Change Is Inedible

I didn't have potatoes, so I used rice
I didn't have paprika, so I used another spice
I didn't have tomatoes, so I used paste
A whole can, not a half can, I don't believe in waste.
A friend gave me this recipe, she said you couldn't beat it!
There must be something wrong with her -
I couldn't even eat it!

In case anyone might prefer that to have some meter and useful punctuation:

I didn't have potatoes, so instead I used some rice.
I didn't have paprika, so I used another spice.
I didn't have tomatoes, so I used a can of paste -
A whole can, not a half can, as I don't believe in waste.
A friend gave me this recipe; she said you couldn't beat it.
There must be something wrong with her; I couldn't even eat it.

Thank you. It's good to have an editor who takes time on the minutiae,
since I hadn't bothered. As a matter of interest, when I typed it the
lines were almost identical to your own and not broken up. Computers
have a mind of their own, obviously.

OK, my horror story.

Years ago I was dating a woman whose sister was rich and treated herself to
a year at the Cordon Bleu in Paris. Sometime later she decided to bake the
pies for Thanksgiving. So I suggested the tried and true Betty Crocker
recipe for pumpkin pie. Well she decided some substitutions were in order,
she used raspberry jam instead of sugar because she thought white sugar was
bad for you. She also was on a diet and so she left out the egg yolks
because they had fat in them. OK, so of course the pies were disgusting and
inedible. She pronounced to me indignantly that the recipe was just no
good.

My simple response would have been, "Of course the result stunk.
The recipe wasn't even in the same room when you threw these
things together."

Love it, Paul! Actually, the reason I posted that little ditty was that
often, when I read an online recipe (such as in Allrecipes), there are
countless personal reviews, and invariably the comments are, "It's a
wonderful recipe. I changed this, and that, and something else, and
left out ingredients X and Y because we don't like them, then cooked it
a different way, and can highly recommend it." It cracks me up.

Someone hosed this paragraph -- it was poetic lines until it was ****ed up

Well, now you've screwed up the lines in my edited version. Might want to
figure out how to use Outlook Express. sometime.

****ed up quoting by two posters in a row -- hosed line breaks in the
first, and a nonstandard quote indicator (the vertical bar) in the second.
Nice work, noobs.

Well then, since I obviously don't know how to fix it, perhaps you'd be
kind enough to help rather than being so nasty?
If you can give me some advice, I'd appreciate it.

Aaaargh! That's exactly what my late mother-in-law used to do with
my recipes that she asked for. It was frustrating to hear about it.

The "lines in your edited version" were fine in Dora's post. Perhaps
there is some deficiency in your news reader?

The newer versions of Agent are a pita compared to what you're using.
I'm only one update past you. Luckily I tried 4.3 on another machine
before I put it on this one. I didn't like it at all.

I am using Agent 4.2 and have no problems with it. It is a big change
from the earlier versions, but I have upgraded all along so the
changes were incremental. I love being able to "ignore subthreads."
It is worth the upgrade.

I've tried several newsreaders (only Mac, didn't bother with any others)
and all showed limey's post formatted correctly. In this particular
case, it is - surprisingly - your Pan that seems to be hosed, not
limey's MSOE. The same applies to your reply to pavane in the thread.

Heh. I dunno who ****ed on your battery, Blinky. Not like you to have
such a sense of humor failure...

It looks like a 'glitch' in the Pan newsreader IMNSHO. I tried using it
for a little while but I didn't like it (for various reasons). However,
I still have it installed on my machine, so I went and had a look-see.
On mine, Dora's original post looks fine but the 'hosing' only happens
when I hit the reply button. To add insult to injury it also 'hoses' up
*your* version of her post (that you so painstakingly fixed) if I hit
'reply' on that too... Therefore, methinks you owe Dora and pavane an
apology.

BTW, Dora's original post looked just fine in TB too. :-P

Victor, thank you for your comments. I really am puzzled, though, and
am wondering if there's a solution. My posts when I type them look
fine. Often when I click on someone else's message the lines are
broken, or if I reply to someone's post then my post is broken as well
as theirs. It looks sloppy as heck; I really would like to know what
the problem is and how I can fix it. Perhaps someone could offer some
constructive criticism. Many thanks.

luckily, they wanted me to pay for a newer version (even though i paid
for this one), and i was too ****ing cheap. i suppose the shit will
hit the fan when i buy a new machine and have to update to the dreaded
vista. (yes, i'm aware that new-fangled macs exist, but i'm sure
someone will not be able to resist pointing that out.)

Somewhere in your newsreader you should be able to limit the line length of
whatever you type and post. I have mine set at 72. Some folks have it set
at 60. Those both usually work well. Folks that have it set for 80 and
above usually end up with broken lines.

Do you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP on CD? Buy your new machine and
reformat the hard drive, then install your old OS. I have desire to go to
Vista in the foreseeable future. AFAIC, it's crap!

Good call! Mine is set at 70. Where to find it in my newsreader is
probably a decent map. Terms may vary by news reader.

If you ever figure out how to put a working exe file on CD for the
future, let me know. I love this version of Agent. It took me the
entire 30 day trial period (and a lot of cursing) to configure 4x the
way I like, which was way too long considering that I only use the
program for news reading and responding. I whined, pleaded and
groveled in the proper ng and someone came up with a copy of 2x for
me, then I wrote Forte and got my registration code. So, I was up and
running in less than 24 hours. It's not an experience I want to
repeat.

I'm set at 72, Wayne. Incidentally, your message to me appears broken.
However, that's only when I view the messages using the small page. If
I expand the page to full-size, everything's OK, mine and yours. Maybe
that's the reason - so perhaps I'll shrink the lines until they fit onto
the small page of OE.

I see there's a fuss about your formatting, Dora. It came through just
fine for me (Mac, NewsWatcher).

Yes, in OE it's Tools > Options > Send > Mail Sending Format > Plain
Settings, then set the line length. Mine's set to 72.
Thanks, sf.

Unfortunately, when you shrink the page, many newsreaders do not wrap the
text properly. That's probably the best answer. Decrease the line lentgh
until it fits properly.

If someone else's lines are broken, it is usually their broken or
misconfigured (too long lines) newsreader; if your own lines are broken,
it is usually your newsreader's fault. However, if indeed your
article's window is too small (why?), it might be the problem. Could
you put up a few screenshots on some Web site, such as tinypics?

Just for comparison's sake, I'm using Thunderbird and it
came out fine for me, too.

Just copy the whole Agent directory to the CD. If your program or
computer fail, just copy the whole directory back and set the startup
to the correct drive or directory.

Or take the file that you were sent (agentenu200-6xx.exe) to a CD.
Then you can make a new install of the program. Look in the Agent
..ini file and copy the registration code to a text file and save it on
the same CD. Put it in a safe place where you can find it.

I think it has been agreed that it is Blinky's newsreader and not a
problem on your end. Keep going like you always have.

Thanks, Susan, I'll do that! It sounds simple enough that even a
Komputer Klutz like me could do it w/o messing it up (too much).
Fortunately, I can go into rfc chat and find people who will hold my
hand while I do it. LOL

i have millennium, which i understand is windows 95 with some extra

running on it.

but i don't do any video or photo editing, so i'm o.k. so far. i'm
hoping by the time i make a move vista will have lost some of its
crapitude.

IMHO, the "world's best newsreader" is the one you, personally, are
happy with.

I've had Vista since it came out, only because it came on a laptop. No
problems. But I certainly appreciate XP a lot more.
