Eugene weathermen are teasing us with the possibility of a Christmas
Day dusting of snow...given the misery snow's been causing in other areas of the country, I admit to a bit of guilt over my loopy delight at the prospect. Snow for Christmas was a special part of my childhood and brings back many fond memories. After the carnage of present opening, Mom used to bundle us up & scoot us outdoors with Dad to try out our new Flexible Flyers, or skates, or Flying Saucers...clearly Santa was into winter sports. We'd come back red cheeked to cups of steaming hot cocoa and the best smelling kitchen in all of New England. Mom, her sister, & my two Grandmothers whipped up some pretty fabulous holiday dinners and we always had a full house. Almost everyone from those years is gone now, and much as I'd enjoy cooking for a crowd, this year it's just the 2 of us. Picked up some fresh Oregon Dungeness Crab, artichokes & French bread for dinner tonight. Eggs Benedict is our traditional Christmas Brunch - and DH's favorite. We'll grill some marvelous filet mignon for Christmas dinner along with fresh asparagus and a decadent potato gratin DH loves. The markets were bustling today, but people everywhere were downright merry - Eugene is a very cool place. We're looking forward to a lovely Christmas...and if Santa wants to dust us with Christmas snow, I might just have to dig out that vintage Flying Saucer. Merry Christmas and Warm Wishes to all you good folks, Nancy T |

But the last 3 days have been warm, and now we have green grass and dirt-covered snow-piles decorating the area. Safer for driving, even if the reindeer can't leave their cute little footprints!<G> Tomorrow we're serving lunch at the shelter. Hills upriver have been dusted all week - very pretty. Are you in this neck of the woods? Nancy T |

I live in Alaska and we have had snow here since October. Not enough
but some. In our area, unemployment is high & many folks are "working poor" who barely scrape by. The Eugene Mission and Food for Lane County do a heckofajob for folks in town, but our area is rural, with limited services. Our volunteer firemen raise funds with a pancake breakfast to run a Christmas program that helps local families in need during the holidays. We've participated for the last three years, adopting a family and providing them with a carload of holiday food and personalized gifts - it's one of the very best parts of our Christmas. Now that the firemen have gotten to know us, we were asked to be "Santa's elves" and help with deliveries - DH actually got to meet our family. Choked up my stoic old Marine husband pretty good - he could tell it meant the world for those parents to be able to give their 3 little girls a Christmas. Nancy T |

A little farther north (we're about 26 miles west of Portland) and a bit higher in elevation (1200ft), but we're expecting a couple of inches for Christmas. Had a dusting this morning, so I expect we'll get the snow. I have to admit that snowy photos give me a little nostalgic tug, but I'd just as soon not get closer than a distant view of snowy peaks, thank you. I was thinking yesterday how is it that Christmas and snow got connected in our minds when most of the world doesn't have snow on December 25th, and in particular Jeruselam. Must be the same influence that brought us an evergreen tree inside the house! All the best to you and yours for the coming year. -- http://www.judithgreenwood.com |

(i have Yak Traxs, so i can get down without wading through the snowbanks) lee <on the way out now to give Perl the llama her penicillin & wash her head in hot water. she got dog mauled> |

It was almost gone by sundown, but then the temperature drooped to 26 and the rain turned into snow and we got a few more inches so it is nice and snowy here. |

Hello, NancyT and Happy Holidays. I'm a 36 year Oregonian (mostly around) Portland but now living in Northern CA. I have friends in Eugene and Portland and regularly look at the Register Guard and the Oregonian online. |

I guess it's just as well my parents didn't come over here for lunch. And it's a good thing I got out and back when I did. Had to go to the drugstore to get different meds for husband. And now I think I'll go crawl under the covers and hide with the cat. I hate snow!!! |

Fluffy flakes are falling at a good clip. The back yard next door has about an inch on it. It may or may not stick overnight. OB Food: Last night we ate roast beast (beef) next door with friends. Tonight SO is making duck à l'orange with Lundberg's wild/brown rice mix. I'll probably roast some carrots and parsnips alongside the duck. The aforementioned next door neighbors are doing "Jewish Christmas"--going to a neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Merry Christmas! Cindy -- C.J. Fuller Delete the obvious to email me |

We now have 8-10 inches so I served dinner mid afternoon and sent everyone home early because the roads are getting bad. It's supposed to snow another 4-6 inches Thursday. We had a very nice, long weekend and I'm thankful that the snow didn't impact our family celebration. gloria p |
