I guess at those prices, Denny's *is* a deal. I've been Pancake-Free for 20+ years. But I did try and make funnel cakes a few months ago. -sw |

I was looking through the junk mail that came today and saw a flyer
for Denny's "All you can eat pancakes and coffee for $4.99." Are they kidding that that's a deal? I haven' been to a Denny's in probably 20 years and can't remember the last time I had pancakes in any restaurant. Am I out of touch with prices or is $4.99 a big joke? How many freekin pancakes can a person eat? Especially the crap that they serve there! Are that many people really that stupid to go there rather than a real restaurant? Uugggg!!!! Anyway....The chicken didn't thaw enough so we're having quesadillas tonight. I've got 3 avocados for some quac. They were on sale 3 for a buck!! We got 9 and scarfed the other 6 up pretty quick. For a real meal a place like this is 100 times better. And you can eat real food for under 10 bucks. White chocolate and raspberry pancakes for $7.95. http://www.eggharborcafe.com/ Lou |

I don't go to Denny's very often.... honestly, I only went because they had some super breakfast deal that hubby loved. Anyway, their pancakes were pretty good. The Grand Slam was at least $5 the last time I noticed, so I guess considering how much people pay for buffets a $5 pancake feed isn't too bad. -- See return address to reply by email remove the smile first |

Denny's is OK, you get a decent breakfast there for not much. Plus they are always open. And 4.99 is not much. Unless it's for a charity thing, I think I could only pay about 2 or 3 dollars to justify having all- you-can-eat pancakes, for myself. Avocados, we are lucky to get them for a dollar each but I love em. |

I rarely have pancakes when I go out because they are always disappointing. I made the mistake of ordering them one day last month. An order of 3 pancakes without the bacon and eggs would have been $3.95. I ate only two of them. That was more than enough for me. |

They'll be using mixes like the one in the link below. They just add water. A 5 pound box of commercial mix is 8 bucks. I'm not going to buy a box to do a test, but I think you could get several hundred pancakes from it. The original plate of three that Denny's gives you cost's about a dime plus the labor of cooking them. And the coffee is a big markup item too, or Starbucks wouldn't be around doing so well. 30 years ago when I was poor I'd get a bag of this stuff and it lasted me a long time and I ate pancakes a lot. For a mix, it's good. But I didn't know any better. Now when I make them I don't use a mix. I don't make them often though. http://www.chefswarehouse.com/Catalo...x?prd_id=GM251 Lou |

There are places around here that have pretty good breakfast specials, usually under $5. One place still offers a 99 cent breakfast.... 2 eggs any style, home fries and toast. Coffee is extra. When I look at the prices some of the franchise joints charge for breakfast, and hotels certainly seem to take advantage of a captive audience. |

I don't do bacon and eggs in the morning. I prefer a bowl of oatmeal or Shredded Wheat with some fresh fruit. I can eat that at home for peanuts. However, I do like to go out for a coffee every day. I usually go to Tim Hortons which sells pretty good coffee. |

None of the places we went to advertised. They were all mom and pop places with good food, fast service and cheap.....and bottomless cups of coffee. They were always full of their regular customers. There was no need to advertise. They had all the business they could handle, and they didn't need to pass on the cost of advertising. |

Well seeing as this is a cooking group and seeing as how you think this is 1950 and you can get pancakes for 50 cents, maybe a compomiuse would be for you to learn to cook your own? I mean if you want something done right you have to do it yourseld. And you don't have to tip either. Paul |

Everyone knows you can make pancakes for next to nothing. Lou certainly knows it. It was merely an observation on his part that $4.99 for pancakes (all you can eat or not) is probably not a "deal". Maybe you'd better go make some peanut butter pancakes ![]() Jill |

Maybe you'd better go make some peanut butter pancakes ![]() I figure that it costs me less than $1 for the ingredients to make a batch of pancakes that will feed four people, and that is using real ingredients. My scratch pancakes are a hell of a lot better than anything I have ever had in a restaurant. Then there is the cost of the syrup. I use real maple syrup, not that grotesque sugar slop they give you in restaurants. |

I quart makes 2 batchesand it is 2.50 a quart at my market, so that is about 1.25 per batch. Butter is not exactly cheap, figure 1/2 stick for the batter and the table easily - more if you like butter. Eggs are sky high, a dozen here is like 3 bucks and I use 6 eggs per batch. Flour hasn't gotten too bad yet. I figure a batch to feed 2 hungry eaters would probably cost me about 3.50 ro 4.00 not including coffee. Now coffee prices are really escalating. So 4.99 is quite a bargain - what is commonly called a "loss leader" in the business world. They figure somebody comes in for the special and the people they are with order something other than the pancakes. Paul |

Maybe you'd better go make some peanut butter > pancakes ![]() http://www.peanutbutterlovers.com/recipes/pancakes.html Peanut Butter Pancakes 1¼ cups flour 2 tablespoons sugar 2½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1¼ cups milk 1 egg ¼ cup peanut butter 3 tablespoons butter, melted Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Beat milk with egg and peanut butter until smooth. Add to dry ingredients and beat just until well moistened. Lightly butter hot griddle. Spoon by ¼ cupfuls onto griddle. Cook until golden brown on both sides. Be sure not to use ground peanuts or it just won't be the same dish and in fact nobody could ever figure out what it was supposed to be. You sure as hell ain't getting those babies for 4.99 in Thailand, tell ya that right now. Pau |

I didn't say buttermilk pancakes, though I could add a spoonful of vinegar to whole milk for the same effect. Eggs are $2.50 per dozen here..... so less than than 30 cents. Flour is cheap, and the amount of baking powder or soda, salt and sugar is a penny or two. Add c cup of milk and a bit of oil or melted butter.... under $1 per batch. > So 4.99 is quite a bargain - what is commonly called a "loss leader" in the > business world. My experience with restaurant pancakes and their crappy syrup is that most people could not eat more than 3 regular sized pancakes. They will get you on the sides and coffee. |

If you ever have worked in a restaurant you know they all have very high overhead. If you want cheap, make it at home. Paul |
