Default WHY ?

It was cool, blustery.... a perfect soup day.
In a nostalgic mood, I heated up a few cans of
Campbells Cream of Tomato Soup.

This doesn't taste like the soup I remember.
This stuff is ...SWEET !
Sweeter than tomato soup should taste.
Aha.. second item in "ingredients" is Corn Syrup.

Why in Gods name would you add corn syrup to Tomato soup ?
It doesn't make the soup any "tomato-ier".

Do the people at Campbells have any common sense at all ?
There's always been "too much salt" in many of their soups.
Now, Corn Syrup ?...............Why add these ingredients ?

I've gotta find another soup-maker.

As a longtime cream of tomato soup lover, I feel your pain. I suspect
that Campbell may be using inferior tomatoes, and the corn syrup is
added in a failed attempt to make the product taste more like ripe
tomatoes.

You might try doing what I do: Use regular tomato soup but substitute
milk or cream for some or all of the water, although the soup still
doesn't taste as good as it used to. If it's available in your area,
you might try the Pacific Natural Foods version. It is sold in those
aseptic vacuum cartons. Pacific tastes the way Campbell's cream of
tomato soup should taste. The brand is based in Oregon. Their website
is www.pacificfoods.com. By the way, I have no affiliation with this
organization.

Cream of tomato soup is really good served with a pat of butter on top
and a sprinkle of dill. :-)

Make it yourself. It's very easy and you can either can or freeze it for
quick use. I think they use it because they can and it sells to a
generation grown up sucking down sugar coated everything.
Some people even add sugar to homemade tomato soup "to cut the acid." If
you don't like the small amount of acidity in tomatoes, use cabbage or green
beans for heaven's sake.

cream of tomato is pretty simple. you can control your own
levels of sugar at least (& salt if you start with fresh
tomatoes).
tomato-carrot soup is really good too. the carrots add a bit
of sweetness, but nothing like corn syrup

I think they know, without the sweetener and salt, consumers wouldn't
buy it more than once. (the best tomatoes aren't used for soups/juices)

I made the 15-bean soup w/ham. Nothing to brag about..bland as
usual...thank G for hot sauce.

I've often whined about that very thing here. It is ghastly!
I've found that store brands are often better tasting for this food,
short of making your own. Give them a try.

Unfortunately all of the industrial food manufacturers have decided that
people no longer have any taste and anything made with tomatoes can
never ever be savory and must be as sweet as a dessert topping.

Maybe they have a good sense of the market segment they're appealing to.
I like tomatoes to taste savory, not sweet, so I buy plain canned
tomatoes or use fresh. When I want soup, I make it from those
ingredients. I don't look for canned soup. Perhaps the manufacturers
know they're not going to get my business anyway so they try to appeal
to the people who want sweet.

There are so many recipes on the net... you can probably find one
that's close enough to yours and just change a couple of things to
post.

What have you done to yourself?

Bland? Why??? You need some onion, son and beans need salt. If the
ham didn't do it, you needed to add extra.

Look in the mirror... the only thing easier than tomato soup is
boiling water... doesn't get any dumber than buying canned tomato soup
and then complaining about it. duh

Did you ever think that perhaps because you're older your taste has
changed, and maybe you're on drugs, really.

DO NOT write to Campbell and complain about the product. I repeat: Don't
write to them.

i have nerve damage to the ulnar nerve in my left arm. i
smashed my elbow against a wall in college, causing a bone
bruise. that swelling damaged the nerve. mostly it's just
background annoyance, like hitting your funny bone but it
never stops feeling like that. it also prevents me from having
very good fine muscle control over the pinkie, ring & middle
fingers on my left hand. so i type with my forefinger & thumb
of my right hand. i can actually type fairly fast unless i'm
transcribing.
after 30+ years i'm pretty used to it.

Ugh! Nerve damage is a terrible thing. I don't know if I could ever

I think Joe is being sarcastic, implying that the OP should write to
Campbell and not to rfc for remedy.

You win the prize. I don't know for sure what goes on in other people's
homes, but I'd bet $100 that the OP won't even call the toll free number on
the soup can's label, much less mail a letter to the manufacturer.

I've been online since 1994 or 95 and rfc is one of the first sites I
subscribed to.

