"On the beach." Yeah. I've got to go in to work early tomorrow
morning (4:30 instead of 5:30) to shovel snow. I hope that the Sat.
eve guy is doing all that he can so there won't be too much. It
should stop snowing by about 4:30, but then there'll be 20-35 MPH
wind. Usually I like my job pretty much.

I'm down with Ostara and especially Midsummer, but you can have my
share of Yule. I dislike Winter.

I'm a fan of glugg/glogg.

Glugg "Holiday" Punch
By: Stephanie Da Silva

Ingredients:
1 bottle Dry red wine
1 bottle White wine
1 Cinnamon stick
12 Allspice berries, cracked
12 Whole cloves
12 Cardamoms, optional
Rind and juice of 1 orange
1 cup Dried fruit (raisins, currants, figs, dates), up to 2 cups
1 cup Whole almonds
1 cup Akvavit or Vodka

Directions:
Combine wines in a large enamel pot. Tie spices in cheese-cloth. Add
Orange rind, orange juice, fruit, and nuts. Bring to a boil. Reduce
heat immediately to simmer. Simmer for 1 hour. Pull out spice bag
and orange rind. Add Vodka or Akvavit.

Serve warm, with a portion of fruit in each cup.
Store leftovers in jar in refrigerator for up to 3 months.

I absolutely love glög! One of my dad's brothers was a fabulous cook, and
he introduced me to this many years ago. Your recipe looks virtually
idenical except that he used brandy instead of vodka.

Oh, one other difference... At the end of simmering, he placed a fine wire
rack on top of the pot, mounded a cup or so of sugar cubes on it, then
poured the brandy over them and ignited them. The sugar melted into the
pot along with most of the brandy.

That's an internet recipe. Our family recipe used wine, vodka and
sweet sherry - if I remember it correctly.

Hmm... sweet sherry would be a nice addition. I'm not too fond of vodka
"anything". It's always smelled and tasted like rubbing alcohol to me, not
that I've actually tasted it. :-)

I've had the good stuff, but still don't like either vodka or tequila.
Gin, OTOH, could be a fatal weakness if I let it. :-) A good gin martini
is my favorite cocktail. I seldom drink anymore.

I couldn't stand the smell of gin when I was young. I liked tequila
and loved vodka. I still like them both, but now gin is my weakness
also. Louise gets me a 1.75 bottle every year for my birthday and
when it's gone I stay away until next year. I like it just a little
too much. <g>

In Germany I get a tallish cone shaped lump of sugar to use for that

That is actually one of the differences between the cheap stuff and the
upscale stuff. They just have more sophisticated equipment at the
distillery.

I wonder how much it cost them in charcoal filters? It probably would

But according to Sheldon, "the cheapest and nastiest vodka" is fine,
and if you buy anything else for mixed drinks, you are a fool. You
mean Sheldon is wrong?

If you can cover up the taste (like in a White Russian), why not? I'd
save the better stuff for when I can actually taste the vodka.

Since a blind test has already established that the preferred
vodka of an expert panel was diluted USP alcohol, what is the
taste of a better vodka?

However, I think I have mentioned that the only vodka I really
like is pepper vodka made and kept in the freezer by steeping a
dried hot pepper in the cheapest vodka that I can find :-) If
you like pepper vodka, it is hard to buy and what Absolut calls
Peppar Vodka is obviously made with green sweet peppers.

If you like pepper vodka, why stop at a dried pepper? I've used fresh
jalapeno for that and it really packs a wallop.

Next time perhaps, thanks! One advantage of the dried pepper is
that you can see the color of the liquor change and test it when
you think it is ready. It's fast too.

Sheldon's method just masks the bad taste of cheap vodka. The filtering
method means you could drink it straight and not notice any off
flavoring.

They used a Brita water filter for the job. You can buy the gallon plus
just that filter the water.

I've read this also. I've also read the impurities in cheap stuff are
what causes hangovers. But I've also heard the hangover is caused by
dehydration. I dunno which is true. Maybe both?

I'm not advocating super premium vodkas. I too want vodka to be
"neutral," nothing but 40% ethanol, 60% pure water. Cheap vodkas like
Crystal Palace have residual impuities which are filtered out in
something like Absolut, Finlandia, SKYY and the like.

I think both. Vodka and gin are less likely to give you a hangover than the
darker colored booze, and straight up or water is better than soda mixers.
Moderation works the best though.
