Having a Gig of online hard drive space would be very useful.

http://askwiki.blogspot.com/2007/11/...om-google.html

The first use for me would be to store "My Documents". Use Winrar and
password the file then upload. No more backing up data.

Beware the data harvesters! No matter what, I'd never purposely store
any of my personal data 'online' if I can help it. Give me good old
floppies, CDs, DVDs, USB hard drives, whatever, but I won't store my
data online on any storage location I can't put my fingers on!

As long as the data isn't important to you, this is a great idea. But, if it
is important, and especially if it comes from a computer which is used to
generate income, you need total control of your backup media. With online
backups, you have no such control.

I agree. I'd be very careful with business materials, but I just want
to store family photos and my recipes.

"Just" family photos? Do you have a safe deposit box at your bank? That and
a good backup routine at home, and you're golden.

Lets see. If you make a RAR file, and then pass word protect it and upload
it to an offsite storage. Isn't that the very act of backing up data? Oops,
no more backing up data! Cancell that order! Don't do that!

Considering that a CD costs far less than a dollar, why would anyone want to
risk losing his (her) privacy by storing data offsite? I might store a
couple disks at my parents house, for example. But not at some remote
website.

Then what happens when that site where you've got them stored one day just
disappears?
I've read that this happens.

Yes, "just" family photos. There is nothing interesting about them to
anyone else. I am not a professional photographer, nor am I even very
good. I am not a paranoid, so I don't think some bad guy is going
through each and every archived photo - for a reason that alludes me
at this point.

It's a back up, Dee.... not the main place to store. Sh*t happens.

That's "eludes". And, I'm not talking about someone looking at the photos.
The risk is losing them completely, forever. If that idea doesn't bother
you, than do it your way. This isn't paranoia. This is reality. Corporations
spend millions per year for effective backup procedures and it's got nothing
to do with paranoia.

I fully agree. I wont even use my real name and personal info on
those forms that seem all too common on many websites these days.

I dont see why it's all that hard to backup at home. I have not yet
bought one of those USB Harddrives, but I have several old hard drives
that cost me under $10. About every 3 months I just plug them in to
one of the spare ide cables and copy my whole computer to it. In
between, I copy important stuff to memory sticks or floppies. I also
tried CDs, but thats far too much work since the software I have is
not capable of chaining from disk to disk.

Sure, but often all at one time. Suppose the "free" backup site
disappears the same day your hard drive toasts?

Or just disappears because they aren't making money from popups or
whatever it is that pays for their hosting cost.

What a *marvelous* idea! Tell you what, I'll provide you
with enough space on my hard drive for you to store all your
important stuff: Credit card numbers, bank account info,
etc. Just email me the info, and I'll encrypt it for free,
so you can rest easy that no hackers can get it from me.

How's that sound?

They will probably not fail if/when my HD does, so I'm not worried.

If I stored everything solely on a website off my computer, I'd be
worried.... but I don't, so I'm not.

I doubt too many if any of us have backed up our computers to
some 'free' site to have our stuff hacked. I'd be worried about it
if I did do that.

I do create over-the-net backups on occaision. The entire
archive get properly encrypted first, though. Makes the whole
thing a useless bag-o-bits to anyone but me.

Considering how cheap and simple it is to make CD backups (which aren't
perfect, but better than nothing) and find a way to store them off site
(another home, or a safe deposit box, or even in a fire safe in the
basement), it makes very little sense to do online backups.

That's for me. The only thing irreplaceable on my pc are my pictures
anyway. Those I could back up to my ISP if the software wasn't such
a pain in the butt.

Actually, folks might find it rather surprising (and perhaps
disturbing?) as to what "Big Brother" (USA) is doing clandestinely.
Reference this website from the PBS show "Frontline" (part 3) titled,
"The NSA's Eavesdropping at AT&T" at
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/homefront/view/ -- it's truly
interesting. This particular episode can be watched online. If
convenient, check these out.

Sky, who is _not_ paranoid <VBG> -- only cautious and hopefully informed

P.S. The five parts of the aforementioned Frontline episode are titled:
Part 1: A Pre-Emption Operation in Vegas
Part 2: The New Era of Pre-Emption/Prevention
Part 3: The NSA's Eavesdropping at AT&T
Part 4: National Security Letters and Data Mining
Part 5: Pre-Emption vs. the Fourth Amendment

My isp doesn't give enough room to do diddly. A few pictures; then if you
go over, it's charge, charge, charge.
Everything is connected to the phone company -- remember Lilly Thompson?
You got it!
