I recently won a silver-plated covered serving dish
on eBay which I plan to use for a party I'm invited to on New Year's Day (assuming I'm not killed in an explosion on New Year's Eve). It'll look so elegant sitting on its four silver feet. I was tempted to buy an antique covered serving dish, because of their lavish over-the-top decoration. But I went for the modern one, because it comes with an internal oven-proof glass baking dish. I'm a bit leery of having food contact with metal. Also, I dozed off from drinking too much wine, and didn't wake up until two hours after the auction for the antique one was over. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=330195713076 I suppose that's just as well. These things take up space, and the one I did buy should be effective for operational purposes. But for over-the-top presentation bordering on the ridiculous, the antique one would have filled the bill quite well. After reviewing dozens of contestants, I wanted this one because of its bulbous style and ornateness. There was also a round one in a similar style which I would have bid on, had I bought the first one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150191754915 I suppose it's for the best I stayed outside of the Schwarzschild radius of that collecting binge. But what concerns me -- what these antiques have that my modern one lacks -- is one the main purposes of a covered serving dish: the WOW factor. When you set it down on the table, people wonder what's under that dome? What is so incredibly great and fantastic that it deserves such a flamboyant container? But if I only own one dish, the one I bought is the one to have, because of its glass insert. That, and these antique ones might suggest wrong ideas about my gender preferance. :-) |

You ain't seen nuthin' until you've seen my footed, covered, highly embellished ice server. The one where you use tongs to get an ice cube to put into a drink? It's a son-of-a-gun to polish. Scrolled feet and handles and stands 13 inches tall. I got it from an older lady who was cleaning out after a divorce. Janet |

If my oldest ever gets a house, he can have it (he wants me to keep everything, and this is from the 60s - wedding presents). I get it out and polish it now and then, just for kicks. Sometimes I use it as part of my holiday decor. N. |

And moving around it was always annoying to have to find a place to store it. I gave a mess of it away to the Salvation Army. I was young and dumb and regret it very much. I kept a lot, but it was still stupid. We entertained a lot as we moved around more in the military and I grew up. <sigh> |

Life's too short to polish silver. I'll hardly look at anything that can't go in the dishwasher. If the Queen came to dinner, she'd have to eat off the everyday dishes, as I don't have any good china. Cindy Hamilton |

I felt "too young" to be using that stuff before but love all of it now. I like all my sets of china. I like variety. An hour polishing silver is a very peaceful hour to me. I love owning and using silver (especially the monogrammed items) from my ancestors and thinking of them and where they came from and how they lived. |

All of the silver pots, etc. I got rid of a long time ago. The dishwasher does a fine job of polishing the silver. Dee Dee |

Fill the bucket with water. Dissolve some baking soda in the water (I forget how much, but the quantity is not terribly critical). Completely immerse the silver piece in the water and touch it to the aluminum. The tarnish will instantly disappear. I'm not sure this would be a good idea with silver plate, however, because eventually it might eat through to the base metal. |

That's simply removing the oxidation. Polishing is buffing to a lustre. I have an old leather trunk filled with 35-40 pieces of sterling and silver -plated holloware, including a set of water goblets and a set of sterling sherbet cups lined in gold. Too bad I never use any of it. Good thing is that each piece is wrapped in Pacific Silver Cloth. I should probably sell all that stuff. -- Wayne Boatwright Date: Dec 13,2007 ******************************************* Countdown 'til Christmas 1wks 2dys 5hrs 45mins 41secs ******************************************* Did you really expect mere proof to sway my opinion? Dear cousin who died from bc (male) spent a lot of time sorting nuts and bolts, etc. so that others wouldn't have to do it, I guess. That is what he wanted to do. But I've learned a lesson from that - think about how I spend my time and who with. You probably had a lot of thoughts along the same line with your operation. Here is what I'm doing this a.m., doing what I want to do. Putting on my wine chart the 15 bottles of wine that DH just bought yesterday, and then I will be putting them in their proper places in the wine rack. That would be sheer nonsense to others, but it is what EYE want to do -- as well as writing to you right now. Happy day, Dee Dee |

After all, who's going to use it when I'm dead and gone. :-) I've felt so disorganized this year, and with just the two of us, I tend to serve our plates from the stove. With the coming new year perhaps I'll think more about how I do things and pull some of that stuff out for ourselves. -- Wayne Boatwright Date: Dec 13,2007 ******************************************* Countdown 'til Christmas 1wks 2dys 5hrs 45mins 41secs ******************************************* Did you really expect mere proof to sway my opinion? I wouldn't sell it on eBay, at least not right away. Anything silver with gilt interior would be very nice. I could use a carving fork and knife, especially with very ornate handles. If it matched one of my manche a gigot handles, that would be very cool! :-) |

I also have a sterling carving set with carved ivory handles. But I wasn't planning on disposing of any of my flatware. -- Wayne Boatwright Date: Dec 13,2007 ******************************************* Countdown 'til Christmas 1wks 2dys 5hrs 45mins 41secs ******************************************* Did you really expect mere proof to sway my opinion?
