Depends on the recipe. When I made it, I simply made a white sauce using
equal amounts of flour and butter, cooked down, then some black pepper and a
bit of salt added. I thinned this down with milk until I got the thickness
I wanted, then added plenty of grated sharp cheddar and poured it over my
macaroni, mixing well. I sometimes added chopped onions to this. That was
the quick version.

I've made other versions that had mustard in them and buttered bread crumbs
on top and baked in the oven. I've used other kinds of cheese. Some people
add eggs. Some people use cream instead of milk.
