last Halloween someone posted that Just Born, Inc. was having
Halloween Peeps manufactured in China. i emailed them to
express my concern, since i won't knowingly buy food items
from China (which means i pass up any produce not labeled with
country of origin. i'm a 'scratch cook', so i avoid premade
crap).
Just Born CS replied promptly that only the individually
wrapped Halloween treats were made in China, and that it was
only because they were producing them as a test market & China
could produce the molds faster & less expensively than they
could, but that in no way would regular production be moving
away from PA. ok. i can deal with that. my Peeps were safe.
so, last Friday i got a pile of boxes from UPS (i hate
shopping. i like my computer) & there was a box addressed to
me from Just Born.
i received a box of Peppermint Stars (new & quite yummy), a
box of Christmas Trees & a box of green Peeps & a thank you
note saying all were from the Bethleham PA plant, and thank
you for contacting them about my concerns.
i also get calendars from Turkey Hill every year, with
coupons (i bought a carton of their high end ice cream that
was grainy. we determined the store let it melt & refroze it).

Can you? If they weren't considering importing them regularly, why would
they be doing that testing?

Because they don't have the ability to individually wrap the peeps.
Perhaps they are trying to decide if it would be worth gearing up
to do that in PA.

they said that they would not be moving any production out of
the US. if the individual wrapped Halloween Peeps sold well,
they'd be bringing the molds here & making those in PA too.

I wonder how popular they are as Halloween candy.
Better than those circus peanuts or candy corn, in my opinion.

i'm wondering where the test market was for the individual
Peeps. i never saw any around here (NH). of course, we only
get to about 8-10 houses over a 4 mile hike, so it's not like
i have a huge demographic sample

MIL used to buy Turkey Hill ice cream and my husband wouldn't eat it. Said
it was yucky.

Heh. I see them for sale, the peanuts especially and I think
People really buy this stuff??? Ack! Candy corn ... I wouldn't
eat those, either, but at least they look cute. I call them little candles.
Wax candy. No explanation for the appeal of circus peanuts.
