Default How long can I keep rice in my pantry?

I love Jasmine rice and would like to buy one of those enormous bags
from Costco or something. But it would probably take me a year or so
to get through it. Is that a problem? Does anyone know how long I
can store rice in an airtight container without something nasty
happening to it?

How big is the bag of rice you're thinking of buying? And, what is the
airtight container? Big plastic bin or what? New container?

I have kept some white rices (not Jasmine) in tightly sealed jars for years
with no problem. Brown rices, OTOH, can go rancid withi time.

As long as you kept it dry no problem. Or if you insist...freeze it in
say monthly allotment sized containers or bags.

Thanks. Those big bags are probably 10-20 pounds. My plan is to buy
it and portion it up into ziploc freezer bags. So storing the excess
bags in the freezer is OK then?

Thanks!

Remember that sometimes things removed from the freezer end up with
condensation on them when they meet humid air in the room. Now, your rice
isn't dry. It's damp.

If you have a food saver you could vacuum seal them (after freezing to kill
any critters). I've got some big half gallon canning jars (found them in the
hardware store) for just this purpose.

Gosh, surprised you haven't been chastised for shopping at the likes
of Costco! Really been feeling the love as the term 'white trash' has
been circulating wildly throughout this group. : )

But in answer to your question, freezing your rice in ziploc bags
would be your best bet. It could end up damp once it is thawed,
however, so I'd use small enough bags that you would use it all in one
fell swoop. Or perhaps freeze a variety of sizes so you have options.

What could possibly be wrong with Costco?

Costco isn't White trash. Neither is Sam's for that matter. In fact,
the merchandise is above average quality at both stores. Now, Wal-
Mart is pretty trashy, as is anywhere that sells "enhanced" beef. Wal-
Mart corporation doesn't try to sell much crappy stuff at Sam's, like
they do at Wal-Mart. $35 a year to be treated as a better class of
human being isn't bad.

Other than the package sizes I see no difference between Walmart and
Sam's Club products, quality is identical. Sam's has slightly lower
prices for bulk but Walmart bags.

One example, (and I'm not sure if this is currently true)
pistachios. Wal-Mart sells Sam's Choice, lots of bad kernels, whereas
Sam's sells Sunkist, far fewer bad nuts.
Another is beef. Wal-Mart has that "enhanced with up to a __%
solution" junk. Sam's beef is just beef, like you get at any decent
supermarket.

If you love jasmine rice it won't take you a year to use a bag. I
believe Costco carries ten-pound bags. The notion of freezing raw
rice is absurd. It will keep in its bag with no problems for a year,
in an airtight (bugtight) container for even longer. I have no
experience with freezing and thawing raw rice (and neither do the
people who are telling you to do it) but I can imagine potential
problems with moisture changes induced by the freezing and thawing.
There's no reason whatsoever to undertake them. And if by some truly
weird chance your home is invaded by rice-seeking bugs eight months
from now, what will you have lost -- 40 cents worth of rice? -aem

++++++++++++++

I'll add that if, after a year, the OP finds a bug in the rice, he should
not take this to mean that the storage method is unacceptable. Bugs happen
in rice. I've personally found two in 30 years. yawn.....

I never buy fresh meat at either... I buy cold cuts and cheeses.
