We just installed a new 50 inch plasma tv. It's gigantic! Good thing
hubby didn't get the 58 incher he was coveting... it would have
overwhelmed the room!

Congrats!

After our big-screen TV broke about six months ago, hubby got a high-def
projector, rather than replace the TV. We have the display area on the wall
set at about 63 inches. Great for football and movies!

I mostly don't care what size my tv screen is, but I can hardly wait
to watch Out of Africa (which is truly a "big screen" movie) on it!

Congrats!

Good source of heat too. Probably won't need to have as many fires in the
fireplace. Should also show up noticably on your electric bill.

I have Kracker Jacks in case you're sending out invites.

Enjoy!

I don't care, either. This is just another of my hubby's toys. It's a guy
thing, I think.

OB dinner: Grilled pork tenderloins stuffed with proscuitto and provolone
and coated with olive oil and garlic. Roasted red and sweet taters; a saute
of green beans, yellow beans, and carrots; and a tossed salad as sides.

Congratulations!

We just replaced our 32" Sony in the den with a Mitsubishi 46" HDTV... we
opted for LCD instead of plasma.

Now we're in the market for a surround sound system for the HDTV... very
confusing! Any recommendations?

Funny you should ask.... LOLOL! Hubby got a Panasonic PT950 surround
sound (1200 watts, 5.1). I like the speakers... they are tall and
slim. They said it was wireless, but it's not really. It's wireless
from the receiver to the back speakers, but those two are wired
together. "Wireless rear speakers" - HA! Someone needs to ding them
for truth in advertising.

It's reminiscent of the old "wireless walkie talkie"..... Hubby saw in
the back of a comic book and sent away for it when he was a kid. It
was wireless all right - two cups and a string! LOL! He says he and
his brothers made better ones at home using two cans and a string.

We bought a 34" screen, but now EYE'd like a bigger one; it's not just a
guy-thing.

Think about measuring your distance for the optimum viewing. Even for our
34" we measured and found we were sitting too far back.

Have fun and enjoy!

My brother has a 50" flat screen high def TV. I have no idea why anyone
needs a TV this large (perhaps because I don't watch much TV). He kept
saying, "See? High definition! What a difference!" and I'm thinking no, I
really don't see any difference. It's just a big television. Of course he
also had to have a 20 inch monitor for his computer. Maybe that lasic
surgery (at $2000 per eyeball) didn't take so well after all...

Lucky you. Now you will need high definition service, a high definition DVD
player..... and a gym membership to get you back into shape after wasting
too much time sitting on your duff enjoying the new toy :-)

I have always been disappointed in pictures of mountains, whether in books
photos projection screens, movies. They just don't the majesty of those big
piles of rock. Then one day I was walking through an electronics store
where they were showing a video of a balloon floating along through the
mountains. I was impressed, but the price tag scared me. They have come
down a lot since then.

I know what you mean, although I *can* see a difference with HD. A
20" monitor would drive me nuts. My current monitor is 17" but I
don't use full screen mode for anything. My new reader's window is
now about 13". That's enough for me.

Hey, hubby is no novice here! We have all of the above plus HD cable
channels! LOL

Now I can sit at the computer AND watch HDTV by just glancing up.
It's almost like having a picture in picture screen.

Hubby was the same way--all excited about the HD. I can see a difference,
but I could care less about it.

Sorry, I am no help. For my birthday, my oldest son hooked up our
surround sound. Too many buttons, gadgets and gizmos for me. He showed
me which button to push to turn it on/off. I put a smiley face sticker
on the button, so I would remember which button to push (am I getting
old or what!). He is a petroleum engineer, I wonder where he learned
this stuff. LOL

Becca

Ob Food:

Spanish Rice

2 1/2 cups water
salt and pepper
1 onion, chopped
1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups long-grain rice
1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro
1 medium tomato, seeded and diced small
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Bring the water to a boil, covered, in a small saucepan. Add 1
teaspoon salt and season with pepper to taste; cover to keep hot.

