Default What's the price of butter where you are?

It's on sale at Publix (Land O' Lakes). Twofer $4. (I don't recall the
price for a lb. of the store brand.) Good deal or not?

$2.00/pound sounds like a good buy to me.

In my neighborhood (east coast Massachusetts) butter is always
expensive. Store brand and name brands are close in price - 3.19ish to
3.69 a pound. Cabots is currently selling for 3.49 a pound at
Shaws......I am not sure if that is a sale price though.

When the store brand goes on sale for 2 for 4 I usually buy a few
pounds. I don't use a lot of butter except for baking so I like to keep
it in the freezer. Land o lakes at 2 for 4 would be a really good deal
for me.

Land o Lakes is typical at about 5 bucks a pound. I get butter at TJs for
less than 3 bucks. I think the last pound was 2.89.

I just snapped up like 9 pounds at that price, so I think it's
a good price. It's normally over $3.50 a pound. Stock up and
save, if you have the freezer space.

Mom has a big freezer in the garage which I'm slowly but surely filling up
with things she needs to have around. (Running to the grocery store for one
or two items isn't really convenient around here.) Butter was already on
the list.

Cabbage is on sale (up to 4 lbs) for a buck. I'll be grabbing a couple of
those, too. One for the corned beef, the other I'll probably make soup with
over the weekend.

We just got 2 X 500g slabs for $1.98 ea

That's about the usual price.

So that would be 2.2lb for AUD$3.96.

AUD$3.96 comes out at USD$3.72.

So, a pound would be less than USD$1.86

Come over to Oz and stock up on your butter ;-)

Busy as a one legged man in an arse kicking competition today, so dinner
was 'slack'.

Gourmet beef and cracked pepper sausages, creamy garlic potato mash,
'Dutch' carrots steamed whole, steamed broccoli (still crunchy!!), and
sautéed cabbage in butter and a hot curry powder.

Huh? Price Chopper is a fairly large regional (north east)
stupidmarket chain, they don't sell on line. Does Publix sell on
line?

LOL:
Safeway - US$5.49 / 1 lb box
Lucky's - US$5.29 / 1 lb box
PW's - US$5.19 / 1 lb box
Gene's - US$4.99 / 1 lb box
Cosentino's - US$5.19 / lb box

Challenge:
Safeway - US$3.50 / 1 lb box
Lucky's - US$4.15 / 1 lb box
PW's - US$6.45 / 1 lb box

Tillamook:
Safeway - US$4.49 / 1 lb box
Lucky's - US$3.99 / 1 lb box
PW's - US$5.39 / 1 lb box

Generic:
Safeway - Lucerne US$3.29 / 1 lb box
Lucky's - US$3.54 / 1 lb box
PW's - US$3.89 / 1 lb box
Gene's - US$4.29 / 1 lb box
Cosentino's - US$4.99 / 1 lb box
TJ's - US$2.89 / 1 lb box

I don't understand the _massive_ price differences. LOL isn't
worth the difference and Lucerne always seems to have a
plasticized taste to it. I have hit Lucky's three times since
they swapped back names from Albertson's and decided that I can
spend more wisely in other businesses.

Our specials here in southeast Iowa are usually $1.78, but it's
usually over $2 a pound. Land O'Lakes costs more than the store's own
brand.

My area of Ontario, Canada, salted butter:
Store brand $3.59
GayLea $4.99
Lactancia $5.99
Organic Meadow $8.99
Unsalted is usually more.

You must live where butter is very expensive.

Do you really think Land O Lakes ships butter across the entire
continent? All national and store brand butter comes from the same
local dairys, it's all the same butter, from the same batch, only in
different packaging. Dairys have reciprocity agreements to supply
each other's brands through various cooperatives... when you buy the
store brand it's in fact Land O Lakes or some other national brand.
When you buy the national brands you pay extra for advertizing and for
more costly packaging.

C'mon... millions of companies have web sites and they sell nothing on
line. You're not a newbie... what are you drinking/smoking? LOL
Publix has a web site too: http://specials.publix.com/

Anyway, how many people would think to buy butter on line???

Sheldon, I was laughing when I wrote the above. But there *are* a lot of
stores that sell online that you wouldn't expect to. Walgreen's drug store
comes to mind, and they even have one of those here!

$6.46 for 4lbs of salted butter, or $.02 more for unsalted at CostCo
in Austin (that's about $1.62/lb). 4 sticks to a package. Block
butter is the same price.

At that price I'd buy up and freeze heaps. $NZ 4.80/pound here.

L O L is 2 for 5 this week here. Store brands are always cheaper. I
usually pay under 2 bucks for store brand and load the freezer up.

I don't know where you are shopping, Range, but those prices are cheap. Out
in Livermore, I've seen prices as high as $6.35lb at PWs and Safeway, and
that over a yr ago. I never bought butter (the only thing I used) for more
than $3lb, on sale, and never saw it less than $2.50lb. Two dollars a pound
is a steal! I'd buy 10 lbs in a heartbeat.

In the Houston area Kroger store brand butter is usually about $2.39/lb.
Frequently on sale for less than $2.00/lb. Kroger also has the Land O'
Lakes brand on sale for 2/$4.00.

FWIW the Houston area grocery stores are highly competitive.

This is what I don't miss about California. What can possibly
justify the difference between $1.65/lb for Butter in Austin and
$6.50/lb in, of all places, Livermore CA?

What's the price of liver in Livermore? Beef liver is $1.45/lb
here. $.89/lb for chicken livers.

YOU BET! Land O'Lakes is generally over $3/lb. here. I think it was
$3.24 last time I looked, at Cub. Stick some in the freezer.
Although, Grade AA is Grade AA regardless of what it costs. :-)

That could be the price of imported, higher fat European butters. Plug
Butter for example?

High enough that I gave up eating liver years ago. I save my money for the
Chianti.

I just stopped at a regional market here and they had salted or unsalted
butter 3/$5 and no ID card etc required.

West and south of Liverspot. I'm sure there are moments when I
saw prices that high, too, but knew enough to walk away shaking
my head in shame. I do stock up on TJ butter when prices allow
since I can't tell the difference between Grade A and Grade AA
butter.

As we all have. I'll be the first to admit those are extremes, no doubt to
nail the time harried commute droids (both stores righ off the freeway), but
those prices really do exist. As always, conscientious price aware shopping
is the "anti" to grossly gouging supers.
