Default Our trip to New Mexico

We got back three days ago from a real vacation; four nights near Taos
(Arroya Seco) and two in Albuquerque.

We ate at Orlando's in Taos, and I had the "make your own bowl," with
posole, red chile, tomato, onion, and I forget the last thing, but it
was all good.

We also caught up with green chile Lota Burgers. Comfort food from
when I lived in New Mexico.

In Albuquerque we bought dry stuff (powdered chiles, red and green,
chicos and other things) at The Fruit Basket on NW 12th, and frozen
stuff and dry ice at an Albertsons near where we stayed. We also ate
at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

The day after we got home I made a pot of posole, using some things we
brought home and some pork shoulder we had in the freezer.

Life is good!

Ya know, Bob, you oughta invite us travelers to abq for a tour of the good
spots. It'd save some time, yes? That goes for you, Phil, and Arri too.
It'd be a lot easier than posting what we found on our own, only to find
from you guys that we went to the wrong place.

Oh Lord, another wonderful institution is biting the bullet. That's sad.

LOL! Probably we wouldn't agree on what is the 'wrong' place anyway.

Ah but do we really want to give away our secrets? Once a place gets
popular with outsiders, it often goes down the tubes.

Yeahbut.....some of us rfc'ers would look you up. I've been to abq a coupla
times recently and won't stop in to say hi cuz you're so selfish. Lighten
up and you'll get some company. Ok, it's only me, but you might even get
some of the heavy hitters here.

Read www.chowhound.com

They have often mentioned the top spots in Albuquerque.

ROTFL! Hard to look up someone when you don't know their real name, now
isn't it?

However, I'm not a good person to ask anyway. With our extremely limited
budget, going out is an infrequent option. Lacking a decent dining
partner, I end up at the same few places that all the others will eat
at. Certainly not the epitome of good food by any means.

What I will offer about ABQ food is that there isn't any decent 'Indian'
(I mean Asian) food that I can find readily.

Oh, I wasn't looking for fancy-schmancy, trust me.

When I'm out that way I'm on a green chile quest anyway. Asian I can get
here at home. Plus my visits to abq aren't that long that I venture beyond
the local fare.

Too bad. We had planned to have lunch at an Indian restaurant at
Wyoming and Montgomery the day we left, but finished our last-minute
shopping (frozen chile, frozen posole, dry ice) early and decided not
to wait.

The only reason we picked this place (can't remember the name) was
that there was an advertising brochure from them at our motel (I-25
and San Antonio) so they seemed convenient. It maybe that it's just as
well, although sometimes less-than-excellent Indian food is still
pretty good.

LOL! Not that place (that was India Palace wasn't it?)! A well-meaning
neighbour took me out there before I moved here. Knowing that I lived in
London and ate curries all the time, she thought I would like it. The
owners (at that time) were Sikh, but the food was generic 'curry'. I
always look at what other people are eating when I go into a restaurant.
The fact that what was on every plate was pretty much the same colour
didn't look promising.
I was right.

The others, Taj Mahal and India Kitchen aren't any better. Admittedly
I'm reaaaaaally fussy about my curries, so perhaps I'm being too harsh.

That's good. I'm not certain there are such places here anyway.

I liked the green chile at Garcia's Kitchen, but it can be inconsistent.

Restaurant green chile is rarely as good as homemade. The worst red or
green I've had here was at 505 Southwest. The second worst red was at
the cafe at Duran Central Pharmacy, in Old Town. Both places are popular
with tourists though.

Some of the local caffs in Barelas (Second and Fourth Streets SW, near
the city centre) are pretty good and very local; families have been
going there for years. There is also supposedly a good restaurant in the
Hispanic Cultural Center down there, but we haven't eaten there yet.

I liked the menudo at the one near Old Town.

Never been, and now don't plan to. Amen to the homemade!

Not local cuisine, but I tried a place downtown that served skewered meats
Brazilian style; I don't remember the name of the place but it kinda
reminded my of a NY place called Riodizio, just not as NY glitzy.

I don't think it is the same owner. Most of the customers were Anglo
when I was there about 2 years ago; that's not really a good sign when
it comes to chile around here, I think.

That's just about the only thing I haven't had at Garcia's. Will save
that for the next trip.
