But, I have to occasionally use an XP box and don't like any of the windows apps, much. I installed emacs for windows to use gnus, but have been unable to get it (gnus) working. I could use slrn, but would have to install jed, too, which is a pain on windows. Damn, I hate M$! ![]() nb |

Nope, I rarely cross - post in this group, an exception would be the recent discussion the louche "Capitalist Pig" character... I *do* cross - post in other groups, but those are generally groups I hold in low regard anyways and in those cases I'm mostly trolling. I hold this group in a higher regard and so I put the kibbosh on cross - posting unless it's for a gen - u - wine good purpose. And unlike *you*, Steve, I don't lower myself to resorting to making asinine "comebacks" to spam posts here...something which you *routinely* do. Also, unlike you I am not a cross - *dresser*, LOL... It can be instructive to look at the newsgroup with GG from time to time just to see what it would be like unfiltered. Why Google doesn't do a better job is unknown. NIN barely gets paid for their service, yet they manage to filter pretty well. > No, not the damn band. Kids...hrmmph. And get off my lawn. ![]() I know, I've run into that ambiguity. So now it's time for me to gloat :-P I started doing same at last. Almost 40% reduction in number of posts now, but seems the real threads are here. I did it after nting several days were 50 % of the posts seemed @gmail related spam. I dont need some OP telling me yet again, 'i'ts not gmail, it;s google groups'. I filter with the tools I have and few people of note were still using @gmail accounts to post. Most folks who care enough about being heard, moved off the @gmail addresses when people started blocking the whole set. |

You went on about not wanting to hear (fingers in ears, humming "la la la la la") that GG filtering is superior to gmail filtering. I did not include that because *I did not say anything about that thing that you wish to igonre*. I merely pointed out that you made two completely conflicting claims about how you were filtering. > I filter out all @gmail. If you want to play games with words on what > that is, play it with someone else. It's not a word game. gmail is simply not GG. Similarly, dogs are not cats; but I suppose you consider that statement a word game, too. What you did was make two completely conflicting claims in that post. Don't blame me for catching that; it was really obvious. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org Blinky: http://blinkynet.net |

Funny, my primary filter is to limit crossposts to 1 other group and I don't see much spam or flame war garbage at all. There does seem to be a somewhat persistent spammer in the past few days that has not been crossposting, but that is easy to skip or selectively filter until he/she/it goes away. By far that majority of flames are crossposted, and much of the spam. Spammers are lazy, so they crosspost a lot. Bill Ranck Blacksburg, Va. |
