I wanted to share the thank you e-mail I received from my sister whose
husband has allergic reactions to nightshades. "Thank you sooo much 4 checking with your cooking club re Dons allergy to nightshades. They had wonderful suggestions. Actually he found out himself by doing a lot of reading and comparing his symptoms with foods listed. He also found out that he is allergic to sorbitol. Anything with that in it gives him the D word. ( I hate to say diarrhea when talking about food.) Even the sorbitol in Wasabi paste will do it so I use the powdered. Your group's suggestions are wonderful. The Barefoot Contessa does a mushroom lasagna with bechamel sauce..maybe Ill try that with meat too, also the suiza and carbonara. sauces [Thanks marcella] The idea of using only fully ripened peppers is also worth trying (thanks Wayne). I'm thrilled to hear that peppercorns are not paart of the nightshade family( thank you Michael) because i have eliminated black pepper entirely. I have made the tomato sauce with beets and its really very good but BLAND. (thanks Lia)Maybe if I use pepper and experiment with herbs and spices I can find a solution. Thanks again sweetie for your help. I love you, fran" Thanks guys. I appreciate your help also. koko --- http://www.kokoscorner.typepad.com updated 2/02 "There is no love more sincere than the love of food" George Bernard Shaw |

I'm just curious: When he eats his favorite Italian foods containing tomato sauce, what other things tend to accompany the meal? Think hard. |

Thanks for the laugh Pete, that's great. I'll pass that on to her. koko --- http://www.kokoscorner.typepad.com updated 2/02 "There is no love more sincere than the love of food" George Bernard Shaw |

I should have wikied in the first place. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorbitol I'm taking sorbitol off my list of things to worry about. I never touch sugar substitutes (since I have no trouble with ordinary sugar). And I've never had trouble with the foods it occurs in naturally, the stone fruits and berries. (That is, I don't eat nothing but prunes day and night. A nice apricot tart is fine.) --Lia |
