Default Do-you-show-symptoms-of-diabetes

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are similar in terms of symptoms and
complications. The difference lies in the speed at which the disease
manifest in the body. Is it possible to cross over from one to the
other, I know it sound dumb but I really don't
know.....ThanksStephenwww.net-diabetics.com

Actually, Type 1 and Type II can be totally different in symptoms and
signs, not to mention often treatment.
Type 1 the pancreas absolutely does NOT make insulin. You'll be an
"Insulin dependent diabetic."

Generally with Type 2, the pancreas can make good amounts of insulin
which the body isn't receptive to, OR the pancreas isn't making enough
or perhaps a combination of the two, often referred to as "Non Insulin
Dependent Diabetes." Medications can prod the pancreas to make more
insulin if that is needed, or promote cellular receptor response to the
insulin available, and diet can often control it if one is careful. And
sometimes Type II folks and even non-diabetics will require short term
use of insulin if acutely injured or ill and medications are being given
which increase blood glucose levels. Doesn't make it a permanent
situation by a long shot.

The only way to cross over from one type to another is for a Type II to
turn into a Type I. Could be from disease progression or surgical
removal of the pancreas. Once someone is Type I, they can never be
anything but an insulin dependent diabetic.

How is it that you (advertising your diabetic website I gather) don't
know this stuff?

Cross over? Not really. A person with type 1 produces no insulin whatever.
A person with type 2 either produces not enough insulin (rare) or too much
insulin and is insulin resistant. It is possible after many year that a
type 2 will stop producing any insulin, but not very likely. Some type 2's
do use injectable insulin but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't
produce any of their own. And some type 1's can be insulin resistant.

If you have a question about diabetes that is what your doctor,
endocrinologist, or diabetes education center is for. You have a question,
ask a professional, not put it out into cyberspace waiting to hear what may
sound good to you at the moment.

Especially if you have someone who doesn't appear to understand the
topic. I am sure that you (Ginny) understands. The OP doesn't seem to.
"Speed"? I don't think so. "Crossover"? I don't think so.

There are websites and other newsgroups. RFC isn't the right place.