I think many people are hesitant to complain to mfgs. because they think
no one will pay any attention to their complaint or that they are the
only ones who dislike the product. I usually don't complain, I just buy
a different product.

I think many people have some sort of actual fear of speaking to
corporations. It's bizarre. But, corporations do listen sometimes.

Back in November, I found I could no longer get Arnold Jewish rye at
Wegman's. While that's not the be-all and end-all of rye bread, it was the
best they had in their stores. Actually, in the mutant neighborhoods, that
was the ONLY rye bread they had, so when it was gone, there was no rye at
all. When I wrote to them, they said "it was discontinued". No kidding?

I pointed out in a second email that I *never* shop at two different stores.
If I had to go to their competitor for a couple of unique items, my entire
shopping list would go with me, and they'd lose much more than the $3.00 for
a loaf of bread. So, either give us product that equal or better than the
one they discontinued, or bye bye money.

A lot of other people must've bitched, too, because Arnold rye is back.

It's not only corn syrup...it's high fructose corn syrup, which is sweeter even than
corn syrup! I never liked canned soup, except for Campbell's tomato...and now I can't
stand that. It makes me so sad that I'll never have the real stuff again. It was part
of every cold when I was a kid, tomato soup and grilled cheese.

Not with megacorps. I had an issue with wachovia. I had numerous people
shaking their heads when I related the story.

I wrote a polite letter to the ceo/presidents/chairman's (same guy)
office explaining that their actions defied any logic and none of their
people who could be reached by phone did anything more than give me the
"we are megacorp and you are a little meaningless piece of crap so just
go away" line. A literate and polite woman called back and I explained
the scenario and she very, very politely told me that thats the way they
do things at megabank.

I've also run into that with WAMU (another 'institutional' bank
that has systems in place to confound and disrupt customer
service.)

But...

I still write my Letters and have enjoyed many more successes than
failures. For those, like WAMU, that are clearly unwilling to
listen to my complaint, I post warnings everywhere I can.

My favorite electronic source is the BBB.org. Many will not use
them (coincidently, the same that bitch-and-moan aloud but won't
write A Letter or post a warning) and consider them impotent but,
again, my experiences are often vastly different.

Please keep writing your Letters!

Could we draw a distinction between complaints and complaints?

The original poster wrote to say that he preferred Campbell's old recipe
for canned tomato soup. The new one is too sweet for his tastes. I
agree that I probably wouldn't like the product if I tried it, but I'm
not sure Campbell's has really done anything wrong here. The
ingredients are listed. The contents are what's listed as advertised.
Tastes will always differ, and it's a safe bet that the folks at
Campbell's know that. Writing a letter to the company probably would do
no harm, but I wouldn't count on the company changing their product, and
if they don't listen to the consumer in this instance, that's a good
reason not to buy a product that you don't like, but I wouldn't malign
the company. They haven't done anything worse than making a product
that you don't like.

Contrast that with some of the horror stories we all have of companies
or stores advertising one thing and then not coming through with even
the basics of delivering what was promised or what one could reasonably
expect in the way of service, situations where you end feeling like you
could win a court case if it were worth the trouble. I'll bet some of
us have been in situations where we have a sudden and disturbing
sympathy with the people who go berserk and start shooting at people who
work in offices. Different story there. Write the letter. Make some
noise. (And resist the urge to shoot people.)

i complain if i have a complaint. how else would they know i
hate their product or the packaging or...?
i also call & tell them if they actually do something really
good too.
most companies are quite responsive to criticism & try to
'make things right' if they can. some companies will inundate
you with coupons forever...

I am the original plaintiff. ( L&O jargon )
I guess I posted my plaint here for some opinion
of "why they'd screw up their soups".

Internet makes it easier to complain direct to the manufacturer,
and I have in several instances.

I've received denials, a couple "we're TERRIBLY sorry"s,
and a few coupons for a replacement product......

But I'm not dumb enough to think I can change the way
Campbells makes soup.

One other poster was right.... look for a different product.

Yup...it's true...remember last year or so when someone here mentioned that
Heinz 57 Sauce was unavailable/in short supply. They mentioned that they
wrote Heinz and were sent a coupon good for a free bottle of the product. I
wrote and got a coupon too, others here did the same...
