Default Clamato juice and beer

Recently I was visiting a small town in Arizona, and when I walked
past the beer case in a grocery store I noticed quite a few six packs
of Clamato Juice positioned in front of the beer. I thought it was
strange because where I live you might find six cans on the shelt at
the most.

Then I was in a grocery store in Tucson, and I noticed that Budweiser
was selling beer that appeared to be a mixture of Clamato Juice, and
beer. Is this a drink that is just popular in Arizona, or is it a
trend that I have missed?

Thanks

Tom

You thought so? I was down to my last "beer" and that was it. So I
opened it and tried it. I couldn't even finish it. It didn't even
taste like Clamato. And if it was my last beer and I couldn't
finish it, then it's *really* bad.

Clamato has done some co-branding on some other stuff and all of it
tasted like crap, IMO. For example, they had a tortilla chip
seasoning that would have been good, but then they put it on these
god awful tortilla chips that tasted like cardboard.

The Miller michelada is much better, but still not good, IMO. It's
citrus-based instead of tomato-based.

My biggest problem with these things is I can't imagine drinking an
American mass-produced beer watered down to have less alcohol
content and taste than it already doesn't have to begin with.

If somebody were to invent a *decent* beer, mixed with spicy bloody
Mary (or bloody Caesar), then I'd certainly try that with gusto (and
an extra shot of vodka).

Although I'm no beer officianda, at least my grandfather did use Beck's
or Heineken (sp?) beer (or some other germanic imports) instead of the
typical, mass-produced beers found in the USA. And now that I think
about it, practically all of the mass-produced beers in the USA can
benefit from the addition of some V8 to make them less impalatable!

I used to drink micheladas when I lived in Houston: beer, hot sauce, lime
juice, Worcestershire, and ground black pepper, served over ice in a salted
glass. Refreshing on a hot day!

What didn't you like about the city? I lived in a couple of areas north of
the city, in a suburb SW of the city, and in an apartment near downtown. I
was impressed (and surprised) by how much diversity there was in and around
Houston. I especially loved the restaurant scene there. Baltimore has good
restaurants, but the number of restaurants and variety of cuisines available
in the Houston area really was/is amazing.

While the time may be correct, the "-0500" means you're in the
Central US time zone. You're in the Eastern time zone (-0400).

I was mostly playing--my meaning was really, "I loved the people." The
mix of people from everywhere all thrown in, instead of being
compartmentalized
as in the northeast.

Diversity? You bet. Great clubs and restaurants? Absolutely! Beauty? Not so
much. It's flat and the city is where it is because the land was essentially
a
filled-in, paved swamp. Too few large trees, too hot, too flat, and the
drivers ... I understand "wild," I have driven in NYC, but Houston drivers
seemed to be a strange combination of sucicidal, homicidal, and just plain
insane. Also, when there wasn't a drought there was a flood.

Agree with all of the above...

I lived there for 16 years, so I formed some deep roots. I made many good
friends there, whom I miss dearly. So, I, too, loved the people.

The time that OE says you posted is an hour ahead of what it actually is

I was only there for six, but really got a lot out of it. It widened my
horizons
and turned me on to flour tortillas for everything! And margaritas ...
and
University of Houston was great fun. Brutal weed-out classes in the
sciences,
nothing like the babysitting I got at UNC. There's somehing great about
an International University, like it is an "uber University."

I loved Texas in January when it got coolish and rainy. There was something
special, poignant, even, in the air. Part of it was probably pheromones,
lol! I was 22-27 in Houston.

I grew up partly in the city, partly in the county. (Cockeysville! Go
ahead,
laugh! Just don't call it "Hunt Valley!")

I miss Pollock Johnnie's Polish Sausage, backfin crab cakes, blue crabs
steamed
in Old Bay and Beer, and the "old shoe" feel of the city suburbs. I also
miss
Hausner's, which closed some years back. I have not been in my home city
for 15 years, though ... which means I must not miss it enough.

I don't know about Arizona but it's a mixed drink called a "Clam Eye". Add
a few extra ingredients and it's a "Shell Shock".

Beer and clamato or even tomato juice has been up here for a long time.
Usually just called a beer and juice for the tomato version or beer and
clamato for the clamato version...A vodka and clamato drink called a
Ceasar is also quite popular and tasty too.

Ceasars are more popular up here than Bloody Marys are down there...and
have probably as many recipes for making one. With the usual ingredients
and ratios.

Including the celery salt rimmed glasses.

Ceasar Garnishes can be celery stick, dill pickle wedge, pickled
asparagus spear or even pickled green bean. But next year I will
hopefully have lovage growing and that will serve in my Ceasars as stir
stick, straw plus garnish.

I seem to recall, from the mists of prerecorded time, when I was a barkeep,
people up in Baltimore asking for half tomato juice, half draft beer,
usually
the guys who were in the bar a little too often, as a hangover "cure."

I believe I heard that it uses to be difficult/impossible to get clamato
juice south of the border. A bit like finding osyter crackers up here.

I've always thought they sound horrible but then I don't even like
tomato juice. I tend to forget they exist, at least once this resulted
in me getting a glass of some red liquid with a celery stick in it
instead of my salad.

Well here in Louisiana, there's plenty of drunks who could care less
weather you mix horse-shit, cow urine, or oil-based paint with your
beer, just as long as it contains some form of alcohol.

I've grown to really like the Baltimore area. (Our first year here was
pretty much a blur, since we mainly spent that time taking care of newborn
twins and a 3.5 yo...) Nice people and good food to be found (although I
wish there were more farmers markets nearby). DH is a Hopkins alum and got
to know the city pretty well during his college years. We'd always flown
into Baltimore from Houston to visit family in PA and NJ over the years and
thought that this area would be the perfect place to live, should the
opportunity ever arise.

Your mention of steamed crabs reminds me that Obrycki's has just opened up
for the season....

Mary, I lived in the suburbs of Houston (The Woodlands, Conroe), and I
also miss the variety of restaurants and the availability of specialty
foods that are sold in markets.

There are no traffic jams on the freeways where I live in Louisiana, and
the restaurants are pretty good, but we do not have the variety, that we
had in Houston. I am back in Louisiana, living near my family, and that
means a lot.