Meanwhile, combine the onion, jalapeño, oil, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a
large saucepan. Cover and cook over medium-low heat, stirring
occasionally, until the onion is softened, 8 to 10 minutes.

Increase the heat to medium and add the tomato paste and garlic. Cook
until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the rice, and stir to coat the
grains with oil. Cook until the edges of the grains begin to turn
translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in the hot seasoned water and bring
to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until all the water
is absorbed, 16 to 18 minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat and add the cilantro and tomato — do not
mix in. Cover the pot and let stand for 10 minutes, then add the lime
juice and fluff the rice with a fork and season with salt and pepper to
taste.

What a great birthday present. When I got a new stereo receiver for my TV
VR DVD satellite I had a heck of a time getting it set up properly. I had
to make a number of changes to get it right and it took a few weeks. Two
years <?> ago I got a new stand to hold all that electronic gear I
diligently labelled all the wires so that they could be hooked back up the
same way. I don't know if the labels were old or just cheap. When I got the
new stand put together and the electronic gear in place I started
reconnecting the cables. All but one of the labels had fallen off. It took
hours to get everything back together. It wasn't that hard to figure out
where they went. The trouble was running them through the access holes and
figuring out which was which.

I have successfully conned oldest stepson into setting up the surround
system when we finally figure out which one to purchase... he says we need
a blu-ray DVD player... ONLY adds plus or minus $500 to the price tag! I
don't think blu-ray is an absolute must <g>

Remember when we used those tiny little black and white monitors? Kids
today don't realize how rough we had it. <g>

Becca

Ob Food:

Shoepeg Corn and Baby Pea Salad

(you will not believe how great this tastes)

Salad
1 large green pepper, seeded and chopped
1 1/2 cups celery, chopped
1 (15 ounce) can baby green peas (Le Seueur brand)
1 cup green onions, chopped
1 (4ounce) jar diced pimentos, drained
1 (11ounce) can white shoepeg corn
Dressing
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup sugar (or substitute Splenda)
1/4 cup canola oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried dill

In a large bowl with a good top that seals, combine all of the
vegetables and toss to combine.

In a seperage jar or bowl, mix together dressing ingredients. Pour the
dressing onto salad and mix together. Place tight fitting top on bowl
and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

While salad is in the refrigerator, reach in about every 30 minutes or
so and give the bowl a shake upside down to help the dressing cover all
the veggies.

Serve cold with a slotted spoon. Serve remaining dressing on the side.

Bought a surround sound from Costco about a year ago -- I don't know what
brand(s) they carry. But since we don't care a lot for action movies, we
did rent one of those soaring planes action film to see how it worked.
Ouch! Oh, my aching eardrums! Maybe because it was a small room, but the
sound filled the space, but good!

I have sling box hooked up to view TV through my computer, sometimes when
they switch from one side of the screen to the other, it can scare the h---
out of me.

You would be correct, I think, to buy the best you can afford. When I
bought a sound system for my first computer, I'm still using it, the music
and talkie-sound is absolutely terrific -- no, they don't make them
anymore. (The big woofer sits on the floor, and two excellent speakers sit
on either side of the screen.) We've bought other speakers for DH's
computer(s), they all sound tinny in comparison.

We have the 58...but we have a *huge* living room. The first thing my brother said
when he first came to our house was "Holy cow, anyone for a game of football?"

We have an open floor plan, so the view from the front door goes all the way to the
back of the dining room, where there are two picture windows that overlook the
canyon. Makes the room seem even bigger. But I will say that in a room smaller than
this, or even if this room was more separated, it would be overwhelming. I already
feel like I'm at a movie half the time! But it's good because my vision isn't what it
used to be and I can see it better than I could the old tv.

Chris,

I don't know what your budget it, but the Bose Lifestyle systems are very good
quality and do a great job. And then when you get it all set up and are in need of a
universal remote to control it all, drop me a line ;-)

IMO it doesn't make a lot of sense to get all the latest audio video
equipment and not get the sharpest, clearest sound and video because of a
week link in the system.

