it? As for the aspartame, my ob-gyn convinced me years ago to avoid it. She was very concerned about it's long term effects. Regards, Tracy R. |

What is unusual is that some people seem to be addicted to it. I know one person who carries a huge 2L bottle of diet coke with him all the time. Another one carries a BAG with diet coke cans. If I tell them it is bad, they start screaming: "No evidence, it was approved by FDA". Trans fats and lots of other nasty things were also approved by FDA. What I mean, I have not seen ANYBODY carrying a 2L bottle of REGULAR coke EVERY day. It looks like some people cannot leave without it. On message boards there are posts like: "I will never stop drinking my diet coke". This unusual addiction is very strange to me. I'm positive that David, my SO, is addicted to Diet Pepsi. He rarely drinks anything else, except for juice and coffee in the morning, and sometimes he even foregoes those in preference to the Pepsi. I've given up trying to point him toward a healthier direction. Last Christmas I bought him a glass door beverage refrigerator for his home office and it stays stocked to the brim with Diet Pepsi. If he even gets the least bit low on stocking it, he practically goes into a panic attack. :-( -- Wayne Boatwright (to e-mail me direct, replace cox dot net with gmail dot com) __________________________________________________ ____________ It's lonely at the top, but you eat better. |
