What extra cops? What overtime? This would just be the normal PM's
entourage probably coming in from his summer residence on a Sunday morning.

IIRC there were three cars. My assumption was that the first and last
had a couple of personal protection RCMP officers each and the middle
car had the PM.

In the 1990s a friend of mine was outside 24 Sussex (PM's official
residence) with his wife and baby daughter when the PM wandered out and
stopped to shake hands and admire the baby.

Those are two most excellent words in connection with asparagus.

Very good but a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkling of
Parmesan cheese is good too!

The first of the season for me is usually roasted in a tiny bit of olive
oil and a sprinkling of salt.

After that I can decide about further embellishments.

It's darned near perfect with just butter and salt. It is also
excellent grilled. Once in a while I sauté it in olive oil wit chopped
garlic and a pinch of fried chilli flakes then served it with spaghetti
topped with freshly grated Parmesan.

To tempt you even more : After cooking the asparagus in lemon-water,
dip it in beer-dough and deep-fry it.

Are you sure you are not a Glaswegian?

I must admit that asparagus tempura is good, nearly as good as
sweet potato!

put the asparagus in a bowl ...drizzle with oil, salt fairly heavily and
toss, lay asparagus out 1 layer thick on a cookie sheet or right on the
grill rack...then grill or broil for maybe 5 minutes...excellent.

Rather sure, because
a) I have a hard time understanding the buggers
b) I don't do the Glasgow-kiss

Another nice asparagus : Boil them as above, wrap 3 sticks in thinly sliced
bacon
and shortly fry until bacon is crunchy.

I do it just like you say with asparagus and corn, with moderate salt
and a bit of pepper, then grill a salmon filet at the same time. Even
better if I can score an alder plank, soak it, oil it on one side, then
grill salmon and vegetables with less than a full load of charcoal.
With my small Weber grill, I just put the top on and let it smoke for
15-20 minutes. Wowie zowie! Goes great with a bit of lemon, a little
cole slaw on the side, and a Guinness (or three).

Apricot Ham

INGREDIENTS:

For the glaze:
1 cup apricot jam or brandy-soaked, dried apricots
1/3 cup Dijon mustard
1/2 cup orange juice (Minute Maid works fine but
fresh will give you some zest, too.)
2 Tbs. EVOO
2 tsp. Orange Zest if using dried apricots instead of jam
1 sm onion, chopped fine
4 cloves garlic, crushed
Kosher Salt and fresh-ground pepper
Optional:
1 habanero chile, seeded and chopped fine
1 Serrano chile, seeded and chopped fine

1 7-9 lb ham

METHOD:
Preheat oven as directed on ham's package; usually 18 minutes
per pound.

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan, bringing to a
simmer.

Set ham into baking dish and score the top of the ham in a
diamond pattern; ladle glaze over ham, spreading to coat
completely.

Check periodically and adjust heat to prevent burning the
glaze.

For those that like a little heat, add the chiles.

The Ranger