OTOH.... I tend to be a little behind the cutting edge of technology. I
made the mistake of rushing into buying a DVD when there weren't even many
discs in the rental stores. I paid about $450 for the DVD player at the
time, and could probably replace it with a better machine now for $50. I
really wanted a digital camera but they were prohibitively expensive and
low quality. I waited until I could get a 2 megapixel model for under $200.
A few years down the road you can higher definition, optical zoom and many
other features for much less than that.

So..... all considered, my advice is to wait until blue ray is the standard
and you can pick one up for under $100...... 6 months? 12 months? Or will
something come along and make that obsolete too?

Remember 8 Track and Beta?

I'll weigh in here -- I'd like to have HD -- but it would mean new
installation prices and making a decision on where to put another TV (for
only my viewing). DH doesn't care at all. I've seen HD in stores, and
there seems to be a difference. Even on the shows that are broadcast in HD
here at home (we have HD capability in our TV), and we don't subscribe, I
can see some difference -- others may argue that I don't.

I've had a 20" LCD screen for some time now. I turned over the 17" LCD to
DH. When I have to go to his computer to get something, it screams "SMALL!"
Although I do have a 17" laptop in the kitchen and it does seem big enough;
probably because I'm not sitting at it.

If he got a 1080, you should see the difference right away, but if not, it can be
hard to tell depending on the input.

With a living room like ours, a small tv would look ludicrous and be impossible to
see ;-)

DH does a lot of chosing when renting DVD's. Many are in b/w. The first
question I ask is "Is it in black-and-white." I am not one of those that
think it's artistic, whether on computer or TV ;-))

Remember when the big stink was "Is Ted Turner going to colorize?".

You are a 'very good person' letting the TV sound being on whilst using thy
computer.

I use the slingblade to get TV on my computer making it any size (limited to
20" the size of my computer," but I have to use earphones or it disturbs His
Majesty! :-))))

I admit to preferring colour, but there are a lot of good movies out there,
even recent ones, that are black and white, and I would hate to miss out on
them just because of me preference for colour. But I also enjoy a lot of
foreign films and don't mind reading subtitles.

I'll second that. I've got the BOSE system that stores 350 music CD's
and does all those other things.. it is great for surround sound using
very small speakers. Almost eerie sometimes when you hear fragments
(layers?) of background noise behind you (from the film you're watching)
and it truly makes you think it is something real life in your house.
As for TV's though, I'd never want nor get one so large. Big decorating
liability (suddenly the TV is the entire focal point of the room, ugh)
and I don't want to give something like that too much "power" over me.

Your house and space sounds lovely. I love the open floor plan, big or
small.

Kimberly,

Actually we were looking at Bose yesterday. We couldn't hear the sound
quality, but the car we had before had a Bose system it... very nice.

Universal remote and you'll help me? <g>

I have looked at Logitech Universal remotes... again a mere additional $500
for near the top of the line.

I've kinda noticed all this stuff ADDS up!

I agree that it is often a guy thing. After 57 years, I've discovered
that things I covet, I don't use. Things that I don't covet (like
coats), I use. I want one of those big screen tvs. I don't like to
watch tv. Our tv works fine. We have two tvs out in the garage,
unused. I doubt that we will be buying a tv, unless the old one breaks.

Heh - and a 16:9 aspect ratio too. I'm waiting a little longer. I see
42" sets in the $800 range. Let that come down by about $200 or so and
I'll buy one.

You know, I never knew what blu-ray was until my son told me, and after
his explanation, I still do not understand.

Thank you, Dee Dee. I love the open floor plan too. I can't stand feeling confined.
Elevators are the worst. This house was built for a doctor in 1957, and he apparently
liked to entertain guests, hence the open space and huge kitchen. We lucked into it
about 10 years ago. I love it

We've always been lucky to find a house that was especially built or
planned; four homes before this one. But this last one, even though it's
larger than we've ever owned, has many small rooms (13!!!). I try to find
solice in the fact that each room fills a 'specific' need; that's the best I
can do. :-))) But, I'm glad to have a nice home; I am not complaining!

Glad you are enjoying your nice house.
Dee Dee
