Default Softening heavy buttercream cakes

I recently purchased a buttercream cake from some shady characters. They
hinted that I should take the cake out of the fridge two hours before
serving. This seemed to make a lot of sense to be because in the past I
found their frosting to be very heavy.

I was wondering if there was some shortcut, so I don't have to wait two
hours ever time I want to eat a buttercream cake. Can I put a slice in my
microwave for 5 seconds? Can I put a whole cake in for 20 seconds?

Thanks!
