This group is so overrun with spam nowadays that I can't even find the
real messages amongst the dross, no matter how many different kill-filters I make to try and get rid of it. I could ignore it while it was just a small flow, but there's ten times as much 'noise' as 'signal'! Agent doesn't have the ability to filter posts by domain, just by author or subject, so I give up. |

I just eliminated all future reference to world-wholesaler with a single command. It's as easy as getting and becoming familiar with a better newsreader. Or better learning your own in some cases. Unfortunately, my newsreader won't work on your system. My news provider (Supernews) does much filtering for me but crap always leaks through. Blinky should cruise along shortly with authoritative help on your system and on all systems for that matter. leo |

There are many downloadable filters available for the major readers such as OE, Thunderbird and Agent. You don't have to live with the spam, most of it can be filtered. Just finding one that filters all gmail is a huge relief. Filtering by domain other than valid ones is pointless because the spammers use fake domains with every post usually. Paul |

Otherwise, do what others here have done and just remove posts with 'From:' addresses of @gmail.com. Just some suggestions. I'm not going to beg anyone to stay if that's what you're looking for. -sw |

I wonder if Karen is making some small error in how she adds to her filter and it really isn't working correctly...? For example, today I added the word "rape" to my killfile. So if the word is in the subject line the entire post is deleted. What will tomorrow's word be? Who knows.. <sigh> |

I used to do that as well. The problem has grown so much in recent months that Karen is right, you can hardly find the 'real' posts that dwell amongst all the 'spam' posts. Deleting ' -- specific to the 'From' identifier -- nips virtually all the spam in the bud. -- Dave www.davebbq.com |

What would be the most easily configurable solution you could come up with using Windows and considering a person's willingness to change client and server and a weakness with the command line? I'm curious because I have no experience with Windows clients. Just off the top of that flat doll-eyed head of yours. leo |

And 8 months ago when I told everyone I was killfiling Google Groups many of you thought I was full of shit and to just do whatever the hell I needed to - but the general consensus was that I was being ridiculous. I told my detractors at that time that they'd see it my way in a few months. So now it's time for me to gloat :-P -sw |

I guess that's my problem... I never used to notice the spam nearly so much because my provider filtered some of it out... but the one I use now is totally unfiltered so it all comes pouring in and if I want to get rid of it I have to do it one header at a time. Needless to say, it's driving me to distraction! |

I just tried what you did and got rid of about a thousand. I've been watching the other suggestions in this thread also and most of the spam now doesn't show up with word filters in the "News Rules". Xnews, Dialog, perhaps Gravity (although I have less experience with the latter). Xnews is my primary Win news client; from my evaluations (and I have seven or eight clients installed, configured, and usable at the click of an icon) Dialog is pretty close to Xnews, and my admittedly less time with Gravity left me with a pretty good feeling that it. I would avoid the ones with weak filtering, because you have to pre-chew your feed for them; i.e., you have to use a local server or proxy between your external feed and the client, to do the filtering tha the client can't. An example is TB; while I recommend it over OE (as I would a three-legged hound with mange) its *news* filtering is almost worthless (oddly, its mail filtering is okay). If you make the move, keep this in the back of your head: news.software.readers It's the de facto support group for Xnews and it gets plenty of Dialog traffic; there are experts in both there; it's a very good group. And filtering info for your choice is probably available, of course, at the UIP. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org Blinky: http://blinkynet.net |

Not all spam comes from GG, of course, but the amount that does seem to be increasing every few seconds. ![]() Try some different feeds; perhaps you can find better filtering. They won't be filtering GG spam, so you'll still have to do that yourself; but between a well-filtered feed and local GG filtering, you'd be amazed at how little spam you'll see. I basically don't see any spam in here, for instance, except for what people reply to and quote. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org Blinky: http://blinkynet.net |

She *said* she was filtering on "the word". But depending on how she wrote the filter and if she's using regex or not, and if so what flavor of regex, she it might not catch "rapeseed". That depends on if she's specified word boundaries around the string rape or not, for instance. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org Blinky: http://blinkynet.net |
