Default Bloomin' Onions

One of my favorite things at Outback Steakhouse is their "Bloomin'
Onions." Today I was at a cook's outlet, and saw a pretty good gadget
for preparing onions for making "bloomin' onions."

I am wondering if anyone has tried such a gadget, or attempted to cook
up any bloomin' onions on their own???

What was the outcome?

I'm sure a gadget would be handy. (I haven't ever had one of those
Outback things, but I do have one of those "new" onion dicers (green &
white plastic, steel cutter, self-contained storage) and I only paid
$9 for it - doesn't work worth a damn.)

Can't you cut an onion like that without a gadget?

Anytime you want to ingest over 2000 calories in one sitting, just get
out your knife and slice away. ;-)

I have one of those little onion dicers too. . .Mine is so small it
won't hold more than a quarter of an onion at one time.

I need to order up another bloomin onion at Outback, and pay more
attention to how it is cut. Perhaps I could cut one simply by using a
knife. I'm one of those people who cries and cries when I deal with
onions. I've used all the tricks - making certain the onions are
really cold when I handle them, and I've also worn my swim goggles.
Alas, nothing works!

That's why I was fascinated by the gadget for making bloomin' onions.
I haven't purchased it yet. I was simply wondering if it would work
well.

I bought one that had a batter mix and recipe with it at BB&B for my
father-in-law and he used it and loved it.

Before I make "Bloomin'Onions", I would need the recipe for their dip. I
love that stuff.

At Sam's, I purchased a 10lb bag of yellow onions for $3.99. This
morning I peeled, sliced and froze half the bag. This is what I am
doing with my free time. Hah! Maybe I retired too early.

I've pretty much resigned myself to buying one and trying it out! I'm
thinking they ought to fry up pretty well in a Fry Daddy - or deep
fryer. So, guess I will need to buy one of those too. I had been
considering it anyway, because I love Tempura!

I've got a book with directions and a diagram for cutting. I'll scan
it and post the diagram. Probably not until tomorrow.

I'm sure Lou doesn't but the OP might... BTW, cookbooks often come with
diagrams, which you'd know if you read them.

Since from what I've observed you seem pretty clueless about cooking in
general, let's see YOU make a Bloomin' Onion without a diagram or a special
gadget (take photos in progress, please).

gadget store; - or possibly somewhere else;-)

I wonder if it would help to dip the onions in whipped egg white
before putting them into the batter??? I seem to recall something
like that - but can't recall from where.

The book I have uses an egg/milk mixture. Here's a site with the
exact diagram in Todd Wilbur's book, but the directions are someone
else's. The picture is easier to see in this link.

Here's Todd's recipe.

She would need a firemans hat for a diaphram.

Whipped egg white is sticky, but I think more to the point (making the
batter stick) would be to sprinkle them with flour first.

Well I guess that would keep large onions from rolling around - while
you slice, dice and bloom 'em. . .;-)

I don't use a gadget just a knife to do them with. It is pretty easy to do
and takes about 30 seconds to cut one up. The only gadget I use is a deep
fryer.

My favorite fried okra recipe!

* Exported from MasterCook *

Fried Okra

Recipe By :Southern Living, May 1987
Serving Size : 4 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Vegetables

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 pound okra -- 1/ 2 inch slices
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 egg whites
1 1/2 cups bread crumbs
vegetable oil for frying
salt

This comes from the Southern Living magazine cookbook, May 1987

Wash okra, drain well. Remove stems and tips. Cut into 1/2 inch
slices. Coat with flour (I just tossed all together in bowl)
Beat egg whites (at room temp) until stiff peaks form. Fold into okra.
Stir in bread crumbs, coating okra well.
Deep fry okra in hot oil (375 degrees) until golden brown. drain on
paper towels and sprinkle with salt.

Cutting the onion isn't the problem, it's getting the batter to stick to it
and stay adhered during frying. It seems to involve a very dry onion and
multiple dredging/drying/dredging/drying cycles.

One of the cooking magazines (it may have been Cooks
Illustrated)
had a how-to for the onions in a recent issue. I do recall
quite a few
steps but didn't pay much attention because deep-fried food
isn't on
my radar.
