Heya all,

I just found out today that there might be a possibility of me coming
up that way for a contract at the end of January...

I can't remember everyone who is in that area.... Can you all remind
me?

Hope I can meet some of you, if I get there.

To Cindy Fuller: I am applying for a travel position at Swedish..

Swedish is a good hospital. Are you a traveling nurse? At any rate, I'm
about 185 miles to the east.

Yes, I am a traveling nurse. I would be there for about 3 months..if
I take this position and start at the end of January, I would be there
til the end of April.

Don't the US have positions for non-traveling nurses??

Most o the nurses around here have permanent positions in the hospitals.

Yes, but I don't want to take a permanent position right now. This
is a temporary staffing solution for hospitals...where there is a
shortage of nurses.

And it enables me to go various places and "live" there for a bit..

I have never been to Seattle...ever....and it is tempting to go
there..

A dangerous assignment. Once you see Seattle (and surrounds) in spring,
you may not want to leave.

The local food scene is pretty damn impressive, too.

Look us up when you get here.

A beautiful part of the world. I'd love to go and live on one of those
Islands, sightsee up around the border.

Raft Island looks good.

So does Vashon and Maury Islands.

So does Anderson, and Ketron, and Fox, and Whidbey............. [Sigh]

Lots of trees, not soo many people.

Some reviews of the Space Needle.....

LOL!! I was looking at the Needle thru Google Earth and panned north a
little. It looks like someone threw their dirty laubdry on the ground!!

Speaking of Whidbey....... here's a pic that brings back quite a few
memories for me.

It's been taken on Whidbey, at Naval Outlying Field Coupeville, looking
south.

Sure thing. You can start your pre-trip planning by browsing this
online book:

"The Food Lover's Guide to Seattle"

Our photo website has some galleries with shots of the Pike Place
market, and other local scenes.

Oy. For Cindy, that's like bringing crack to a junkie.

A few years ago, the Seattle area RFCers gathered for a cook-in. Maybe
it's time to do another one.

I usually bring anywhere from a 100 to 250 with me. I have a few
newer ones that I want to use.. I can't get the ingredients for some
of the recipes in Cradle of Flavor here in NM.

I don't know if you checked the link in my message. You can read the
book online. Of course, the hard copy version might be more convenient
to read while strolling through Seattle.

Yeah, but it is only the first 25 pages of the book, not the whole
book. And even then, they skip a few pages.

So to read the whole thing, I will have to buy it.

And I definitely will, if I take this contract.

I still have to interview first..and be offered the contract. And work
out a few more details, along with getting my license in WA state.
That's why the IF. Plus, it is not my first choice, or even my 2nd
choice, for several reasons. But it is seeming unlikely (although
still possible) that my first and 2nd choices are going to happen
right now. I am still working on those though, til the very last
minute.

But it does have a lot going for it of which one is that Seattle is
definitely a food city, and it is the Left Coast, which I prefer.

The pay isn't as good there..so I will still be on a strict budget, in
order to save for a few things this year. So it won't be much eating
out, but I am usually more interested in the places to obtain the
makings for great food anyway. It sounds like there are a lot of good
ethnic markets, and produce markets, which are right up my alley. I
would just hope I wouldn't compare it unfavorably to the SFBA, which
is my all-time favorite area.

Absolutely there are ALL sorts of positions in nursing. Experienced
nurses with particular expertise in a specialty, like Christine as
Neonatal Nurse, like to take short term contracts in various cities so
they can see different areas of the country and not be tied into the day
to day drivel or politics of a hospital. They get paid well, and often
get free housing during their stay. They're filling in when a hospital
is in need of experienced nurses for short periods.

OK, you obviously didn't read the bit in my post about *excellent* pay
rates for nurses in Saudi/Kuwait etc??

Just a question.......... why is it that most Yanks are on a 'strict
budget' or any sort of budget?

The only people we see on 'budgets' over here are people on the dole
(welfare.... no food stamps here!!) or lower income wage earners that
have 'gone beyond their means'.

Perhaps because as a single person she likes living within her income
debt free yet also likes to indulge in costly travel and other
expenditures that she budgets her money for. And all the while she
maintains that house (and payments) in Arizona while living elsewhere
for 3 month periods of time.

'Cleanskin' jumps (as in the Combat Jump in the pic) are always fun.

When the suckers load you up with about 250-300lbs of shit to take with
you, and land with you..... it's not fun anymore.

Our jump school has a motto.... "Training dispels fear"

What they didn't mention was that their training also takes all the fun out
of jumping out of a plane for a looooooooooooooong, loooooooooooooooooooong
time. It becomes 'business'...... a job to do. Another day at the office.

> Have you ever done it in the
> nude?

Yes, but not a Combat Jump. (The Military frowns upon it's soldiers jumping
into action nude ;-)

>I have a couple of friends that did it in the nude when they
> were in college.
>

My home DZ has a policy for first-timers. If you do it nude, you get it for
free.

Mind you, that is only applicable for *female* first-timers :-)

But to be fair, if they take up the option, *everyone* on the plane,
including the pilot, have to be nude.

I must admit though........ the old fella and the nut sack took a
battering!!

Ah, Yes, lived a few years on Vashon Island. First on Maury Island watched
the ships go by from Seattle to Tacoma. (DH was on one of them one time as
it passed -- sigh! for those times, 'only sometimes.')

Then after looking for a place to to retire 15 years later, ended up on
Vashon Island again, living there for a few years - thinking you can go back
again. It was an easy trip to Canada, Montana, Idaho. But that soon played
itself out.

Beautiful picture of Whidby.

Now, almost 15 years in Virginia.

Not on a budget here. But one wants to use money wisely and live healthy.
It is a discipline of sorts. Surely, people in other countries do the same,
I would think.

On the other hand........ we don't see news broadcasts every 3 months of
"killer fires", like in Santa Monica, or LA.

True.

Some do.

I would have thought that a 'contractural' nurses wage would be quite
good.

Seems the US is a sucky place for good money.

Unless you're a drug dealer or a blood sucker.

It does, but... It rains more in MA and NY than it does here. I was
shocked at how wet those places were. Here, most often the rain is in fits
and spurts or is a more gentle rain. As for humidity, it's nothing like the
east coast.

But on the flip side of that- EVERY travel nurse I've spoken to for
years have all raved about their time in Seattle. It is a oft sought out
assignment for some reason?
